Three and a half Year old Avé

With birthdays the same week, that means these half yearly updates on each of the big kids happen the same week too.  It completely blows my mind in some ways, yet feels so normal in others that Avé is already three and a half.  She tests us daily, and is wise beyond her years, but such an answered prayer for our little family!! Below are some things I want to remember about Avé at this age.

toddler girl with pigtail buns

Three and a Half Year Old Avé

  • Everything is yesterday, or last week, or last year.  No real concept of what they mean, but used ALL the time.
  • She LOVES school
  • loves to skip everywhere we go.
  • She says all the time “but that’s going to take forever”
  • Her favorite place is Target. (I know…such a mom win ha).
  • So opinionated on clothes.  We wear SHIRTS to school, and dresses are for adventures.
  • She wants to do anything Jack is doing.
  • She is so smart and independent. Always putting on her own clothes.
  • Always Elsa braids, Anna Braids, or Cinderella buns are requested for her hair.
  • The way she pinches her fingers together and says “I just wanted something crunchy” every day.
  • she loves to hide from us. and she commits big time.

little girl in plum tutu standing by photo wall

I could probably go on and on.  She is full of funny, crazy things she says.  She is up to trouble as often as she’s not, and her heart is ALWAYS in the sweetest most tender spot.  Keep being the big, sweet, wild personality you are sweet girl! YOU will DEFINITELY move mountains.

Compare Third Row Vehicles

We have been on the vehicle hunt for a while now.  A new car has been on our radar since Walker was born, but we really had to weigh our options in order to figure out what was right for us this time around. Before I tell you what we ended up with, and what our reasoning was I thought I would share this chart I made to compare third row vehicles and their specs.  This is not going to show you all vehicles, but gives you a pretty big range of vehicles with a third row, and shows many of the specs that we noticed were deal breakers or makers for us!

chart comparing vehicles with third row and their specs | Compare Third Row Vehicles

Compare Third Row Vehicles

So when we were looking at cars the biggest shock factor for me on some was the cargo size with the third row up.  We were specifically looking for something with captains chairs in the center, so knew our third row would be in use daily.  Some of the cars shocked us with having barely enough for an umbrella stroller, while some had a shocking amount of space.  The other major factor that we found to be vastly different was the leg space for the third row.  Again knowing this would be in daily use, I wanted it to not be too tight.

Ultimately we ended up with a 2018 Chevy Traverse and we are extremely happy with it.  I hope that this chart will help you when you’re weighing your options on your next car, and maybe save you a bit of time, since I swear the stakes are higher, but the time you have is less the bigger the family you’re car shopping for! Let me know if I can answer any questions.  We personally looked at or considered all the cars I listed above so am more than happy to answer any questions you may have!!

5 1/2 year old Jack

Im a little sad I’m writing this post.  Not that I am not grateful that I have been Jack’s mommy for a full five and a half years, but because I swear I just had him.  I swear!  Jack has been the constant learning lesson from God who I will be so eternally grateful for.  He’s a total mama’s boy, and a big piece of calm and quiet in my life!! I love you sweet boy.  Stop growing up.

little boy eating apple on grey couch

A few things I want to remember about 5.5 Year old Jack

  • Wiggly teeth. 2 teeth are gone and the top 2 don’t stand a chance over the next week or two.
  • How hard we are working on pronouns. You know them but talk faster than you think.
  • The way you sneak out of your room SO quietly when you’re done resting so you don’t wake up your siblings.
  • Great group hugs for Walker
  • Your love of all things super heros
  • and all things legos
  • The way you were made for the outdoors
  • Your sweet prayers, and the way you always pray for “those who are hurt and sick.”
  • Your over use of the word ‘very’.
  • What a great artist you are, and how much you love to make books.
  • How exciting your first soccer goals were for you, AND us.
  • What a free spirit you are at the beach
  • When you eat or drink something of mine you remind me that ‘sometimes its nice to share’.

As hard as it is for me to watch you get older and more independent, its such a blessing being your mama, and you’re the perfect, cautious little trail-blazer for us!! We love you sweet boy.  But try not to turn 6 too fast!

