Spring is finally here in St. Louis and that has me so excited to start tackling some outdoor projects at our house. One thing that needs some major love is our sweet little front porch. I wanted to round up some front porch railing ideas for you all today incase you are in the same boat. This post will help you decide just what is right for your house!

Updating your Front Porch Railing

The front of your home is truly key for curb appeal and resale value. Most people don’t realize how easily a new railing can be added either with a handyman or DIY. It will instantly add value to your home.

Updating and adding to your outdoor space also makes your home feel more enjoyable, while instantly making you feel like you have added square footage, by giving you a new area to spend time in.

That has been a major goal for me in our update – making the front porch a space we want to spend time!

Finding the right railing isn’t always super easy, and can come with a lot of considerations, so I will talk through some things to think about before picking your porch railing in this post. I will then share some railing styles and options so you can see what’s right for you when you are ready to make that update.

Our Front Porch

Incase you are new to my blog – in the past year my husband and I have been renovating an 1860’s home in St. Louis, MO.

To say we purchased a home that needed some love would be the understatement of the century. The house from top to bottom, has needed renovation and love, and that includes the outdoor spaces.

front porch railing ideas for this porch

We are tackling the front porch and the back patio this spring so we can enjoy the spaces as the weather gets warmer here, so expect to see many more blog posts talking about ways you can update and upgrade your outdoor living space.

The hardest part in this front porch update in my opinion, is figuring out what both fits your (my) style and the style of your (my) home. With this being an 1860’s home, marrying styles is something I am learning to take into consideration on all of my choices.

Front Porch on 1860s home

The siding on our home is white, but has some scalloped detail that leans into its vintage charm on our new home – so certainly nothing modern, and honestly something you don’t see used in todays homes. (but it sure is cute!)

In contrast – I tend to decorate in a modern or mid-century modern style so I am doing my best to look at options that marry those styles and give me an end outcome that I love, but that also enhances my house. For us I know that the front porch railing won’t be the focal point, but rather a safety feature that just needs serious love.

A modern front porch railing wouldn’t fit well with the architectural style of our home. We have a vintage front door and old home, so trying to find a front porch railing that I love and fits our home has been a huge priority.

I have personally decided to decorate and handle our front porch in a sort of ‘art deco’ manner to tie in the old charm with my love of modern design, which is one possibility. I tend to think before you make a choice on one aspect of the space you need to think about the overall whole look first.

Because I know that many of you area also looking for ways to update the curb appeal of your house, in this post I will walk you through some different front porch railing ideas, and where they might best fit.

Safety and Local Building Code as a first priority

First thing when you start thinking about making any kind of porch railing update or deck railing option, is to check your local building code. This is especially important if you are doing this DIY.

Make sure you pay close attention to what the code is in your exact area, because it will vary greatly depending on the location of your home.

An important thing to remember is that front porch railings are not just there for looks, but also safety, so it is really important to know what you are doing if you decide to go with a DIY!

The best way to find out your local building codes is to reach out to your local city office. If you do hire someone to do this project they will either pull a permit (which will then ensure you have done things right) or you will need to talk with them and make sure they are doing things up to code prior to the work.

There are some areas where railings I will share in this post – such as horizontal railings, or wire railings won’t pass your building code. You may not realize that until you go to sell your house and it comes up in an inspection, so it is important to check beforehand.

Where To Get Front Porch Railings

There are MANY options when it comes to where to get or order your railings. Some people choose to find something at your local hardware store such as Home Depot, and others can go with a building supply or custom build option.

The cost will vary tremendously pending which railing option you decide to go with, the size of your porch, and how much of the railing you are choosing to replace.

For us – we are currently only looking to update the railings on our short set of stairs because the rest of our porch is finished off. Because of that the cost will be more minimal and the project is straight forward enough that a hardware store would have what I am looking for.

How to install a front porch railing:

Like I said above when talking about building codes, this can be a simple DIY project that you, and many others will take on on their own. We plan to do ours DIY, so stay tuned for that post.

You can also reach out to places like Home Depot for install options, and many deck companies would be able to provide unique options with safe, and unique options in order to get the exact look you are going for.

If you are a beginner DIYer be sure to look up railing kits that will take some of the guess work out of the project.

** One thing to note in this blog post – although I am specifically writing about front porch railings because that is our immediate need, if you are in the process of deck design, many of the railing design would also make for a great deck railing idea. Deck railing design in many situations is just a larger project than the front porch, but most would still be a great option in either situation.

Front Porch Railing Ideas

Now that we have talked a little bit about everything leading up to actually getting the railing – lets actually dive into some front porch railing ideas and the options you have. I won’t be able to touch on all of them, but we will give you a general idea of several of the best options out there.

