Updating Vintage Cane Dining Chairs – Week 5 ORC

We are over half way there for the One Room Challenge and I am busy doing more of the decor aspects of the room, and this week was chairs. The chairs have been my biggest up in the air item in the room, but I am so happy with where I landed. I decided on updating vintage cane dining chairs, and love the end results.

Vintage Cane Dining Chairs

I love cane webbing and really wanted to tie it into this room somehow, and my initial thought was the chairs – but I wants affordable and something not everyone has, so I landed on some vintage cane dining chairs and LOVE them.

The chairs I bought to update are mid century modern cane back and seat chairs that have the most gorgeous metal frame. I LOVE the overall look to the chairs, but also had no interest in the chrome with the room I was doing. I knew that a small update could make them the chairs of my dreams, and I was RIGHT!

One Room Challenge – Week 5

Before I get to the chair update, lets talk One Room Challenge. If you haven’t been following along – the One Room Challenge is essential a challenge for bloggers and influencers to finish a room in 8 weeks. Some are doing DIY, and some aren’t…but there are some pretty amazing spaces happening.

You can check out the other participants here, and check out my progress here, or on Instagram (@arinsolange) in my ORC highlight bubble.

Next week will be lighting, followed by 2 weeks of styling the space on the walls and the smaller aspects…and then I WILL BE DONE!

Updating Vintage Cane Dining Chairs

This was a super easy project….as long as you can find the chairs, BUT if you love the look I also found some great chairs you can buy new and give the same look to, so I will link those below.

Supplies:

Below is a list of the supplies you will need – it isn’t much!

Updated Cane Dining Chairs

Directions:

The directions for this are SO EASY. Because the paint is a chalk paint it takes a lot of the work of sanding out of things.

  1. Remove the seat back and seat from the chair.
  2. Using painters tape you need to cover ALL of the cane on the front and back, and top and bottom of the seats.
  3. Spray paint the wood portions of the seat and back, and while that is drying its time to rubnbuff.
  4. For the rub n buff – you have to do lots of thin coats. Using a paper towel rub in some of the rub n buff and let it sit. The first coat or two will look like you did NOTHING, but it will layer on. After 4 or so layers you will have perfect gold legs.

That is really it. This was a one day project for us, and the longest part of it was the painters tape. The end result was GORGEOUS and exactly what I was looking for in terms up updating something old to be more modern.

Adding Textiles – Week 4 One Room Challenge

How on earth are we HALF WAY through the one room challenge? This week was simple…yet not. I had to figure out what textiles to add to the room to warm things up a bit. Adding Textiles to our dining room was actually really tricky for me. This is a room with a heavy amount of traffic, yet an area that I want to feel a bit more formal….so let me show you where I landed.

Adding Textiles to a Room

Adding textiles to a room is ALWAYS important, but the amount that exist varies a lot based on the kind of room. In a dining room there are less textiles than most so they have to count…and have to well thought through.

In my case I needed to decide on a rug and curtains…and I took into account the look I was going for and cost as my biggest factors. I will talk through those choices in this post but fist lets talk about this challenge, and what I am doing for the One Room Challenge.

One Room Challenge

Like I said at the start of this – we are on week 4 of the one room challenge. This is essentially a challenge where a group of home decor or DIY bloggers/influencers take on 1 room in their home to make it over in 8 weeks.

There are weekly updates, and you can find the rest of the participants here. Be sure to follow my progress on Instagram (@arinsolange) in my highlight and here on my blog.

Dining Room with Long White curtains

Picking Dining Room Textiles

This dining room makeover is honestly fairly neutral. It is an open room to the rest of my main floor so I knew I needed to add warmth with the textiles while keeping with the style of the rest of the floor.

I think that tends to be the hardest part of picking window treatment and rugs in general. They are major pieces that need to accent the room but rarely should steal the show. In this room I knew I wanted the table and walls to be the statement pieces, so I had to find just the right amount of glamour with the textiles.

Dining Room Rug

I also knew with the rug it needed to be something that coordinated well with the rugs in the other rooms because of its close proximity to several other rugs in the space.