Modern Dining Room with Dark Ceiling

Finally you all. FINALLY, I have the dining room done and ready to blog!! I think this has been my favorite transformation so far in our house, and it’s going to be hard to top!  (to check out the before of it, check out this post with our 1 year update of the house, and what the dining room looked like before this update!) When I was deciding on a plan for this room I knew I didn’t want anything too bright or flashy because it is right off our front door, so I went with a modern, simple look.  The end plan was a dining room with a dark ceiling, and some huge accent photos on the wall.

For shelves over our little hutch I used Shelves from IKEA, and used piping pieces for the brackets.  This was super simple, but if anyone needs a tutorial head over to this blog for a good how to.  I painted mine gold, and love how they turned out.

I hung the shelves on the higher side so that top of the hutch cabinet would be more useful, but that also meant I lost out on one shelf, and needed taller decor. I ended up using a 2 tier fruit stand and filed it with glasses, bowls, and some decorative accents and LOVE how it turned out.  It is so functional and cute!

Thanks for checking out our dining room, and be sure to check out the home decor section of my blog for more spaces in the house! I am so glad we went with the bold look and Sam let me take the risk on a dining room with a dark ceiling.  Would you ever do the same?  Be sure to leave me a comment with any questions!

Modern Little Boys Room

I have been working on updating Jack’s room into a modern little boys room for longer than I care to admit.  I wanted to give him a space that was all his, and can’t wait to share the end result with you!

white bunk bed with green wall and black and white bedding | Modern Little Boys Room

Modern Little Boys Room

When we moved into our home 2 years ago I painted it the same as our old house to help him feel at home and adjust to the move (see before photos here).

Now that he’s getting older and more independent, we were ready to change his room and give him a space that reflected him.  I wanted to do a modern little boys room, while still making it a space FOR him.

I was able to design a room with so many aspects of his personality and items he loves present!

If you’re getting ready to move your little man to a big boy room be sure to check out my friends’ post on transitioning your toddler to a big boy bed! Bonus points – these lovely ladies, The Babbling Blondes, are STL locals!

We have since changed this room to our sweet daughters nursery, and Jack is sharing a room with his younger brother.  If you are looking for more boy room inspiration, check it out here!

Modern Little Boys Room Bed and Bedding

A bed and bedding were our first things to tackle.  Jack has wanted bunk beds for quite some time, and after some serious debates between my husband and myself we decided to cave.

green wall with white bunk beds and black and white bedding | Modern Little Boys Room

We did this inexpensive bed from IKEA because we don’t know how long this will really be what he wants, and because I loved that he could sleep on top without being too high.

I spray painted it white (FYI it takes a good amount of paint), and love how simple it turned out.

Green wall with white bunk beds and black and white beddys bedding | Modern Little Boys Room

For bedding, my biggest concern was that with bunk beds it was always going to look sloppy and his bed would never be made.

We ended up going with Beddy’s bedding for both beds, and that problem was solved.  – I did a full review of Beddys Bedding here if you are on the fence about it!

You can use code ARINSOLANGE for 20% your purchase from Beddys

If you haven’t heard of Beddy’s, do yourself a favor and check out their site.  They have the most amazing bedding that zips on both ides and fits over the mattress like a fitted sheet, so for kids making their beds it’s a breeze, and for bunk beds especially it is almost NEEDED.

Lego Storage and Playspace

One of the other reasons for updating Jack’s room was to give him lego storage and space to play with his legos away from Walker.  Having them on the main floor was creating constant stress because if they fell and Walker got them they were such a safety hazard.

bar sized kids table white dresser with decor | Modern Little Boys Room

I also know that jack is a 5-year-old boy and deserves to be able to play with his favorite toy, so we decided giving him that space in his room was the best option.

hanging lego storage | Modern Little Boys Room

We purchased bars and hanging baskets from IKEA ( here, here, and here), and placed all of his legos in them on one wall.  I then purchased a shelf from IKEA and we hung it using brackets from the hardware store.

hanging lego storage | Modern Little Boys Room

It creates the perfect bar width play space for kids, and doesn’t take up as much space in their room.  You can see how I used it similarly in the basement here and here.

