Organizing Toys in your Living Spaces

Christmas and the holiday season are SO MUCH FUN, but when you have kids, I know I am not the only mom who feels a bit overwhelmed knowing that there will be SO many toys Brought into the house.  I have been prepping for that this year, and have some tips and tricks I personally use to make your house not feel over run by toys and kids items, while not having to get rid of EVERYTHING your kids have ha.

to shop many items in this post go to my shop my home page!

Before I go to far into this post, make sure you check out these two posts on similar topics for inspiration!

Step 1 – Prepping and Purges

Okay so before I go into how I organize my kids toys, and where they all go, my first tip will be to get rid of some of the toys they already have.  I do this in 2 steps. Step 1 – Go through your kids toys AND STUFFED ANIMALS when they are not home and get rid of the toys they are either too old for, or you know they don’t play with.  You doing this alone will make the process way more successful. Once you have done that you can move onto Step 2 – which is to have your kids help.  You can do this however you want, but for us this year our ‘elf’ will be bringing each kid a trash bag with a note.  They will then go through toys, stuffed animals and books, and filling them up to donate.  For me I want my kids to learn that things are just THINGS, and not to covet them so tightly.  This process although sort of hard for kids teaches them a valuable lesson.

As for the items you pull aside I do a mixture of selling them on the Facebook marketplace, and donating them at a local donation center.  As far as the kids know all of the items they choose are only donated…and honestly so far all of them have been.  They don’t typically pick ‘sale worthy’ items.

Step 2 – ORGANIZING Toys in your Living Spaces
living room with mid century tv stand

Now that you have made some room by getting rid of old toys, its about making spaces for what you have. Below are my 10 tips on making that a bit more do able in any home.

  • Take Puzzles out of boxes and place in plastic baggies.  The boxes take up way too much room.

Organizing Toys

  • Use decorative Baskets that aren’t too big in ‘non’ kid areas for toys.  For us this is our family room.  We personally have built ins that I have small baskets delegated for specific items.

Built in's with toy organization

  • Buy furniture that allows for toy storage.  I can’t stress this enough.  Our side table in our living room opens up so stores extra blankets.  And our TV stand is more of a dresser.  I love this because I use the drawers for specific toys.  (One drawer for legos, one for cars, one for puzzles, and so on!) Doing this step alone can nearly clear all kids toys out of your living space, and I always know we are getting too many cars if the drawer is full, and I donate some!
  • Utilize Closet organizers.  A hanging cube organizer in a coat closet can allow for some space for toys on your main floor without toys taking over the closet.  I also use a door shoe organizer in the playroom closet for puzzles, games, and smaller items that can fit in the pockets.

shoe organizer for toys

  • If you’re going to store items in baskets inside of closets buy baskets similar to these, or use plastic totes with lids so they can stack.  Utilizing the full height of an area will be super helpful.
  • Only store toys with like toys.  I know this may seem silly, because maybe your bin of legos is only half full, but you don’t want your kids spreading cars and legos all over the living room or playroom when they only wanted the legos.  It will save your sanity.
  • Store toys that aren’t age appropriate anymore but you aren’t ready to get rid of in a storage area.
  • Use decorative storage when you can. I  use a decorative basket on their kids sized table with coloring books and crayons.  They are then out and ready for them, and don’t take up space in other spaces.

Hanging Lego Organization

  • This may be an unpopular opinion but if your child wants something that is just not going to fit in your home then don’t buy it! We personally do very few BIG toys.  We don’t have the space for those to be out while my kids still have space to be creative, so we just do not buy them!

Do you have any tips or tricks that you have used for organizing toys?  I hope you find these helpful and they help you not to feel like your house will burst at the seams in January!

DIY Pom Pom Stockings

If you saw my living room decorated for Christmas this year, then you probably saw my DIY stockings!! I really wanted to do some fun, yet simple stockings to fit our theme, but didn’t want to spend a ton of money because I tend to like to switch them out so often!  This DIY pom pom stockings tutorial is vague, but will hopefully give you fun inspiration for ways you an Jazz up your own stockings!

DIY Pom Pom Stockings

For me I started with these simple craft stockings as my base – partially because I was impatient and most places hadn’t put out stockings yet.  I think you could create the same effect with super cute mix and match knitted stockings.