White Craftsman Front Porch Railing

For the first of my front porch railing ideas I am going to talk about are craftsman style porch railings. In particular – for the most part a white railing. I am touching on this first because I think it is a popular choice for a lot of homes, and it is fairly timeless.

white and wood farmhouse front porch
This front porch and the railing is beyond stunning from Farmhouse on Boone – You need to check out her post for the before and afters incase you are wondering how much curb appeal a front porch railing can add!

In my opinion craftsman style railings can take on whatever your personal style is. They have a traditional look, that can be accented by many different styles of homes and decor needs.

There are several different styles within the white craftsman umbrella. The craftsman front porch has a wide open layout that maximizes limited square footage. Many times they pick a white color as a great contrast to a darker color scheme of the house.

To sum that up you are looking at a small porch where you are optimizing the open space in order to enjoy the entire front porch area.

These white craftsman style railings can be wood railings or vinyl railings. The Later will hold up to the elements and require no upkeep, verses wood that will need to be kept up with sanding and painting from time to time, so they are a good option for busy families who want to enjoy time with their family members, instead of focusing on constant porch upkeep.

Large Columns with traditional vertical white slat front porch railing

One thing you you see a lot with craftsman style front porches in new build homes is larger columns in different materials. Many times in more current homes have stone, brick, or natural wood. Coming off those columns are your white railings.

The traditional white slat railing is timeless and in my opinion meshes well with MANY different decor styles.

You can also use round columns with the white railings for an elegant look to your front porch.

Horizontal or diagonal white slats

As an alternative you can go diagnol for a ‘X’ style or horiztonal with your white slats that will have a slightly more farmhouse style look while still being classic and timeless.

These are great ways to switch things for your style while keeping a pretty classic look for resale value of your home.

Iron Railings

Iron railings are another really popular railing type that can be done so many different ways to suit your style on your front porch. Iron railings have made a major comeback in the past few years in more modern homes, however they have been around for YEARS. I remember them being on my grandparents old home, and love seeing how they are making more modern comeback.

You will see iron railings run both vertically and horizontally for a totally different feel. The Horizontal railings give tend to lead to a very modern look with little maintenance.

A Craftsman and Iron Mix

During my hunt for railings one thing I ran across that I LOVE is a white railing for the top rails and bottom rails, with iron bars running either vertically or horizontally between. It is such a soft way to add a slightly modern feel to the traditional white porch railing, and is something I am heavily leaning towards with our own home.

If you go with this route I would definitely opt for aluminum railings or something with easy upkeep as painting around the iron bars would be difficult, and that would be required more often being outside in the elements.

Cable Railings

This ties in closely with iron railings in my opinion. A modern take on iron railings is to have iron posts with horizontally running wire cables. It gives the porch railings a very minimalistic and modern overall look, while allowing you to see into the porch or deck fully.

I have seen the cable railings tied into white wood railings recently as well and it is just beautiful. It is a great way to add to a deck railing around a pool or with a beautiful view for an unobstructed view of the space below.

Glass Panel Railings

Similar to the wire railings glass panel front porch railings allow for a very modern design. You will see these paired with everything from natural wood to iron, but it will only tie in well with a modern front porch and home design in my opinion. You are looking at more of a high end cost on this style front porch.

Wood Porch Railing

Wood front porch railings come in so many varieties and styles. This is by far the most broad category because it can literally fit your home no matter what you are looking for.

You can go with an ornate wood railing for a vintage look like the one below.

Ornate front porch railing

A more modern take on the wood railing would be similar to below. Keep in mind that doing something like that will really become a focal point for your home – that is by no means a bad thing, you just don’t want too many things competing.

There is also a more full coverage front porch railing like ours that allows for full privacy, and optimal safety. Ours is original to our house, but it allows for packages to hide, and for the house to really have a fully enclosed porch.

We Love that our front porch ‘railing’ is more of a half wall that can be sat on, and truly makes our front porch feel like a small room.

Another option is to go with a more rustic wood front porch railing for a cabin feel, or a typical wood banister style railing like you often times would have on your wood deck.  This can be done from your hardware store pretty easily, and you can paint or stain it to fit your current style and change it as time goes on.

Now that you might have some front porch railing ideas, here is a round up of some of my favorite front porch decor ideas!

Wood Dowel Dresser – Create a DIY Sunburst Dresser

I have been DIYing this wood dowel dresser for MONTHS. If you follow me on Instagram you know that is no exaggeration. I finally came up with the perfect DIY sunburst dresser to make a unique spin on the wood dowel dresser trend, and I can’t wait to share it with you all.