This has been one of my favorite functional and design savvy things I have done through the house.  I love that his legos are so accessible to him, but easily cleaned up and out of the way for me!

Modern Little Boys Room Accessories

I don’t have many accessories in his room, because it isn’t a huge space and I didn’t want too much for extras.  I will link the items we do have In his room below for you.

Sprucing up for Spring

I talk a lot about spring cleaning around here, but one thing I also think is so important is to go through your kitchen, or your linens or whatever it might be each spring and give it an update.  When I’m sprucing up for spring I don’t do every area every year, but I try to focus on some fun, and functional updates for 1 area each year so that I can really enjoy them.  This year I decided to really focus on our kitchen and since I am a sucker for a deal I was drawn into Joss and Main, and just went down the online shopping rabbit hole! I decided to share with you all my favorite items I would be using for my Spring update in this post!

I also rounded up some links to similar items above if those weren’t really your thing, so be sure to check the links below for more gorgeous finds from Joss & Main!

My Growing Babies

This post is sponsored by Everywhere Agency on behalf of Carter’s; however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

It’s hard to believe that in a few short weeks Jack will be 5.5 and Avé 3.5.  In my eyes they still seem like they should be Walkers age, and nowhere near entering school and becoming so independent.  Although its nothing short of heartbreaking watching these sweet babies of mine grow older, watching them learn, and grow, and continue to reach new goals and milestones has been something I am learning to embrace, and love.  I recently talked about how much what my kids are wearing during these monumental moments sticks with me, when I wrote this post about Walker, but as they get older those memories with the setting and the clothing continue be such a huge part of my memory bank. I have been watching my kids, especially the older two really grow from siblings to being these best friends recently.  It has been such a blessing to watch, and know that the hard work will leave them with these life long relationships.

Dressing my Growing Babies

Jack and Avé would probably gladly share a room (so they could play, and never sleep), but its been so much fun to watch them really grow that bond, and it seems that they just know Walker will be in on it and are involving him more and more daily. I always remember the clothes my kids wear during these milestones, and Carter’s has really struck a chord with me recently understanding how much their clothing means to us moms with their With You From the Start Video, which will probably bring all moms to tears.  It really shows that when you’re shopping for spring clothes, or Pajamas, or whatever your child needs, Carter’s understands what those outfits and those memories mean to us!

They are typically busy either playing together, or at some moments even seeming to learn to give each other the space they need to grown and learn.  I love watching how independent yet reliant they are on each other.  It’s such a great trait I can see them developing that I can’t help but love!

Avé being the middle has been the one who I have seen really love that friendship the most, but also I have seen her need more time to flourish on her own, and to find her own place.  Watching her learn to shine has been a milestone ill never forget!

I don’t know that I will ever forget so many of these Carter’s outfits, and I know I won’t forget any of these amazing milestones, memories, or the way the friendships they are forming is changing our family. Watching my growing babies is so bittersweet, but I am forever grateful for getting to be apart of these moments.

Feeding Babies on the Go

Getting out and about with a baby is a lot of work.  Lots of stuff is needed, and once you get the hang of it and have it down to an art, their needs change and your whole Diaper Bag routine has to change. I think feeding babies on the go can be really tricky too because many times they are into food and want to partake in meals, but still need bottles, so its just MORE stuff.  Im going to tell you what we pack when we are going to be out over a meal with Walker.

blush fawn design bag packed with Gerber snacks | Feeding Babies On The Go

What to Pack for Feeding Babies on the Go

Food Pouches – These are the easiest option for a full meal of puree.  They take up much less space, and the options for what to buy are endless.

Food Pouch Spoons – If you’re taking food pouches they make spoons that attach right onto them that will make your life so much easier (and blow the mind of all people age 65 and up).

