DIY Floating Shelves – An Easy Tutorial

Floating shelves are all the rage right now, and for good reason! They are functional and pretty. So it seemed like it was time to give my readers and followers an easy DIY floating shelves tutorial. I will walk you through how to make your own shelves in this post, as well as considerations you should be making.

What are floating shelves?

Before I get to the DIY tutorial lets talk floating shelves. What are they exactly? A floating shelf is exactly as it sounds. A shelf with no bracket so it appears as though its floating on the wall.

There are several different kinds of floating shelves, and they can serve many different purposes pending your space and needs. I used these solid wood floating shelves with amazing brackets in our last kitchen and they were amazing!!

DIY floating shelves

That said – to do the same style in our craft space would have been super expensive. We decided on DIY for both expense, and the ability to make them weight bearing enough for any and all storage.

Check out this video

The video below shows the shelves up close and how I styled them in our craft room.

Easy DIY Floating Shelves Tutorial

Okay okay – so now you know what they are and you are ready to build! This tutorial is fairly beginner and something most anyone can do. Some tools are required, but you can also get the majority of your lumber cut at the store if you would prefer.

Selecting Lumber

I will walk you through what we personally selected for our project in terms of lumber, but want tot give some disclaimers and suggestions to consider when making your own choices.

The number one questions you need to decide before picking lumber are: How thick do I want these to be? and Do I want them stained/natural or painted?

building shelves

The thickness of the shelves will make a difference on the board thickness you use, as well as the supports you select. And if you plan to stain or leave your shelves natural you will need to go with a solid wood not plywood like we did.

Lumber & Supplies:

We went with 2 shelves both 88 inches long, 10 inches wide, and when finished they were 4.5 inches tall.

One thing to remember when you are reading below is this will take some math. And also know that when a piece of lumber has a name that does not mean that is actually its measurement. IE – 2×4 boards are not actually 2 inches by 4 inches.

Lumber

  • Support Lumber – For us we used 2x4s, but a 2×2 would also be a great choice for a less deep shelf. You need 1 piece cut to the length of your shelf minus 2 inches. (for us that meant the supports were 86 inches long). You then need scraps for the ‘arms’ cut to the width of your shelves minus 3 inches.
  • Top and bottom boards – This is where you need to decide on your finished product. Solid wood will leave for less work with wood filler. These 2 pieces will be cut to the width x length of your shelves. (ours were 88 inches x 10 inches)
  • Front Piece – The height is something you need to do the math on baed on what you buy, and the length is the same as your top and bottom pieces. For the height it is the height of your support piece (for us that was the 2×4) + height of your bottom board + height of your top board. ( So for us – that meant 3.5 inches + .5 inches + .5 inches) giving us an end board that was 88 inches long by 4.5 inches tall.
  • Side piece (or pieces) – We only needed 1 of these because were in the corner, but if yours doesn’t go to the corner do the same on both sides. the height will be the same as your front piece (for us that was 4.5 inches) and the length will be the length of your top + added length of the front piece. (for us that was 10.5 inches). This is a good cut to do at home and measure perfectly before cutting if you can.

Tools and Supplies

Steps – Let’s Build your custom DIY Floating Shelves

  1. First things first is to get your lumber and have your larger cuts done in store. For us we had Lowes do the cuts for width so we didn’t have to mess with that when we got home.

2. Now it is time to assemble your frame. Take your long frame piece (remember for us this was a 2×4) and attach the arms well spaced on it. Simply drill through the back of the 2×4 to attach them, and remember you aren’t ever going to see this portion, so perfection isn’t key.

3. Once you have your frame built it is time to hang it. Depending your length you may need 2 people to level the frame on the wall and hang it by drilling into your studs.

support bracket for floating shelves

4. Now it is time to attach your top piece. We personally used screws to attach this, but if you are going to stain you an use a nail gun so you have less to wood filler. Use a nail gun or drill to attach the top piece to the frame.

5. Do the same thing and attach the bottom board to the frame. We attached both in front and towards the end of the frame ‘arms’.

6. Next is the front piece and sides. Using your nail gun nail the front piece in several places to attach it, then do the same on the sides.

two long white floating shelves

7. Use wood filler to fill any holes. For us because we used plywood we also had to use wood filler to make the seams more smooth. Once the wood filler is dry sand it down well and paint or stain.

I used Behr Bit of Sugar for my shelves, but you can also use any stain or just use a water based poly sealer.

And that is it. Our shelves are HEAVY duty – I have no worries about them holding up to massive amounts of weight, which was a huge part of my decision making in the choices we made.

I also really wanted something affordable, so both were accomplished. I think ours cost us roughly $100 total (however lumber prices change frequently).

Craft Room Organization

Crafts for yourself and your kids can take up a lot of space and be a huge headache. Most of us don’t have a dedicated space for those items, so I wanted to share some some craft storage and organization that will help no matter your home situation.