Dining Room Rug

I was in love with 2 different rugs and went back and forth on if we should do a darker rug in the dining room or the living room. Utilmately we decided that the living room got more traffic and we went with the dark rug in there, and chose the subtle blush rug for the dining room – which I LOVE.

I love adding pink to every room in our home, and the chairs just on the other side of the dining room are blush, so this ties things together beautifully without being too matchy matchy.

Dining Room Curtains

I also went back and forth with curtains, and ended up going with a slightly off white. I wanted a warmer white, and the end results are exactly what I was picturing. The room has incredibly tall ceilings and adding the long curtains made it feel that much more elegant. (Now they just need a little steaming).

I will be honest – initially I wanted velvet curtains, but our ceilings are SO tall that the options I was looking at were extremely expensive, so I landed on the normal fabric and am really happy with the end results.

What’s Next in My Room?

Alright….so half the one room challenge down, so what is left in this room?

  • Paint – this week I am hoping to give the room a fresh coat of paint.
  • Lighting – Chandelier and wall sconces need to go in.
  • Decor – Art and a mirror need to be hung. I also need to add some decorative accents on the table.
  • Table – the table needs to come back in.
  • And CHAIRS – That is the big last thing for me to figure out!

So be sure to watch for progress this week in stories and next week here on my blog!

One Room Challenge – Week 3 Update

I can’t believe we are finishing out the third week of the One Room Challenge! I wanted to share where I am at in the room, and my plans for this next week.

Week 3 One Room Challenge

Week 3 was a TRUE CHALLENGE. One reason it is so fun to do something like this with a time challenge is because it pushes you to move forward with a project even when there are busy seasons in life

October for us is jam packed with 3 birthdays, lots of Halloween prep and so much else, and it tends to make the month CRAZY over here. Because of that we had a little bit of delay on getting this room looking perfect, but these weekly updates kept me going forward!

This week was our big wainscoting week, as well as final decision making week, so I could make orders of everything we needed in the room. So that is what I will be sharing with you this week!

Dining room

What’s the One Room Challenge?

Before I get to the updates for the week – I wanted to share what the challenge was one more time as well as show you have to follow my progress.

This blog post shares much more about what the challenge is, and you can find the other participants here.

I obviously set out to update our dining room for this 8 week challenge, and you can track the progress on Instagram in my ‘ORC’ highlight, as well as on my blog here.

Wainscoting progress

Wainscoting the Walls

This is not your tutorial…maybe this week that will happen. Maybe it won’t ha. But none the less IT DID HAPPEN. And it is SO GOOD. I have been back and forth on ‘how much’ to do in this dining room. It is open to the rest of the house, but still definitely framed out to be it’s own room as well.

When a room is open, you have to be more careful not to over do it in terms of being bold..because no one wants to look at 400 things as once. I also think it was a room that was dying for a bit of romance and elegance, but know that too formal isn’t our style….so we will tone that down with the details.

We went with a fairly traditional chair rail with wainscoting in this space because we already have some chair rail through the main floor that is original so I wanted to play off of that.

The trim is UP. But now it needs to be caulked and painted…so this next week this room should look a whole lot cleaner.

Final Room Choices

Now that the wainscoting is up, 90% of the purchases and decisions have been made for the room so the next few weeks will be more assembly than major DIY’s.

Below you can see the final choices I made, and shop them if you are interested. One thing I went back and forth on in the bringing stages was whether or not to add a bench in the bay window. I decided NOT to. That isn’t to say I will never do that down the road in this space, but for now I loved the idea of the long drapes.

The other decision I went back and forth on was the ceiling. I actually ordered tin ceiling tiles thinking that was going to be my plan, but as of today I decided not to.

I know I am going to get some flack on that. Because honestly…lots of you have been around since this dining room, and loved the bold! I TOO LOVE BOLD this old home…it has so much fighting for attention that is so deserving.

If we didn’t have big bold stairs I would likely not worry about the ceiling too much, but I think allowing the wainscoting be the only bold architectural element is the right choice.