DIY Wood Dowel Dresser

Who knew when I started a simple DIY a few months ago that wood dowel dresser DIYs would become such a trend. I have seen them all over Instagram and Pinterest, and they are all just gorgeous.

I wanted to find a way to do a unique spin on this trend, while also walking you through ways to make it your own if you want to go more of the ‘traditional’ route.

pink sunburst dresser

So what is a wood dowel dresser? Basically it is a trend where you use wood dowels in whatever size you prefer and glue them to all of part of the front of your dresser drawers to add dimension.

I actually originally got the idea from Peony and Honey’s gorgeous dresser that truly can’t be topped.

Sunburst Dresser

Now like I said I have been working on this dresser for MONTHS – but that shouldn’t scare you. It has been about 400 different styles leading to this one, and this one was actually pretty simple.

I originally was planning to do sort of a rainbow look, then did two rounds around straight up and down, and landed on a sunburst style that I hadn’t seen DIYed yet.

pink dresser with wood dowels

I have been obsessed with suns since having my youngest daughter, Goldie, so loved the idea of tying that in, because this will actually eventually likely be her dresser.

The idea is that the wood dowels in my DIY form a sunburst effect while still being simple and understated with the single color.

Picking a Dresser

No matter if you are going with a traditional design or the sunburst design your supplies and planning will be about the same. One thing to keep in mind is the dresser itself – you will want fully flat drawer fronts to make this work.

You can either use an old dresser/buy an old dresser, or do as I did and make it an IKEA hack. If you have been around for very long you know that is kind of my thing. I did an IKEA hack on Goldie’s dresser for her nursery and LOVE it, so was excited to do it again with this one.

Pink sunburst dresser DIY

If you want to see the dresser as is – head to this blog post and see it in my oldest sons room. We went with the same dresser from Ikea for both kids because I loved the size in their rooms. ( It is a gorgeous dresser as is and probably my favorite one from IKEA if left as is.)

What you need for a Wood Dowel Dresser

Below is what you need no matter what you decide to do for a dresser – Keep in mind the fully covered look will require many more dowels. There are lots of tips on getting the dowels from places like the dollar store and such for the fully covered look as well.

I went with 1/4 inch wide dowels by 36 inches long and that was long enough even for the longest pieces.

Supplies:

Gluing on the Sunburst Pattern

Getting started on this you need to have all your supplies and your dresser fully put together.

As I stated in the optional supplies we used wood filler and filled the original holes for the drawer pulls prior to starting and drilled new holes. If that is something you want to do you should do it before starting.

For the first few dowels you will also need to work on the dresser while it is standing up so the drawers are in their places.

DIY Sunburst Dresser with wood Dowels

Start with your center pieces that are going straight down. If your dresser doesn’t have any smaller drawers (mine has 2 small drawers that split the middle on the top drawer) put your first piece RIGHT in the center going all the way down.

Using your E6000 you will glue it down, but be careful not to get much extra glue on the dresser. If you are using the same dresser as I did you will need to do your first two pieces just off center barely going outward so you can open that top drawer.

Now to continue gluing. I personally didn’t measure anything – but one thing I would have done in hind sight was I would paid more attention to the spacing with the drawer pulls so that they wouldn’t go over those holes – that will make your life easier.

pink wood dowel dresser DIY

Your goal is to have the dowels as close as possible at the top grouped together, and spread out towards the bottom.

Once you have about 4 total dowels on – use painters tape to tape them in place while the glue dries.

Once your first few dowels are fully dry, remove your painters tape and lay the dresser on its back – now you can work more quickly and won’t have to tape any pieces.

When you get to the sides you will have to cut the dowels in order to glue them on. I personally used a pencil and made a mark then cut. Some of them took a few cuts to get just right.

wood dowels cut with trim scissors

At the top you will also start to notice that it looks a bit weird when they are going more horizontal so cut the top piece at an angle with the cutters (watch in the video) to give it a better look at the top. You will also end up sanding and trimming so it isn’t a huge deal!

Once you are done – let the entire dresser dry fully before moving on to cutting.

Cutting The Dowel Dresser Drawers

Once your dresser is fully dry it is time to cut the drawers apart so you can actually use it.

Using your multi tool and 2 people have one person carefully hold the dowels in place as extra security and run the multi tool between the drawers.

Once they are all separated if anything popped off just reglue them on and let those dry fully again.

cutting dowels with a multi tool

Simply cutting it that one time won’t be fully sufficient – you have 2 options on the next step. you can either run the multi tool through again on the tops and bottoms for a bigger gap between the drawers, or you can carefully sand every dowel down a bit. This allows for easier opening and closing.