Week 3 – 30 Day Declutter Challenge

This craft room overhaul came as a part of my 30 day declutter challenge that I am hosting with my friend Jen. This is the second year we have held a declutter challenge, helping you get rid of the extra and organize what is left.

30 day declutter your home challenge worksheets

The goal of the challenge is to work through each space in your house thanks to a handy document, as well as track your progress and aim to donate and trash at least 30 bags of ‘extra’!

If you would like to join in grab your documents below. You can start this at any time and do it at your own pace, so don’t feel stressed to hurry through!

Decluttering Your Craft Supplies

Before you should organize any space it is really important to get rid of clutter. We almost always have it, and when it comes to craft stuff it is extra plentiful.

I know I will buy something in bulk for one project and keep the extras ‘incase’ and normally that is not needed. So when it comes to your craft space I am going to give you a few pointers on decluttering.

jars full of organization
  • Test ALL markers and pens – if they are dead throw them out.
  • Throw out crayons that are badly broken.
  • Test paints – if they are empty or dry throw them out.
  • Paint brushes – throw away bad dry ones.
  • If you have craft supplies you won’t use – donate them
  • If you have way too many of one item combine then donate the extra.
  • Start fresh on old gross play dough.

The craft spaces are slightly cut and dry – don’t keep what you don’t need or won’t use. It is a space where trash piles up so get rid of that, and you will likely be starting on your craft room organization with SO MUCH LESS.

This video shows behind the scenes and talks you through my craft room organization!

Tips on Craft Room Organization

Like I said at the start of this post – I am well aware that most of us don’t have a dedicated craft space, So I am going to walk through items to use and ways to organize your craft supplies no matter what your space for storage is.

craft bins organized

My suggestion is to have a dedicated storage cabinet, shelf in a closet, or space to keep all your craft supplies together. For me that was the closet in our guest room at our last house. It was a place I could keep everything in one space.

In our current house we have a kids office/craft space so I purchased this from IKEA and we built two floating shelves to store everything. Those two solutions with some great bins have been perfect.

glass jars organized

Store in logical ways for use

What do I mean by that? If you are storing your items in a room far from where the crafting will be done store them in containers you can carry from one space to another.

Store paints with paint brushes, and vinyl with your cutting machines – make it a one trip situation so you’re not digging in 10 bins for every project.

organized kids games and puzzles

If you do have a dedicated craft space then I suggest you have things easily accessible so you don’t have to get lots of things out to use one. For me that looks like clear bins keeping things easily accessible.

Favorite Craft Room Organization Items

Below are my favorite items for storing craft supplies for yourself and your kids. Be sure to read the descriptions to see how I use them and if they would be best in your space.

Kids Closet and Clothing Organization Tips and Tricks

Kids closet organization is easily one of the most daunting spaces a parent can tackle when it comes to keeping their home tidy and organized. I am asked about this topic frequently as a mom of 4 little ones, so decided to include all my tips and tricks in one post!

30 Day Declutter Challenge: Kids Closet and Clothes

This organization and decluttering post comes as the second in line for this years 30 day declutter challenge. My friend Jen and myself are working through a free 30 day declutter challenge where we help you rid each room and space in your home of clutter and keep them clean and organized.

Before we get going to how we are going to tackle kids closets and clothes – be sure to download your free documents below and work on every space in your home!

Decluttering Kids Clothes

Before you can organize any space, it is so important to declutter. Kids clothes are one of those never ending spaces when it comes to organizing and decluttering, but I have some tips on how to make it the most pain-free process it can be!

Tip 1: 1 Room at a Time Starting with the Oldest

First things first – Start with one room at a time, and I tend to think if you have several kids you should start with the oldest.

Go through their closet, dresser, and any clothes/shoes that don’t stay in their room (like their shoes). Make piles for each end location. In my case that is: 1 pile for donation, 1 pile for trash, 1 pile for siblings, and 1 pile for sell.

This Gorgeous space is by Isn’t that charming – check out her post for links and a how to!

Be ruthless – and keep in mind how many pairs of clothes your kids truly need. Match their socks and get rid of stays. Then make a list for anything you need to purchase. This is more of a thing for kids spaces than anywhere else because they are growing.

Tip 4: Storing for Siblings

This will look different pending your family situation. I have 4 kids, going BGBG. That means with clothes I save my older son and daughters clothing, but tend to donate more of the smaller 2’s.

For my boys their size difference is not huge. So I take all of Jack’s clothing and put them in a large bin like this on the top shelf of Walker’s closet.

For my girls – their size gaps are much bigger right now so I store Ave’s clothes in labeled bins for size in the basement. The exception to that is shoes. ALL grown out shoes go in one bin in Goldie’s closet, because feet sizing can be less predictable.