Final Mood Board

Below is the final mood board for the dining room. I am 100% on everything aside from the chairs – those are a maybe.

Halloween Party that Will Wow Your Guests

A couple of weeks ago my friends from The Party Hop Shop and I set out to create a gorgeous Halloween party tablescape that would give fun inspiration to anyone who was looking to host a Halloween Party this year. The end outcome was stunning, and I can’t wait to share all the details with you!

Halloween Party Tablescape

Halloween Party to Wow Your Guests

After a year off from Halloween and parties we are all a bit ready to make up for lost time, am I right? There is nothing better than throwing a party that feels elegant enough to leave the decor up for an extended time before the party.

When it came to this Halloween party set up (because I always feel it is worth noting – in many situations like this we are doing a mock up of a party to help give you inspiration), we were looking for a way to show an elevated, adult feel with a Halloween Party.

I think many times Halloween parties can feel kid centered or very horror movie-ish. That was in no way the feeling we were going for, but rather wanted to give the over all feeling of Halloween while still exuding elegance.

The Makings of A Great Tablescape

I have been meaning to do a blog post on this, but life has been hectic, and I don’t know if it will happen until after the holidays. In the mean time – I want to give you a little run down of how I create tables capes and where I spend my money and how.

I tend to share a tablescape set up every holiday, and it is normally jam packed with stuff…but it is not something I spend a lot of money on. By no means do I want to pour tons of money into a tablescape that in many instances is just being used to give inspiration.

birds eye view of Halloween party Table

Similarly – when you are hosting a dinner party the last thing you want to do is pour tons of money into the decor when you will likely be spending a lot on food. Before I get into my actual tablescape from this party, below is a good list of things to keep on hand to be able to throw together quick dinner party tables!

What to Keep On Hand

Creating our Halloween Party

I am going to walk you through each part of the Halloween Party so you can recreate it for your own home.

The Ceiling

You’ll need:

First things first – you will want to execute the ceiling before the table is set. For our ceiling we went with hanging witch hats, and candles and I LOVED the end outcome for. To elevate the look of the hats we decided to add some fresh flowers and greenery to tie into the table.

hanging witch hats for halloween Party

Before you hang the hats – add the flowers with hot glue to portions of some of the hats. Be careful not to add too much weight to them, so if you want a lot of added floral I would lean towards more greenery than flowers.

You will then use fishing wire and either choose to tie it around the tip of the hat or string it through the top of the hat using a needle. Honestly we went with tying it around the top, and it worked great, but you can string it through too.

You will want to hang the hats using gaffers tape or small command hooks, and make them hang at varying heights with the candles. We chose to hang all the hats first, then all the candles.

Balloon garland for Halloween over Bar Cart

Once all your hats are hung you will need to add magnets to the hats to level them if you added flowers and greenery. Your easiest method of doing this is to take two magnets – one on the top and one on the bottom of the brim of the hat. For some hats we needed 2 or 3 sets of magnets, and for others we needed 0 tor 1.

Once all your hats and candles are up it is time to tackle your tabletop.

Halloween bar Cart

Halloween Party Tablescape

Now onto the fun stuff. The biggest thing I want to stress when it comes to a tablescape is that you shouldn’t get caught up in my details. Find items around your home, and aim for the overall vibe, not the exact look! Below is what I used!

Bar Cart for halloween Party
Hanging witch hats with flowers

Steps for the Table

The first thing will be your table cloth and runners. For our runners we decided to go sort of ‘messy’ with them which I loved. I had the pink run the whole length, then the black netting run more towards the center.

Once those are down, add your bird cage off center because it is your largest item, and slowly work your way out. I added flowers after the birdcage, then I filled in around them.

You want to add different heights and different colors and textures together. This will take some playing with things to get the right look, so be okay with swapping spots and places.

Halloween party Table

Last – once your table runner is fully done, it is time to set the table. I went really simple with white plates, black salad plates, white napkins, and gold silverware.

For the ‘napkin rings’ I used floral wire and glued gold dollar store skeletons to glue to the floral wire to appear to be just sitting there. It was a fun pop on the place settings.