We went with sanding, and I think if I were to do it again I would have possible done a second pass on each dowel with the multi tool. Don’t forget the edges as well so the drawers don’t catch on the sides.

You can also use that small sanding head on the multi tool to get any extra glue off which will not look great with the paint.

DIY Dowel Dresser Sunburst Style

Painting and Assembling

Now to paint and do the finishing touches. We personally used a paint sprayer and painted our dresser.

We went with – Behr Seaside Villa

And as a side note – if you are doing the same, getting a painting tent was a game changer for us! Just set it up and do your painting in the tent!

Add in your drawer pulls and TADA!

This was honestly not a horribly difficult project, but you expect some hiccups and hard work on sanding and cutting. Getting the 1 piece look while still having the drawers work smoothly. Expect to give it some time and love, but in the end it was VERY worth it.

Easy Boys Easter Basket Ideas

I am a mom to 4 – 2 boys and 2 girls. And if I am being honest – even though I think having boys is every bit as amazing as having girls, shopping for the ‘small’ stuff, like stocking stuffers and Easter Baskets can be harder with boys.

For my girls I tend to add accessories and things like that, but with boys that is a bit harder, so I tried to round up ideas to be played with both inside and outside.

I also added in some useful items – think things they will need for the summer but can still be fun to get. Sandals (or for us, Natives), headphones, shades, hats, and so on! Those are fun new items to get but are very useful!

What Baskets to Use

I have a full round up of baskets that are unique and will be useful past the holiday here in this post, but keep in mind an Easter basket doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy.

If I don’t go with something super unique like the post I linked above, I tend to go with a dollar store style basket, or a cheap sand bucket that can be used for a few months, then trashed when it is ruined.

I also always like to state that when it comes to Easter baskets – I link so many great items here, but they are simply inspiration. You can get it all or get one thing and your kids will be nothing but impressed and in love. Never feel pressured to get more than you feel comfortable.

Little Girls Easter Basket

Easter Baskets for Girls

I can tell from last years post that you guys love ideas for filling up your kids Easter baskets.  This week I will be putting up all my easter basket posts for the year, as well as linking back to last years that I still love.

Be sure to check out this post on unique baskets to fill up while you’re here, and grab some of  these girls Easter basket fillers for your sweet girl!

How I Fill Easter Baskets

I have talked about how much I love doing a great mixture of useful and fun when it comes to gifts for my kids.  I tend to try to get my girls items that she will be excited about, but yet also won’t just get thrown to the playroom and never seen again.

Little Girls Easter Basket Fillers

For the basket above I used this LUGGY for the basket

When it comes to blogs and social media you will see super elaborate baskets – which is WONDERFUL, but I do think it is my job to share that by no means do I buy even a big portion of what is below.

I go simple with my kids Easter baskets, and they get one or two things seen below each year then some candy and juice boxes. I do love to get them something memorable, and love adding things like the fun chalk or bubbles because I know they will play with them that day.

I only share that as a reminder because you shouldn’t feel like the bunny has to bring it all. And you should know that if he does that is great too!! So now lets get to this years filler picks.

Wall Hanging Sunshine DIY

I have been dying to do some sort of sunshine DIY in Goldie’s room now that we moved, and FINALLY came up with the perfect wall hanging sunshine DIY to put in her room. Because we just moved I haven’t fully decided my full plan on her room, so this will hold me over and keep things cute for the time being.

Wall Hanging Sunshine

Goldie Mae is our 4th and last baby, and let me tell you – SHE IS PURE SUNSHINE. I haven’t fully decided on what her room will be at this house, probably partially because her nursery before we moved will be so hard to compare to.

While I work on the room, I wanted to get something over her crib to pull things together for the time being. (4th kid means she will likely be last to have a fully decorated room too!)

large rope and grass sunshine

Her room is small and an odd shape – which has also given me some struggle and has us thinking about moving her to Ave’s room and moving Avé up to the attic. So there are many moving pieces that are Goldie’s coming room haha.

For the time being I really wanted to do something sunshine themed, and saw a small shelf size sunshine that I LOVED a while back that I really wanted in a larger version for her room. I will walk you through making this bad boy for your own home in this post.

I did my best to video a lot of this process so watch this video to get a better look behind the scenes of making this wall sunshine!

How To Make your Wall Hanging Sunshine

Now let’s walk through making this sunshine. It is not a complicated process I promise! The whole thing for me took roughly 2 days but my husband did help a lot with the glueing which cut down a ton of time.

It is also worth noting that cutting the grass skirt portion will make a HUGE mess. Easily cleaned but it looked like a a hay bail had been ripped open in our kitchen ha.