It is really important that if you are storing things in bins you put them in clean and you label the bins with sizes!

Tip 3: Make it easy to keep things organized.

What does this mean? Don’t make things impossible to pull out a single item you no longer need or fit. For me that means I keep a basket on the floor of Goldie’s closet. I add to it clothes Avé has outgrown and anything Goldie or Walker have outgrown.

I go through that basket when it is full and sell/donate/store. Jack’s clothes go right in the bin in Walker’s closet so I skip that step unless it is an item I plan to donate.

Organizing Kids Closet Spaces

Alright…if you are on this step that means you decluttered right? Every closet is different, and every room has different amounts of storage. Instead of telling you exactly how to do it, I am going to give you 5 tips and share some favorite products.

Implement and include what you need to keep your space looking and functioning well, and remember that what works for one child, in one room may not work in another.

Tip 1: Make large necessary changes when possible

What do I mean by this? A closet is a space you will use daily for the lifetime of living in your home. So if something isnt working for you make adjustments. Add bars or storage bins.

Or in our case one thing we plan to change is the sliding door in our girls closets. They block the center of their closets and accordion doors will function much better for those spaces.

I battled that the entire time we lived at our last house and it was a huge regret for me. It isn’t a huge expense so when possible it is something that I know will make a huge difference.

Tip 2: Make sure everything has a place!

This is HUGE! My girls need more storage for accessories, and my older two store toys in their closets, so having a place for those specifics is huge. Kid’s won’t keep a space clean if it isn’t easy.

Tip 3: Consider their age and height

When it comes to dressers and clothing – if you intent to have your kids dress themselves or put away items on their own make sure they are in reach for them.

I know clothes that are hung too high for my 6 year old mean that she will just tear the hanger down.

Tip 4: Utilize Hanging spaces

This is huge – if you can get things hanging they will take up a lot less space. In the round up below you will find tons of great options for getting your kids hanging spaces more well utilized.

Remember that if your kids closet is small or feeling crowded that switching to velvet hangers will save you way more space than you think. I do think you should remember that they can make getting clothes on and off hangers harder for little ones tho. (this can be good or bad!).

exposed baby closet space
This gorgeous exposed closet option by my friend Christina is simple, perfect, and functional!

Tip 5: Store in easily maintained and used ways

Kids are kids. They aren’t going to maintain perfectly folded underwear and socks. So coming up with ways to store and maintain order in their rooms is important.

A few tips:

  • Give what you can separate drawers or bins and let them simply throw things in.
  • Lay out pajama pants. Lay the folded shirt on top, then roll. It will keep the pairs together in a messy bin.
  • Bins for shoes instead of expecting them perfect lined up.
  • Pair all socks and keep only what you need.

King Canopy Bed Frame DIY Tutorial

New year, new projects!! I am SO excited to share a how Sam and I made our DIY King Canopy Bed frame this past week. The end results exceeded what I expected, and I am beyond in love with the bed!

This post contains affiliate links. We are not professionals but simply a couple that loves to DIY – Use this tutorial at your own risk. We personally used these exact steps for our bed and are loving the outcome but you are making a bed at your own risk.

DIY king canopy bed frame

King Canopy Bed Frame

So those of you who don’t know, my husband and I moved into a new home a month ago. And when I say new – I mean new to us. We purchased an 1860’s historic home and have been on a mission to bring it back to its full glory.

While much of the renovations are done, we are still hanging out with mostly empty rooms – so that means it was time to get to some projects. We had been sleeping with our mattress on the floor for almost 2 months and I was OVER it.

I really wanted a king canopy bed frame. I had a few that I had been eying and was deciding what to pull the trigger on – HOWEVER we had a couple of things holding us back.

A: Price – I have expensive taste, and was really struggling with the idea of spending the amount asked for the beds I loved. and

B: Having a 150 year old home comes with some amazing perks – but also comes with some tricky things. One of those tricky aspects is the tall skinny stairs. It makes getting furniture to the upper level very tricky.

Our big concern with a king bed was the headboard. I just didn’t know how that would ever fit up those steps. SO….What did that lead us to? A DIY.

My Inspiration King Canopy Beds

I was in love with the two beds below – both are beyond gorgeous and would be amazing in any home.

First up was the below bed (picture is from their site). It is gorgeous and ended up being our main inspiration.

Serena and Lily King Canopy Bed

Next up is this gorgeous bed (photo from their site) – I loved the mix of the natural wood and headboard. I will talk more about the choice I nearly made for our headboard based on this gorgeous bed.

Natural wood canopy bed

Lastly, This black bed (photo from their website) was a huge favorite. I went back and forth on white or black for our bed because I loved the black on this.

black metal king canopy bed

All three of these beds are in the $3000 range for a king sized bed. I can honestly say they are all probably of the highest quality and from brands that do not make anything poorly. That said – No matter the price I don’t think they would have made it up those stairs.