Snacks –  My number one tip for feeding babies on the go is to have SNACKS.  You want healthy options that will take them time to eat, and they can feed themselves so you can eat yourself.  I personally always go for Gerber snacks.  We keep a combination of Puffs, Lil Crunchies, and Yogurt Melts on hand at all times. The packaging is perfect for throwing in your diaper bag or stroller, and I feel good about the quality of snack Walker is eating.  Did you know that littles between 8-24 months get 25-30 percent of their calories from snacks, and 1/3 of 8-24 month olds are not eating whole grains on a given day. 90% of 2 and 3 year olds fall short on MyPlate recommendations for whole grains. That means that we need to be choosing wisely on what those snacks are, and offering healthy snacks like the amazing options Gerber offers. Use this coupon to get your own!

Disposable Placemat – At this age, putting food straight on the table is easiest so that your baby doesn’t throw a plate or bowl, so I love these disposable placemats for meals out.

Sippy cup – Once my kids start eating when we are out, I always bring a sippy cup of water from home for them to have with their meal. (my personal favorite with all three kids)

Bib – Always pack a big bib!! If you don’t, your baby will decide to wear all their meal for the first time! (this one is my favorite – pictured below! you can roll it up to contain any mess)

baby boy eating a plate of snacks | Feeding Babies On The Go

Baby Isles at Target | Feeding Babies On The Go

Don’t let eating out with your baby overwhelm you.  We have had amazing experiences with our kids eating out since they were newborns, and if your bag is packed with everything you need they will love it too.  What do you pack in your bag when you’re feeding babies on the go?  Anything new that I should try out, and add to my bag next time? Be sure to use this Coupon Code next time you’re shopping for your little one, and grab some Gerber Snacks.

Buying a Stroller

This post was sponsored by buybuy BABY, however all thoughts and opinions are my own.  Read more about that here

Walker is baby number 3 for us.  In the past 5.5 years baby gear has changed so much(for the better), and our needs on what we need in gear for Walker have also changed, as our family and our lifestyles have changed.  I knew we needed to upgrade our stroller situation once Walker came along, but wasn’t sure what the right option for us was with Ave´ being only 3.  I decided a trip to buybuy BABY was in store to check out what they had, and talk to someone who knew the ins and outs of buying a stroller a little better than myself.

Buying a Stroller with buybuy BABY

I can’t tell you what a great experience I had at buybuy BABY. I was instantly greeted and helped by Amanda, an amazingly knowledgable employee who was able to point me in the direction of about 5 or 6 strollers that would really fit the need I wanted filled.  I discussed our family dynamic, and with her help was really directed towards either a stroller with a ride on board for Avé, or a sit to stand option for her.

strollers on shelves at BuyBuy Baby | Buying a Stroller

We discussed when the stroller would typically be used, and I was so impressed by how knowledgable  Amanda was on everything from the basket size, wheel size, 4 wheels vs 3 wheels, an basically everything in between.  I might also add that the thing I was most impressed by was how quick she was to grab strollers off the shelves for me to see.  I didn’t feel bad AT ALL when she had to grab several down for me to see and try up close.  That was one of the best experiences in store I have had shopping.

The Big Decision

Ultimately my decision for a stroller came down to a few different criteria needing to be met:  I wanted a Ride on Board option, a large basket for our frequent travels, a seat that could focus out or in depending on the situation we are in, and something easy to fold for travel.  I ended up torn between a few different strollers but after really trying them out, I ultimately ended our quest for buying a stroller with the UPPAbaby Cruz.

UPPAbaby Cruz Review

As I said, the UPPAbaby Cruz was our end decision, and we are beyond thrilled with it.  The two features that really sold me were the cargo basket size (HUGE), and the fact that the optional ride on board could fold up when not in use!  What I didn’t know until using it for the past month and a half, was that I was also picking a stroller that could SO easily be used with one hand.  And for a mom who has 2 kids walking with me much of the time while pushing my baby, that has been a life saver.

The whole experience buying a stroller was so pleasant, and when I headed in to buybuy BABY, the stroller I ended up with was not even on my radar, so I am so grateful that Amanda really knew her stuff, and was so well trained to help me find a stroller that truly fit our family’s needs!  I am sure we will put some serious miles on that baby come spring and summer sunshine!  Make sure you head to buybuy Baby next time you’re shopping for a stroller?  What features do you look for? Let me know, incase I ever decide to add to our arsenal of ways to push my kids!