DIY Pom Pom Stocking

Due to my stockings being plain I wanted to add a little something to make them all different.

For the first stocking I added a row of hanging ‘fringe’ – aka white yarn across the top.

2 other stockings I hot glued small pom pom’s on the stocking.  I will go over how I made the rest of the pom’s, but for these small ones I actually used my fingers – or you could use the fork method.  They didn’t have to be as big and full!

One stocking is still blank and got extra hanging decorations.

And for the last stocking I simply braided some of the white yarn I used for the fringe and pom’s and added a little row of braids to the top.

Making the Pom Pom’s

I personally already owned these little gadgets, and really think that if you’re going to be making pom pom’s ever again you should just invest in them.  All you have to do is wrap your yarn around each side of them – here is a helpful step by step.  I wanted some of the moms to have more than one color but in a color block style so just swapped out the colors of yarn to accomplish that.

Finishing Touches

I then hung them on the stockings, along with some felt balls – I just cut up old felt ball garlands for that! I also love adding our initials to our stockings so this year found these letter ornaments and loved the finishing touch they added!

Merry and Bright Living Room Decor

As I stated last week when I posted my Merry and Bright bar decor, I decided to switch things up and go with the ‘Merry and Bright’ theme throughout my home this year.  I took a slightly different take on it in some spaces, however my living room so far is definitely my favorite.  I will be sharing other spaces in the next week or so, but for today I am sharing with you my Merry and Bright Living Room Decor.

The Tree

This is not my average Christmas tree.  It has no special ornaments…and honestly very few ornaments at all.  That is because a certain 17 month old in our house LOVES BALLS.  So honestly, even though this wouldn’t be my topical tree decor, I wanted a tree we could enjoy and not to spend the next 6 weeks fighting a toddler ha! All animal ornaments are from Target last year, but they have some amazing options this year too!

Mantle and Stockings

If you have seen my blog and home before you know I have a HUGE mantle sandwiched by pretty large built-ins.  Because I don’t typically love a Lot of decor that can be hard for me to decorate, so I tend to go pretty simple with my mantle.  I love how this more modern garland looks and it was the perfect touch.

The Stockings and poms were a DIY that I will be posting yet this week.  They were so simple and fun to create, and I added a small letter ornament to each one to bring in some metal to the mantle decor and differentiate (for Santa of course!).

Built in Shelving

Alright here is where things got a bit tricky when it came to keeping things classy yet fun.  I went with an overall theme of bottle brush tree’s and the little white houses to keep things cohesive and love the end result.  Some items on these shelves are on the older side, so I will link below what is new! And if you need help with how to decorate Built in shelving be sure to check out this blog post!

Merry and Bright Kitchen Decor

Okay so for the sake of this post this is actually my bar, but I assumed most people don’t have a similar bar in their homes so this would work just as great in a kitchen!! This year I am doing a mostly Merry and Bright theme for Christmas house wide, and I will give a tour of the rest In the next week or so, but for starters wanted to show my bar incase you need inspiration for Merry and Bright kitchen decor. When you’re done with this post be sure to grab these free Merry and Bright printable’s for your decor too!

Merry and Bright Kitchen Decor

I am using bottle brush tree’s throughout the house, most are from hobby lobby and target.

My friend Navy, who does AMAZING holiday decor gave me the idea last year to hang these ornaments on the glass doors and holy cow do I love it! It is such an easy way to add to your room with extra ornaments!

My goal with this holiday decor is to keep things bright and fun but with white and metallic’s still being the main focus!

Prioritizing mom with Hubble Contacts

I swear in todays day and age things just get busier by the moment.  There is so much going on that I can barely keep up, and as a busy mom self-care and things for me are always the last to get remembered and budgeted.  That includes things like getting my contact lenses and other prescriptions refilled.  When I heard about Hubble contacts i knew it was for me and was so excited to pass along such a great company to you all. I want to share a little bit more bout these affordable contact lenses and talk about prioritizing mom and yourself by making some easy choices!