The Bar Cart

The last area we tackled was the bar cart and GORGEOUS balloon garland. This area was so simple yet packed so much impact!

Halloween Bar Cart

What you need:

Halloween Charcuterie Cups

We used some of the extra florals and floral wire to add some flowers to the bar cart which I think was really impactful! Aside from that it was just adding everything to the bar cart. We used books to add height and just organized things in the best way we could!

That is it! This seems more complicated than it is, but honestly was so pretty that leaving it up all October would have been amazing!

Modern Dining Table DIY – Week 2 ORC

We are already on week 2 of the One Room Challenge, and I am taking on our dining room. I knew one of the things I for sure wanted to do in this space was update our dining table with a more modern dining table – so I wanted to share this super easy DIY that can be done with basically no tools!

One Room Challenge – Week 2

Incase you missed last weeks post, you can check out this post for my inspiration on our dining room update that I have planned for the One Room Challenge.

Essentially in this challenge participants will take on one room in their home over the course of 8 weeks and give it a full face lift. Some will be big some small, but it is a great way to cheer others on.

Our dining room was a blank slate and I have been wanting to give it the love it deserves, so for this challenge that is exactly what is happening.

DIY Modern Dining Table

We are trucking along with the biggest DIY in the room today, which was a new dining room table. After we built my friend Val a table this summer, I knew I wanted to update our own table. Her design was GORGEOUS, but the legs were A LOT of work, and that was daunting for many of you in terms of a DIY.

Because of that I wanted to see if I could come up with a DIY dining table that would require very little in terms of tools, and be ‘easy’ for anyone to recreate.

I love modern design, and to mix that into our very old and vintage home, so I knew that having a modern table in the space, with more vintage bones would end up being the perfect look for us. This blog post will walk you through how to make this dining table, and you will have to follow along on Instagram and my blog to see how the room comes together around it.

building the base to a modern dining table

Building a DIY Table

Like I said before – this is not my first table DIY – I did a DIY dining table this summer, and also built a DIY outdoor table a few years ago that has gone bananas on Pinterest.

Building a DIY table doesnt have to be hard, but there are things to keep in mind when you are doing one, no matter what design you go with.

  1. You want to stick to one kind of wood. Different Wood will take stain differently, so sticking with one kind of wood will give you a better end result.
  2. Getting straight lumber that is in good shape is important. Take each board out and inspect them before you buy them. The extra few minutes at the store will make you thankful!
  3. Factor tools into the cost and design you go with. For instance – this DIY Modern dining table costs a little more in supplies than others, but there are very few tools needed, so if you don’t have many tools, you won’t need to add that to your cost.
Modern Dining Room

Supplies for Modern Dining Table DIY

Below is what you need in terms of supplies. For us we tend to find the best lumber close to us at Menards, but Lowes, Home Depot, or other local places are great too!

This is also based on an 8 foot long, 4 foot wide table. The width is much wider than average, but we like having a wide dining table. You can adjust the lumber choices if you don’t want those measurements.

  • [6] – 16x1x8 foot pine boards
  • [26] 24 inch wood Rounds
  • [24] 18 inch wood rounds
  • Wood glue – lots of it
  • Kreg Jig and Scews – you could skip this step if you don’t own one.
  • Sander – electric would be good
  • Wood filler
  • Stain of choice – I went with
  • Wood Conditioner
  • Polyurethane – water based
  • Screws for connecting wood rounds – we used 2 inch
  • Screws for connecting the base to the table top – 1.5 inch
  • Drill
  • Larger Clamps – we used these large ones but you could do smaller clamps at the seems
  • Small Clamps
DIY Modern Dining Table

Supplies for Matching Bench

If you want to do a bench with the table top the following supplies are needed. I am not listing things like tools and screws because you should have those for creating the table. This is simply ADDITIONAL items.

  • 12 inch wood rounds
  • Jigsaw
  • [2] 1x16x 8 foot pine boards

How to Make your DIY Modern Dining Table

Alright now to how to make this! This is easily a one weekend project and takes very few tools.