  1. First things first you need to make your base. For us that meant using a scrap piece of plywood, but any thin lumber would work great. the thinner it is the more light weight your end result will be. To create your half circle the easiest method is to tape down a piece of string in the middle of the bottom of the board. Tie your string to a pencil and carefully draw a half circle. (you can see this in the video in this post to help explain).

2. Once your half Circle is drawn use a jigsaw to carefully cut.

3. Now you can lightly sand the edge if needed, and you are ready to start assembly.

4. The next step will be covering your half circle with sisal rope. I needed just over 2 rolls of the rope to accomplish the top. Take your time and hot glue the whole thing going in a continuous circle. I started by covering the edges (3 strips on the edges before I got to the top). When you get to the end of one peice of rope just start with the next. – this process is a bit tedious I won’t lie. It goes a lot faster if you can get a second person to run the glue gun while you follow behind to lay down the rope.

covering wood with sisal rope

5. Once you have a fully covered top it is time to paint. You can do this in whatever way you want. Spray paint, hand paint, whatever suits your fancy. I used left over wall paint for ours. Let it fully dry before your next step.

half circle covered with sisal rope

6. Now for the grass skirt. Technically you only needed Rafia, but I found that grass skirts were smoother and cheaper so might as well. For my layers I cut my first row at about 3 inches long and carefully hot glued them to the back of the board going all around the curved part of the sunshine. Once that row is done take scissors and even things up.

adding grass to DIY wall hanging sunshine

After the first row add in a second row – cut them roughly 7 or 8 inches long this time so you can trim them.

And that is it. You now should have a boho wall hanging sunshine that you can put anywhere in your home.

Easter is just around the corner and I am planning all things Easter Basket. I am rounding up some useful Easter baskets in this post and will share how they can best be used.

Useful Easter Baskets

Easter Baskets are one of my favorite things from my childhood. I remember being SO excited to find what the Bunny had left me, and again as a mom it is so much fun.

I think Easter is extra fun because you get the surge of excitement but not as much stress as a mom, so that is a double win.

I don’t love using the same basket every year because I worry my kids will catch on to the true ‘bunny’, so instead of buying basket after basket I have started getting something fun they can use or that will be useful in the future.

This gorgeous Easter Basket is from @heythereheatherco on Instagram

That tends to look different every year, and with 4 kids (2 of each gender) it doesn’t mean the baskets are all the same – but I do try to stay at similar sizes.

Why I Picked These ‘Baskets’

When I was setting out to round up some ideas for you – I wanted to find some for both genders, as well as a wide variety of price ranges. I know everyone has a different budget for their baskets, and you should never feel like you have to spend a fortune on Easter Baskets if you don’t want to!

The little Jelly bags in this post are $10 and a perfect choice for your kids for pool days or just for toting things around the house. They are high on my list of options for this year.

There are also some inexpensive bags for the pool that would be darling if you do a pool/beach theme to load them up for the season, as well as normal backpacks that are always exciting for kids.

cute little matching sibling Easter Baskets
These gorgeous baskets are from @jordandunway on Instagram

I have been wanting to get my kids a backpack for travel that is different than their school backpacks so that might be my plan for this year.

I will note below which items we personally own, but in this round up it is the majority. The strollers, doll cribs, both rolling carts and so on are items we personally own and love. So I can definitely attest to them being great options.

What to Fill your Useful Easter Baskets With?

Filling your Easter baskets is just as important as the basket itself right? Whether or not you go with one of the baskets below, or something more traditional, I have some tips and posts that will help you find great items to put in your Easter baskets.

One thing that I know a lot of people do that I LOVE is aiming for a theme – if you go with all beach, or pool themed, you can easily choose a bag or simple basket that has everything in one specific theme like the basket below.

Air Fort Review – What a Mom of 4 Really Thinks

How many of you have heard of the air fort? My assumption is most of you have been considering buying one if you are here on this post. I recently got one for my 4 kids after going back and forth for a few years, so figured I would leave you guys a review if you are also on the fence!

This post may contain affiliate links – all opinions are my own

pink air fort in playroom

The Air Fort

Before I jump into my overall thoughts on the air fort, I wanted to share a bit more about the product, where you can get it, and the options, so you know exactly what I am talking about.

The air fort is literally what it says – a simple fort for kids that is held up by the air from a fan. They are available on Amazon ( and let me tell you there are some super cute variations like a barn and UFO). Here they are on Walmart as well!

The forts are made of a breathable polyester and is set up in 30 seconds as well as a 30 second breakdown. So now that you know all the normal stats let’s talk about what I think of it, and who it would be great for.

Overall cost for the fort is roughly $50.