Lets Make a DIY King Canopy Bed Frame

One thing to note – there are a few minor things we did in photos (like used a diff board in one spot) that we would have done differently should we have done it again. We also would have added pocket holes at a different time. We learn while making these tutorials.

Clearly I ended up deciding to go with a DIY, and you guys we are beyond in love with this bed! Below I will give you the tutorial as well as a printable shopping list for your lumber to help while you’re shopping.

I am going to talk you through a couple different options for the headboard, as well as talk about lumber choices you can and should make pending your end results.

DIY King sized canopy bed

For another option for a king bed check out the tutorial by honey built home. We used portions of her tutorial for our own, however found that some aspects didn’t work for us. Her end results however were beautiful!

Some Things to Consider Before You Get Started

Okay there are two big questions you need to answer before you start shopping.

  1. Are you planning to paint this, or stain/leave natural? If you plan to leave this natural or stain make sure when you are purchasing lumber you go with a natural wood color and grain that you like, and you need to stick with ONE KIND OF WOOD ( Ie – Oak, Pine, Cedar). This is very important. If you are planning to paint that is not of importance.
  2. Do you plan to follow my exact tutorial, or do a padded fabric headboard? Both are options – and I will go through some options on that below – but if you plan to cover the headboard plywood or something inexpensive is an option.

I will list out tools below, but below is your lumber and cut list. You can simply use it on here, or you can print it out for use at the store and while cutting.

Tools and Supplies

Aside from your lumber below is a list of the supplies we used. You can pay extra at your hardware store to have your lumber cut to length so if you do not own these tools bring in your cut list for them to cut them.

Creating your DIY King Canopy Bed Frame

Below are the steps for creating your king canopy bed frame. If you have any questions be sure to leave me a comment below or DM me on Instagram and I will do my best to answer.

I also have a video where I walk you through the bed when it is finished. Hopefully seeing it up close helps answer some questions you may have.

1 – Cut all boards to length. You can wait on the 1×3 and 2×4 if you want. Those boards won’t need to be sanded, and incase your measurements are off at all on the other boards it will be helpful to make sure that length is perfect for your project.

2 – Sand everything EXCEPT 2 – 2x2s, 1x3s and the 2×4

3 – Adding your pocket holes to your 1×8 boards. You want to take your 1×8 boards and add SEVERAL pocket holes on the inside (i.e. just do it on the same surface on both ends). The reason for doing more than necessary will make sense later.

4 – Attaching your slat supports to the side rails. Take your 1×3 side rails and your 2×2 slat supports (these are the 2 2×2’s that you didn’t have to sand).

You are going to use wood glue and 2 and 1×4 inch screws to attach the 2×2 to the bottom of your 1×8. The 2×2 should run flush with the bottom edge of your 1×8. MAKE SURE THIS IS ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE BOARD AS YOUR POCKET HOLES.

side support rail
(see here – we used a 1×2 and the tutorial calls for a 2×2 – which is what we should have used)

5. Now it is time to attach the side rails (your longest 1x8s) to the foot legs (your longest 2x2s).

Decide how far off the floor you want your bed to sit. This is all preference, but we personally didn’t want our bed too low to the ground so the BOTTOM of our side rails sits 13.5 inches off the ground. (see image below for reference)

diagram of king canopy bed

Line your 1×8 up to the 2×2 and using 1 1/4 inch kreg screws attach your boards with 3 screws. You likely have 5 or 6 pocket holes – and this is on purpose. When you attach your foot board you want to drill in in spots that don’t line up so your screws don’t run into each other, so don’t over do it.

Do this on both ends so you have a huge H – then repeat and do the same thing with the other side. If you are confused with how we lined up the 2×2 and the 1×8 be sure to reference the video.

making a king sized canopy bed

6 – Attaching your foot board/headboard. Now this part is a bit tricky and honestly takes two people for balance. You are going to lay your 1×8 foot board on the floor as well as your 2×2 that is attached to your side board. Have someone else balance the large ‘H’ in the air and attach both your footboard and headboard piece.

Now you should have all but the one side attached. Again with help from someone to balance things flip things and attach the leg supports to the last 1×8 side support. When this is done you will have what you see below.

king sized canopy bed DIY

7 – Now that you have a bed that looks like it has goal posts on both ends and you need to add the canopy pieces. You need to take your 4 additional 2×2 boards and add a pocket on each end. (pick one surface and add one pocket hole to each end of each board)

Now with someone helping to balance your board on the other end, get up on a ladder and place the side of your 2×2 with the pocket hole on the top side where it will never be seen. Using 1 inch Kreg Screws attach the horizontal boards to your verticals to create the canopy.

Pocket Holes on Canopy Bed

The next steps do not have to be done before the headboard – BUT I will list them first because the headboard is not something you have to do/you could choose to do a different method.

