Have you ever done a spooky basket for your kids at Halloween time? Halloween tends to be the holiday that every child absolutely loves. As much as I try to not go overboard during the holidays, I can’t help but go a bit crazy with some small gifts and candy for my kids. They will only be little for so long and I like to keep the magic of Halloween alive as long as possible. If you are looking to celebrate Halloween with some extra tricks up your sleeve, I’ll go over my favorite Halloween spooky basket ideas.

Spooky Basket: Halloween Basket For Kids
Despite my attempts, I am actually not the mom that goes big with baskets and gifts for every holiday season. I do love to teach my kids about the spirit of the holiday, rather than the material items that they may receive. But, let’s face it, Halloween is such a fun holiday for both kids and adults. No other holiday allows you to dress up as a witch or zombie and have it be socially acceptable.
In all honesty, I really just love the Halloween season. Fall is a great time of year when the weather in St. Louis begins to cool off, the leaves turn beautiful shades of colors, and pumpkin spice season is fully embraced.
Who Can Have A Spooky Basket?
I first encountered the idea of a spooky basket when I was a little girl. We lived in a neighborhood with many other families. One Halloween, there was a knock on the door, and when we opened the door, there was a Halloween basket full of candy and other fun little items. The Halloween gift box was called a “Boo Box.”
I think that boo box really stuck with me, because all these years later, I love the idea of tying in smaller items that aren’t just chocolate candy and sugar. As an allergy mom myself, I understand that Halloween can be a stressful time for some parents. If you have a child with food allergies, or sensory sensitivities, a spooky basket is a great alternative to trick or treating. I hope that this post, will help share some fun ideas for you to make Halloween just as special without all the added candy and stress. Afterall, Halloween should be magical for all children who wish to celebrate.
What Is A Spooky Basket?
You may be asking yourself “what exactly is a spooky basket?” That is a fair question and in all honesty, spooky baskets didn’t become popular until recently. The short answer is that a spooky basket is a fun way to get your family into the season of Halloween and Fall.
Because these baskets are all about Halloween and spooky season, I like to give my kids their Halloween gift basket the first week of October. This way, they can use all the items they receive and get excited to celebrate the new season.
This isn’t necessarily always the best way. I know some moms that do a Halloween candy basket for their older kids that don’t trick or treat anymore too. It really depends on what works for you and your family. For our family, we still have young children, so we stick with an earlier Halloween gift that they can use to celebrate all month long.
Spooky Basket Ideas
You don’t need to go overboard with your own spooky basket. You can go as large or small as you want and put whatever interests your child has in their basket. Kids are pretty easy to please and love to get anything from crafts, books, and candy, to smaller trinkets from the Dollar store, stuffed animals, and movies.
Halloween gift baskets can be simple or the big boo baskets you’ll see in this post. Both (or neither) are great! If you decide to go down the Boo Basket trail just put together a fun gift that will get you and your little ones in the halloween spirit.

Never feel bad if you are ‘extra’ and gifting is your love language with your kids. Never feel bad if the idea of a basket for Halloween make you cringe. Also never second guess if one year it makes sense for your family and the next it doesn’t.