Overall Review of the Airfort

Without wasting a ton of your time – my overall review of the Airfort was for sure a win. It is a really cool product and makes life easier for mom and dad.

setting up the AirFort

We have considering the Air for for our 4 kids for years, but honestly I assumed as with most forts that it would be a pain in the butt and or really loud because of the fan. Neither were the case.

This review is based on my thoughts as a mom of 4. My kids are 1,3,6, & 8.

Watch this Video to see how it is set up

The video on this post shows how it is set up and how it works incase you have been confused. I hope you find it helpful!

Pros to the Air Fort

The biggest pro to the Airfort is the quick set up and take down process. The fact that the fan does ALL OF THE WORK is a parents dream. I literally hooked the fan to the velcro straps and it was basically instantly set up.

I also LOVED that the kids can’t really destroy this fort. With typical forts and 4 kids my biggest thing is that someone always does something to mess it up and then the kids all freak out and I regret doing something fun (please say you relate, parents!).

Because the air is what keeps it up, even if they lift the sides and such it instantly goes back to a full fort so it is no big deal.

The size was also plenty good for all 4 of my kids to hang out and watch a movie or something fun which I thought was great. I was worried it wouldn’t be able to hold them all at once.

attaching the fan to the airfort fan

Safety – I like that there is a ‘window’ to see in, as well as a guard so the kids can’t get to the fan at all when they are inside. I wasn’t sure how that would work before getting it so was happy to see that.

The last huge pro is storage. It is so small and fits in a little pouch smaller than a gallon sized baggie so it makes it easy to bring along with you. We actually plan to bring it on spring break with us this year for something fun for the kids to do at their grandparents house.

The Cons

Admittedly this list is small because I don’t think there is much to complain about with the product, but more considerations that you should think about before purchasing to make sure it is right for you.

setting up the Airfort
  1. The fan has to be running the whole time they are in it. When the fan goes off so does the Air fort, so you will use electricity the full time it is in use.
  2. To me on that same front it is a better warm weather toy. We got it in the coldest months of the year and the last thing I wanted was a fan running in our house – so that is something to keep in mind.
  3. Last – it doesn’t come with a fan. They DO NOT market that it does, so I knew that, but it is something you should factor into the price if you don’t already own one. You can grab one for about $30 here if you don’t own one – but I would think ahead and have it on hand for arrival if you decide to purchase.

So what is my overall thought? Buy one…unless maybe you live in Alaska ha.

Black and White Wallpaper – Jack’s Room Reveal

One of the biggest reasons we moved into this new house was to get all the kids in their own rooms – so I am SO excited to finally have the first of those rooms finished and ready to share with you. I went with black and white wallpaper for Jack’s room. I wanted a big boy look that could grow with him, and the end result was exactly what I pictured, so I hope you enjoy.

This post may contain affiliate links and was graciously sponsored by Spoonflower – all options are my own, and I greatly appreciate you supporting the brands that support me!

Black and White Wallpaper from Spoonflower

To me, hands down – the focal point of Jack’s new room is the black and white plaid wallpaper. I honestly went back and forth on that choice because he is my animal lover and part of me wanted to do animals on the wall.

black and white plaid wallpaper with green animal pillow

That said – Jack is now 8.5 years old and I wanted something that would grow with him well. I have seen how much he has grown and changed in the past year, and didn’t want him to outgrow this room too fast.

I decided to go with a more subtle animal theme while doing the plaid wallpaper from spoonflower for a bold and strong choice. This is the exact choice I used in the Prepasted removable wallpaper.

Hanging the Wallpaper

Like I said above – we went with pre-pasted removable wallpaper from Spoonflower. This was my 3rd time using that specific product, so we knew it was a great choice for us, but you can read more about hanging it in this blog post.

That said – here are some things I will highlight. For Jack’s wall it took us 1 hour 10 min. BY FAR the hardest part was the window and unique window sills we had to work around.

wall of black and white wallpaper in progress

I thought maybe the slant to his wall would also be tricky, but it wasn’t. If his wall didn’t have a window it would have for sure been less than 1 hour to do this project, which is pretty great. (it is a 2 person job tho – so keep that in mind!)

Comparing Water Activated to Peel and Stick Wallpaper from Spoonflower

Spoonflower was kind enough to also send me a roll of their peel and stick wallpaper this time. It is a common question for me on which one is better, and why I pick the pre-pasted water activated version.

Honestly – my answer is normally because that is what Spoonflower recommended to me, so I wanted to be able to answer you all on the differences. I can’t fully weigh in because I didn’t do a full room, but will tell you what I noticed.

gallery wall in young boys room

The peel and stick is more textured – the feel of it is honestly amazing and so high end. The pre-pasted wallpaper is also a gorgeous texture but more of a smooth/normal wallpaper feel.