7. Adding your slats. Cut one slat then test it it out. If it works, cut the other 9 and spread them out evenly along your bed, resting on the 2×2 supports that were added to your side rails.

Screw your slats into place with the 1 1/4 inch screws.

8. Adding the 2×4 support and legs. ** This step will require you to lay under the bed to attach. If you won’t fit, you may want to measure and add this before adding your slats on. This was just our personal method.

Add 2 pocket screw holes on each end of your 2×4. Attach the 2×4 to the headboard and footboard while laying under the bed with 1 inch kreg screws.

diy king sized bed

9. Adding extra support legs. Pick 2 places towards the middle of the bed ( not in a slat) to place your extra support legs and using a 2.5 inch screws.

At this point you have a fully functioning bed! You can stop here and paint. Or you can continue on and add our headboard or check out some of the other options for headboards.

Adding a Headboard

I went back and forth when it came to the headboard. Initially I thought I would add something padded to be more like the look of bed #2 from the start of this post.

After we got going on it, I loved the clean and simple look and decided to just stick with all wood and am so happy with the end results. I will walk you through my personal method, but also talk about an alternative you could do in nearly the exact same way.

At this point in the DIY you should have 4 1x8s left and 1 1×2.

Attaching a headboard

For us added 4 pocket screw holes along each end our 1x8s and 4 pocket holes running along the bottom of the 1×8 as well.

Starting with one board we set it on top of head support board, and carefully lined things up with the back side of the 2×2 support. Using 1 inch pocket screws attach the first board of your headboard into the support. These 4 boards will be ‘pretty’ on the opposite side of the rest of the boards you have done.

Once the board is attached on both ends, use 1 inch pocket screws to attach the bottom of that 1×8 to the top of the other 1×8. Be very careful not to come through the front of your headboard.

Repeat this with all of your 1×8 boards.

The last step is to add some wood glue to the top of your last 1×8 board and attach your 1×2. We personally lined things up in the back so there was an overhang to the front of the bed, but that is personal preference. We then used a nail gun to nail the board in, but you can use a hammer and nails if you don’t have one.

Headboard on canopy bed
Here you can see we were deciding height as we were going. We added one last 1×8 and the trim piece.

Use a dot of wood filler to fill those spots and sand before painting.

Padded headboard alternative using the same supplies.

If you prefer the look of a padded headboard. Cut your headboard boards 1.2 inch shorter. Take each board individually and wrap in two layers of batting and one layer of fabric.

Use a staple gun and attach at the back – you will then have 4 long skinny padded boards that can be attached in a layered fashion and attached to the headboard using metal ties or brackets and you will have a totally custom look.

Painting the DIY King Canopy Bed

Now you have a completed bed. If you also want to paint your bed, We personally used Behr Satin paint in Bit of Sugar. This was the same color we painted our kitchen cabinets last year and I loved it.

We used a combination of small foam rollers and a paint brush to paint, and most of the bed took 3 coats to get a great finished look. Between coats, take a sanding block if you have one to get a smoother finish.

And that is it! You now have a finished bed. Our bed personally cost us around $300 exactly – which in my opinion is a great cost for our end results.

The Perfect Valentine’s Day Outfit For Toddler Girls

If you follow my blog very closely then you know I love Amazon finds, so last year I rounded up some great toddler girl Valentine’s Day outfits all from Amazon. This year I wanted to update the post with some great new options.  I know you are going to absolutely love these finds!

Little girl in heart sweatshirt from Amazon

Because there are some small shops I really wanted to include, there are a few things not on Amazon this year. But everything is still available to be shipped and pretty darn affordable.  And there are some unique pieces that I just love and know you will too!

There are two items with sequin detailing that sparkle when the light hits just right.  You know my love for scalloped edges runs deep so I had to include some pieces with that too.  There are even fun accessories for your little girl to complete her Valentine’s Day outfit.

I think one of my most favorite finds is the heart candy headband.  It brings back so many nostalgic memories from childhood.  You cannot see conversation hearts and not think of Valentine’s Day!

DIY Yarn Christmas Tree

Avé, my 6 year old daughter, was dead set on her own pink Christmas tree this year. Easier said than done tho – I really only liked a few options, and didn’t want to have to get a bunch more ornaments for our 400th tree.

As I was thinking about what to get, a friend sent me a post on Instagram of these little yarn trees that were SO FREAKING CUTE and I wanted to make them..however that spiraled.

As I was thinking about what to get, a friend sent me a post on Instagram of these little yarn trees that were SO FREAKING CUTE and I wanted to make them..however that spiraled.

pink yarn Christmas tree

I decided to try my hand at doing it life size. I thought it would be fun to do a large pink yarn Christmas tree that she could put up year after year…and thus the brainstorming began.