Hubble contacts

This post is sponsored by Hubble Contacts, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Why Hubble Contacts are So Great

First off, there is nothing better than getting a necessity at an affordable price.  I have been wearing contacts since middle school, so for me, being able to find a more affordable way to get them is amazing.  Prior to Hubble I would wear my 2 week contacts for a month to stretch the amount of time I had them, which obviously left my eyes feeling less than amazing towards the end!  I also can’t stress how much I love their delivery service.  For me, I need something that takes the time and thought out of getting my contacts each time, so their monthly auto delivery is AMAZING.

Finding ways to Prioritize Mom

As a mom I know that the reality is we have to put our kids first most of the time.  Then what is left gets to be spread between all the other areas that need love and attention.  The reality is, in order for us to pour into others we need to prioritize those things that make our lives better, and make us feel better.  You’re never going to feel good when your eyes are dry, or you haven’t filled a medical prescription, or some of those other must have things that we put off.  I love finding easy affordable ways to make sure that I am prioritizing my needs and feeling my best, so I can be the best mom!  If you make those needs easier they will happen MUCH MORE!

Trying Hubble Contacts

One great thing about Hubble Contacts is that you can get your first month only paying $3 in shipping!  This way you can see for yourself that they are great contacts, that offer comfort at your convenience.   If at any point you want to cancel you can call and stop your subscription easily!  If you’re interested in getting your first month of contacts, head to this link and just be sure to have your subscription handy for ordering purposes!

Are there any other things you love to streamline and make easier for the sake of prioritizing yourself?  Do you find that you’re a better mom when you make those easy choices that keep you feeling great?  I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Ice Cream Cone Cake pop How To

This year when it came to treats for school for my kids, Avé got her heart set on some cake pops she saw at a little bakery here in town.  I wasn’t thrilled about the idea of spending a million dollars on them for both kids classes (knowing that with 3-6 year olds half of them would be thrown out!).  I decided to give them a try, and had lots of people on Instagram ask for the how to, so here is the Ice cream cone cake pop how to.

And don’t forget to grab these free printable tags for them for when you take them to class!

Ice Cream Cone Cake Pop How To

Ingredients

Sugar Cones – you will need a few extra because I found that some in my box were broken and some broke in the process.

Box cake mix

Icing

Melting Chocolates in Chocolate and White

Sprinkles

Directions

First up make your cake pops – I searched around for some tips, but basically you will bake your cake, let it cool and then crumble it REALLY WELL. and then mix it with about 1/3 a cup of icing until its sort of a paste.  Roll into balls, and place in the freezer. (freezing is IMPERATIVE) – for a more detailed step by step of this part check out this blog post.

Once your cake pops are made and frozen you want to get your ice-cream cones and middle them down.  For me I used a steak knife and kind of carefully cut them down to the size I wanted.  I would say you really don’t want them much more than half the starting size!

Next take all of those little cones and you fill them with the melting chocolate.  (I used dark chocolate because the recipe is so sweet and it was amazing!) I personally found cups and containers to set them up and did them in batches, but if you’re way more ahead of the game Than me you could probably use a foam block haha!

Ice cream cone cake pop in progress

Once the chocolate is set inside the cones you are ready to assemble.  You will take more melted chocolate and put a small amount on top of the chocolate you filled the cone with.  then set the cake ball on that to act as glue.  Set them assembled pop in the fridge for that layer of chocolate to fully harden – you can’t skip that step, trust me!

Ice cream cone Cake pop in progress

While the assembled pops are hardening, melt your white chocolate.

Next take your cake pops out and dip them in the white chocolate.  Carefully let some of the extra drip off and then set them back in whatever container you were using.  For some of mine I did a double layer of the white, however that made them a little to hard for the little ones to bite into.  You then want to put those back in the fridge to harden again.

Your last step is to pour a small amount of the melted dark chocolate over the top and add sprinkles.  Then one final drying step!

Ice Cream Cone Cake Pop

Puppy Party

I know that those are wordy directions.  This is NOT  a hard thing to make, but it is time consuming.  Finding the right containers for the cones and having enough for all of them will make it faster.  Also know that you can make the cake pops a couple of days ahead so I would recommend the baking and rolling as one day then come back to the assembly so that you’re not so over them!  I would love to see your finished product when you make them.  To see more of what they were used for check out Avé’s cute puppy party where they made a fun appearance!