What I decided to do was apply the peel and stick wallpaper to a portion of Jack’s closet door (not my original plan, but we are in the middle of blizzard so I didn’t have much time). I did notice you can still reposition a bit which was my big worry with peel and stick.

boys room in green, black and white, and tan

That said – one thing I noticed when pulling it down was that a tiny fleck of paint came with it, just in that short time. Nothing major at all, and it didn’t seem like it would damage the walls at all, but might not be as damage free as the water activated.

I have shared this before, but with water activated you can take down a full wall with no damage in less than 5 minutes.

Decorating Jack’s Room with Black and White Wallpaper

Okay so the wallpaper may steal the show, but there are so many other gorgeous aspects to Jack’s room that I can’t wait to share. Like I said I was going for a subtle animal theme, but also had goals for keeping it clean and organized.

little boys room

Furniture

Jack’s bed is actually super old (see it here) and was red, but his favorite color is green so we decided to paint it green. His dresser is from IKEA and for once I left it alone. I loved the color with the leather pulls.

desk with pens and in animal cup and gold lamp

I also added a desk to Jack’s room. He loves to draw and play legos so this has been such a big hit for him. We had a stool that was in his room here and we painted that this gorgeous light blue. It added a fun pop of color to that portion of the room.

Bedding

Did you know that Spoonflower also does bedding? This is the second time I have incorporated their gorgeous fabrics into perfectly coordinating bedding to match the wallpaper.

Boys Room Inspo with black and white wallpaper

Since I went with the black and white wallpaper I knew I wanted to add color and pattern with the bedding. The choices ended up being perfect for his space. The duvet cover and all pillows are from Spoonflower and linked below. I went with Beligan Linen fabric for the throw pillows.

I also used Beddys Bedding in his room as well. I started using their bedding a few years ago and have never gone back because of how clean it keep the room looking. If you are interested in learning more about Beddys and deciding if that is a good choice for your room check out this blog post.

I prefer to add the layered look of a duvet with the Beddys bedding so the folded Duvet at the foot of Jack’s bed is perfect. You can see how I did the same thing here with a white quilt, and a Spoonflower Duvet.

Room Decor Details to Match Black and White Wallpaper

The rest of the details in Jack’s room were subtle and simple. Like I said before – being a little boy he always has a mess so I tried to make his room as clean and simple as I could.

For the prints I grabbed a few off Etsy, as well as using some older prints and even framed a piece of the peel and stick animal wallpaper.

young boys neutral bedroom

The large sign over his desk was a simple DIY using paint and a large canvas. The pennant added a bit of classic old school style which I LOVE.

His rug was also a very thought out choice. We went with a ruggable for something we could clean.

boys room in neutral colors with green

Creative Storage

I also used some creative ways to add storage with the details in his room. His little end table opens up so he can keep chargers and things he wants close to his bed.

The pouf also serves as some pretty substantial storage. The storage pouf unzips to store stuffed animals and blankets!

Pouf | Night stand | Window Treatments | Washable Rug | Pennant | Large natural frame | small black frame | Large Frame | Meercat print | Large banner | Map print | Book Ledges | Gold lamp | Giraffe | Fan

Together all the details in this room really pulled together to make a gorgeous, simple, clean, and organized room that I know Jack will love for years to come.

Valentines Day Party

This past weekend I had my girlfriends over for a Valentine’s Day Party, or rather a Galentine’s Day Party.  It was so much fun to celebrate our friendship and spend a morning together. I wanted to share with you guys the little details to the party and decor in this post.

While Valentine’s Day is traditionally a time for romantic love, celebrating friendship is just as important, and what better way to do so than with a fun and engaging activity like exploring a Singapore online casino together? Just as the Galentine’s Day party brought friends together to enjoy each other’s company, participating in online gaming can offer a new avenue for creating unforgettable memories with friends. Whether it’s joining in on live casino games, spinning the reels on slot machines, or strategizing over digital card tables, the convenience and excitement of an Singapore online casino can be the perfect complement to any social gathering.

Incorporating an online casino experience into a Galentine’s Day celebration could also elevate the party with a touch of glamour and the thrill of potential wins. As you consider party and decor details for your next gathering, why not set up a casino-themed corner where each guest could try their luck at virtual games? You can decorate the space with casino-inspired adornments, such as playing card centerpieces and slot machine motifs, seamlessly blending the charm of your Galentine’s Day Party with the exhilarating world of online gambling, all from the comfort and safety of your home. Just remember to emphasize the spirit of fun and embrace the shared experiences as you explore the vast array of games that online casinos in Singapore have to offer.