A Video to Help

Before you go too far – check out this video to help you get started. I shared as much of the process as I could in this video via some short clips to try to give you behind the scenes progress.

Supplies for a Yarn Christmas Tree

Below is a list of everything you need for the Christmas tree – for the yarn I will also tell you how many of each color I personally used, but that doesn’t mean you have to do the same.

Keep in mind if you alter the order of the colors it would also alter how many you would use of each color.

pink yarn Christmas Tree
  • YARN – 6 Spools of comfy classic yarn in coral (hobby lobby), 5 spools of sweet delight in pinkaboo (hobby lobby), 5 spools of sweet divinity in blush (hobby lobby), 1 Large roll of white yarn (any jumbo roll should work), 1 roll of this pink ( I didn’t need the entire thing but I already had it on hand). Scraps of other colors for the huge pom pom.
  • WOOD DOWEL – We used scrap lumber but you need something that is sturdy enough to handle the weight. Height is up to you, but ours is 55 inches long.
  • CHRISTMAS TREE BASE
  • SCREW AND DRILL FOR ATTACHING THE DOWEL TO THE BASE
  • HOT GLUE AND GLUE GUN
  • FLORAL WIRE OR TWINE
  • POULTREY NETTING
  • STAPLE GUN
  • OPTIONAL – ZIP TIES
  • OPTIONAL – POM POM MAKER

Creating the Frame

Before we can make things pretty – we have to create the structure. The hilarious part of this part is that you are essentially creating a massive plunger lol.

Hole in the middle of Christmas Tree Base

I shared this process on Instagram as I was doing the DIY and the number of messages that I got saying they thought it was a plunger had me coining this the ‘plunger tree’ lol.

All you need for this process is your dowel or piece of wood, Christmas Tree base, and your screw, and your drill. First you want to drill a pilot hole through the bottom of the middle of the Christmas tree base.

creating the base to a DIY Christmas Tree

Then take your dowel and hold the Christmas Tree base on the top and carefully screw into the dowel. Flip it on its base and you have your frame.

Adding the Netting

Now that your frame is done – you need to add your netting. This is when things will start to look less like a plunger and more like a horribly ugly tree. Keep with me.

Cut a long portion of your poultry netting off and starting with a corner get ready to make a huge cone or party hat shape. I got things in position and while I held it my husband used several staples to hold it in place. Start wrapping to make a tree shape.

Frame and structure for DIY Christmas Tree

You will have to trim in places, and then start adding in others to create your full tree. Also keep in mind – it doesn’t have to be perfectly even on the bottom. The 400 lbs of yarn you’re about to add is very forgiving.

When I added pieces of netting in I personally used zip ties that we had on hand. If you don’t have them – don’t buy anything extra. Just use floral wire or twine – something stronger than yarn.

Your end form should resemble something like this.

Adding Yarn to the Christmas Tree

I won’t lie you guys – every time I do a yarn project I tell you guys – IT IS A PAIN. They are always very daunting projects, but they always end up being so freaking fun when they are done!

For this project You need to create 20 inch (ish) long strands of yarn. How we did this was by finding something to wrap the yarn around. We did it in groups of 15 – 20 depending how thick the yarn is.

yarn

Once you have wrapped the yarn around your object (Think a large empty picture frame or something) cut it in half. This will give you a handful of 20 inch strands.

Take 1 piece of the yarn and tie that group off in the middle (essentially giving you 30-40 10 inch long segments that are grouped). Lay that aside and repeat 4 million times.

Layer one of large Yarn Christmas Tree

Once you have a good number of ‘tassels’ it is time to start adding them to your tree. For your bottom color start tying on your tassels. Start low enough that they all hang on the floor just a little bit. You don’t need to worry about them being in a perfect line at the top – that will all be covered.

I tied roughly 2 tassels per little opening. You want it to look really full. Once you have gone the whole way around it is time to start on color number two!

DIY Yarn Christmas tree

Make a bunch of your tassels again in your next color. Once you have a good amount you want to start tying them on. Make sure you give a good 2- 3 inch overhang on the bottom color. Eventually you will have to trim them to look more even so you need room to trim!

diy yarn Christmas tree in progress

You will repeat this until you are done – the good news is that each level gets easier. When you get to the top, you can make a judgement call – for me I had just a few inches left so I decided to take the same color I had below and hot glue them around the top of the stand instead of starting a full new color that would have been really short.

What’s a Tree Without a Topper?

Now it is time for the tree topper…because what is a tree without a topper?

For me personally I chose to go with a huge pom pom. I will walk you through how I made mine, but if I were to do it again I would have gotten a larger version of my normal pom pom makers for the topper.

Large pompom on Christmas Tree

I personally ended up using a metal hoop to make my large pom pom. how I did this was starting with one color of yarn Start wrapping in one direction around the hoop. I used SEVERAL colors and even added in layers of tinsel.