Valentine’s Day Party

This Valentine’s Day decor and table runner has now served as the perfect tablescape for both a Galentine day party and a family Valentines day table decor to enjoy with my husband and kids.

white room with gold chandelier and floral tablesetting - Valentine's Day Party

I tacked affordable ways to create a space I loved both times, but I will both walk you though those things in this post, as well as in the video in this post.

The decor was simple, but I will link what I can below, and please feel free to comment or email me with questions regarding what isn’t linked (likely due to it being a home goods or Dollar Section find!).

Valentines Day Table Runner

The table runner was a quick easy DIY – I used a roll of white paper we had on hand and simply painted on an XO design.  It was my favorite aspect of the party!!

I moved at a diagonal and purposefully let the brush get on the drier side for some of this. Don’t worry if you mess up – it is messy and won’t be seen!

Vases – Cheap Hack

For the second phase of this cute set up – I had a vision for vintage antique silver vases filled with flowers. That was not in the budget, so I got to thinking.

Valentines Day Table with Crumbl cookies

I grabbed some plastic vases/bowls/candy dishes from party city and the dollar store, as well as some small plastic bowls. I used hot glue to add a base to the dishes that didn’t have them, then used metallic silver spray paint to paint them silver.

Above head shot on Valentines day table

They honestly turned out PERFECT, and would be a great addition to any party or table scape and no one would know the difference.

Plates and Glasses for you Valentines Day Party

I used different plates both times I did this table scape because I was hosting in a different way. The first year I used disposable plates for the party, where the second year it was a table setting I wanted our family to enjoy for a while.

Both times everything involved was VERY inexpensive. I did use craft paint and sealer on the salad plates for the newer table setting which was a fun little change.

Silverware  |  Paper Straws  |  Champagne Glasses – no longer available but these are fun and similar  |  Carafes  | Stemmed Glasses | Bubble glasses (similar)

Decor and Details

For the details to the party each time they differed slightly, however my goal was lots of flowers. The First year I found all of my flowers at At Home, and the second time I opted for real and went with Trader Joes flowers.

fresh flowers in antique silver vases

I had a vision of a ceiling full of balloons at first then decided maybe hanging a ballon garland over my table would work. I decided to hang one from Party Hop Shop length wise with the table and it was GORGEOUS.

Valentines Day Party Menu

Instead of going all out,  I went simple on the menu.  I went with donuts, Quiche from Whole Foods, Mini parfait’s using this homemade granola recipe that I had already made, and chocolate covered Strawberries.  It was the perfect little meal to suit everyone, and took me no time to get together.

Table setting with wood table black and white table runner and floral and gold accents - Valentine's Day Party

I also served sparkling water an a mimosa bar, because what kind of brunch would it be without that?? – for the mimosa bar there was orange, grapefruit, or cranberry juice, so we all switched it up!

Valentines Day Party Decor

I kept things simple and mostly confined to the dining room, however I did use this tutorial and make a balloon strand to put up on the mantle.  I switched out a few of the prints in my frames using these prints, and I called it a day.  Sometimes I think simple is better!

Amazon Home Finds 5

It has been a WHILE since I did an Amazon home finds post. One of my favorite things over the years of blogging has been rounding up these fun, unique finds for your home on Amazon, and it was high time we did another.

Amazon Home Finds

I think we can all agree that it is becoming easier and easier to find affordable, gorgeous options for updating your home on a budget right? Places like Target and Home Goods have great options almost all of the time.

That said – especially with Target, I don’t love how popular the items tend to be, so it makes keeping your home unique slightly harder. Incorporating Amazon home finds into your decor will keep things unique, and you never have to leave your house to shop.

Buying Furniture on Amazon

We recently moved, and what prompted this post was actually my need for some items from Amazon for our new home. Several of the items in this blog post are items that we purchased and are loving at home.

I tend to decorate in a more modern, neutral way, and this post very much reflects that look. I will speak more to the items I personally own, but one thing I want to talk about is furniture before that!

tabletop accessories from Amazon

You will see several furniture items in this post, and as I have shared that on social there have been SO MANY questions – which I totally get. Buying a large furniture piece on Amazon seems a little off, but honestly it has been amazing.

We purchased the chairs, couch, and nightstands all from the round up in this post. All came on schedule (the chairs and nightstands were prime at that time and the couch gave me a 1 week window and they came the first day of the window).

Actually with the couch I ordered on the 10th of December and it arrived the 18th – so it was a quick process which made me so happy! It arrived in the worlds largest box and they carried it inside for us. I did a ton of research before buying it and have been thrilled.