DIY Huge pompom using hoop

This will get really thick, so after several layers I used my floral wire (twine would likely work even better here) and tied it off in the center. Then I kept going. You want to make this SO MUCH THICKER THAN YOU THINK.

I went into this really thinking It was going to be thick enough but I should have gone further. Once you are done, tie it tightly in the middle one last time and cut along the ends (basically cut right where it touches the hoop).

large pompom on yarn tree

Trim the pom pom to make it more full (this is where mine wasn’t a total hit), and use hot glue to add it to the top of the tree.

Cricut Joy Holiday Gift that Keeps on Giving

How many of you are looking for the best gift for the crafty person in your life? Or is that person you? The Cricut Joy is seriously the gift that keeps on giving and the perfect gift this holiday season.

This post was graciously sponsored by Cricut – thank you for supporting the brands that support my blog. Post does contain affiliate links.

Cricut Joy Holiday Gift

Useful Holiday Gifts

I am a mom of 4, so when it comes to holiday gifts – I tend to want useful and practical, but honestly…you still want something fun too. With little ones running around I don’t get a ton of time to myself, so I love finding items that can fill my cup but also help us out.

Cricut joy accessories being wrapped

I got my first Cricut about 5 years ago for Christmas and was soooo excited. I am a crafter through and through, but I also really wanted something that could help me with really useful things as a young mom.

I love a ‘perfect’ organized and labeled home, but buying things on Etsy a the time was so out of our budget, so I was excited to be able to create those things on my own.

What I have used my Cricut for

Over the years I swear I could give you 1 million examples on things I have used my Cricut for, but I will list a few below – because honestly the options are so endless.

diy gift tags

Things I have done around the House:

Fun Personal Uses:

  • I have created more shirts than I can even think of.
  • Created pillows
  • Created gift tags, cards, and so much more!
  • Labeled everything the kids need for school.
  • So many Halloween costumes

My Newest Love – The Cricut Joy

This year my love for Cricut grew when I got the Cricut Joy. I had been wanting to try the Joy, and was so excited to be given the opportunity. I have been asked so many times on my Instagram stories why I love the Cricut Joy and which machine to get if it is your first one.

That is honestly a bit of a hard question, because it does depend a bit on what you are wanting to create. The size of the Joy is both full of endless possibilities, but also does come with some holdbacks – clearly you aren’t making large squares.

Cricut Joy in front of Christmas tree

That said – I Personally find myself grabbing my Joy more often due to its convenient size that makes it so easy for me to get out in a minutes notice.

I also am OBSESSED with the Smart Vinyl and the bluetooth technology. When I want to do a small project I don’t second guess it because it is so convenient.

What Else to Get your Cricut Lover?

So maybe you already have a Cricut, or the person you are buying for does. Or maybe you’re looking for additional things to ask for so you feel totally ready to tackle any projects.

I wanted to list some other items I recommend gifting with your Cricut Joy this year!

  1. Easy Press – if you think you will be doing much in terms of fabric I highly recommend the heat press – I just got one a couple of months ago, and it is a game changer in terms of making those items seamless.
  2. The Essential tool set will give them everything they need to get started with their projects.
  3. Cricut Joy Smart Vinyl
  4. Cricut Joy Transfer Tape
  5. Cricut Joy Smart Iron on

Add all of these items with your Joy for a perfect holiday gift bundle – or this is a great way to give multiple people the option to gift you the gift of creativity at your finger tips.

IKEA Play Kitchen With Cricut Joy for Holiday Gift

I know, I know – you have probably seen 400 IKEA play kitchen hacks, but I promise you this one is worth the read! I was looking for a fun way to make this play kitchen for my kids for Christmas, and boy do I love it. I set out to make it functional on both sides, and include extra storage, and if I had to say so myself – I think it was a huge success!

This post was graciously sponsored by Cricut – all opinions are my own, and I am so thankful for you supporting the brands that support this blog. Post may contain affiliate links.

Play Kitchen Hack

When I set out to do this kitchen hack I actually went back and forth on if I wanted to use the IKEA play kitchen, or go with a used kids kitchen off Facebook marketplace.

I felt like both options had there perks. On one hand – the IKEA kitchen is super affordable, already taken apart and is budget friendly for anyone who can get it.

faux backsplash on IKEA play kitchen

On the other hand – I remember very well not living near an IKEA, so I know sometimes seeing all of these IKEA hacks can be really frustrating.

I decided to go with the IKEA play kitchen (obviously) but as with my other IKEA hacks I will give pointers on ways you can sort of implement this on other play kitchens, or things to look for in other kitchens if you want a similar look.

Getting Creative for Christmas

I LOVE getting crafty for Christmas gifts. I don’t think there is a year that goes by that I don’t DIY a gift or 10. Typically that includes using my Cricut – sometimes just to make custom tea towels or platters for teachers, but in this case to go big!

Although the IKEA play kitchen is adorable as is – I am a huge fan of updating simple items to fit my decor and home – and in this case to make them more fun and functional!

There is nothing better than pouring your heart and soul into something and seeing the joy on someones face as they open the holiday gift and continue to use it year round.

So I talked about considering other play kitchens, but I didn’t really explain why I went with the one from IKEA. There were a few reasons, but I will list them below!

Ikea play kitchen hack
  • Cost – The play kitchen is $89 brand new. Not bad in terms of cost.
  • Size – for our house we don’t have room for something huge, so I liked the size, and the functions you get for that size.
  • Overall design – one thing I was looking for was something with a pass through. My kids love to play restaurant, so I had it in my head that this would be fun no matter what side you were standing on.
  • Ease of assembly – say what you want about IKEA, but typically assembly isn’t horrible – and I have heard horror stories about other play kitchens haha!

What You Need for this Hack

Getting Started

Before we get to the actual DIY – a few things you should think about. What color do you want your play kitchen to be? Do you want every part painted?

For me I knew I wanted everything to be painted other than the backing piece and the counter top. I set those aside before I got started so they didn’t accidentally get painted.

I then decided what colors I wanted to paint everything else. I went with Gold for the faucet, hanging bar and hooks, and stove. I painted the sink white, and the rest of the kitchen pink ( My exact pink was rustic pink).

There is a video below of this DIY talking a bit more about it and showing it up close, so be sure to watch that while you are here.

Creating your custom IKEA Play Kitchen

First things first – If you are doing the cane webbing you need to remove the plexiglass that is in the 2 doors. My method for that was to take a large drill bit and drill through the plexiglass. Once there was a hole I used a pair of needle nose pliers to break chunks off until it was all removed.

Now you have all your pieces, and it is time to paint. Lightly sand any surface your going to paint, then start spray painting.

I would lay everything out and give it a good few coats (following cans recommendations for time between). When it is time to flip use those painters triangles to avoid any issues. Fully paint all sides.

assembling the IKEA Play Kitchen

Once your paint is FULLY dry it is time to add the cane webbing to your two doors. I will give short explanations for that here – but for a better video of it, head to this post where I made a large Cane cabinet

Because the crevices weren’t as deep in the play kitchen it was a bit trickier, so what I did was cut the cane BARELY larger than the opening. Once it is cut, soak your pieces of cane in water for 5 minutes. Do this one at a time – soak right before you work on each door.

Dry the cane off, then carefully start to slide the edges into the crevice that used to have the plexiglass. Once you have one corner in place as far as it will go – try your bet to get one side well aligned and in. Then CAREFULLY add super glue and let that dry.

Once that side has dried a bit, then start sliding the other sides in. My guess is that the last 2 sides will have ‘extra’. I used my Cricut knife to wedge the extras in. This will make it hold even better.

Once it is all in, carefully add super glue to all 4 sides inside that crevice and let it dry.

Now you should have all your pieces and be ready to assemble your IKEA play kitchen per the instructions. (Add everything but the handles!) Once it is assembled it is time for the fun parts.

Adding Details with Cricut Joy

Now that you have a fairly functional play kitchen – it is time to get creative and add what makes it special.

Cricut Joy

I used my Cricut Joy to cut hexagons in both black and white. I did mine on Permanent Smart Vinyl. Start by placing a white hexagon, then place them with a small gap (to imitate grout). You want to make a ‘flower’ with black in the center and white around.

The big thing to remember is to make sure you FULLY create a new flower when adding a new black one. So that will mean way more white than black. On the edges use a craft knife to cut the vinyl.

Next I added ‘Order Up’ in the font Snell Roundhand. Cut it on Smart Vinyl and use transfer tape to place it.

Adding Vinyl from Cricut Joy

I also added a hollow circle to the drain in the sink. Honestly there are so many fun things you could add with the Smart Vinyl and the Cricut Joy makes it so easy to get out and cut it with ease.

The Final Details

Now you have a NEARLY finished play kitchen – but I figured there were a few other things you could do to make the kitchen a bit more unique and fun.

Instead of adding the stock drawer pulls I used a 1 inch wooden dowel and cut it for the drawer pulls (go slightly longer than the holes on the doors). I personally used our miter saw but you could easily use a hand saw.

I also added 3 wooden knobs to the front with these craft balls.

Last – I wanted to add storage. I added 2 baskets to the sides of mine that were also painted the color of the play kitchen. In order to screw them in you will have to add a piece of scrap wood to the insides so that the screw doesn’t just stick out inside.

I used scraps from the 1×1 piece of wood we used for the handles. Simply hold it inside and screw into those pieces instead of just into the play kitchen itself.

And that is it! Seriously such a fun toy that I know my kids will enjoy for years and years to come!