Assembling the Tabletop

Your first step is to Sandwich all of wood pieces into stacks of 2. Take each of your 1×16 boards and using wood glue and clamps stack them together. Essentially you are creating 4 2×16 boards.

Once those are dry, put pocket holes into the bottom of 2 of your 2×16’s. You are going to use a combination of pocket screws and wood glue to join together all 3 2×16’s to create your table top. This is when your larger clamps can come in handy if you have them!

That is by far the hardest part of this. Once your table top is done you will want to use wood filler to fill any cracks and sand the whole table down on the sides and top. It can be really tedious doing that much sanding but it is worth it.

Building a dining table

Attaching the Legs

Once your table top is up to your standards flip it upside down and it is time to assemble. Before you start to attach anything you need to find your placement of your ‘legs’.

We centered the legs in the middle width wise, then had them 16.5 inches in from the ends for the placement width. I felt that gave it good stability and clearance.

To assemble the legs you are going to go one by one. Place a 24 inch wood round down, and using wood glue and screws attach it to the table top. Next add an 18 inch round in the same way. Keep going until you have done 14 24 inch rounds on each side.

Let this dry for 24 hours before you flip the table!

Modern Dining room

Staining and Finishing

Once your Table is done – it is time stain and finish it. Before you stain, you need to wood condition the entire table. This will allow it to dry in a more uniform manner.

Next apply your stain, and finally finish it with 2 coats of a water based polyurethane sealer.

And then you are done!! Follow the the same steps above for the bench if you are gong to go that route!

Kids Halloween Party and Tablescape

Halloween is just around the corner, and as my kids have gotten older we have graduated from some of the ‘Boo Breakfast’ tablescapes, and have started doing a kids Halloween Party with them at some point in October. I wanted to share some fun inspiration on this years party so you can get to shopping and planning!

Kids Halloween Party

I have 2 October birthday kids, so Halloween themed parties are big in our household. This year we are doing a joint kids Halloween party birthday party, so this set up doubles over wonderfully for that.

My goal when I create kids parties is for it to be fairly easy to set up – yet magical for them to enjoy. I want there to be no worries if messes are made, and for it to be a space for fun and laughing, but for it to also leave a lasting impression on the kids.

cauldron and balloons centerpiece

This year I had an opportunity to partner with two of my favorite party gurus in St. Louis – The Party Hop Shop ladies, and we were able to make 2 tables capes happen in one day, to give you guys all the inspiration for your parties.

The tablescape I am sharing today is the kids Halloween party and the end results are seriously my favorite thing ever.

Making Halloween Magical for your Kids

We live in a social media era where at times it feels like we have to do a LOT to make holidays like Halloween magical for our kids. The truth is – that is not true! Sometimes it is the simple things that make it magical.

That said – I know for me, as a busy mom sometimes having ‘showy’ ways to add the magic is actually easier. I like having little traditions for making it feel like the holiday is coming and exciting for my kid.

Cauldron table centerpiece

This little kids Halloween party is one way to add that magic but another way is to give your kids a ‘Boo Basket’ or ‘Spooky Basket’. I personally don’t normally do a big basket, but sometimes do like to give them a pair of pajamas and a book so if that is more your thing those posts are linked!

Spooky Basket Fillers | Halloween Pajamas | Halloween Children’s Books

Shopping for the Kids Halloween Party

This year putting together my kids Halloween party got a bit easier than normal because I got the fun honor of compiling a Boo Box with Party Hop Shop. My idea when it came to picking the items in this box was that we could create a full table scape and fun, magical scene for our kids with only what is in the box.

Kids Halloween party table setting

For the sake of our over the top party we added a few other things, and I kept some of those items behind for their actual Halloween party, but we did use most of it in the tablescape.

Anything that isn’t in that box I head to Amazon prime for and I can whip up the parties SUPER FAST, or I head to the Dollar Store

Kids Halloween Party

Secret Little Hidden Gem

Dollar Tree is seriously such a hidden gem for parties and holidays. I have found so many aspects to our holiday decor there this year, and with he addition of some paint was good to go.

One other thing you may not know about Dollar Tree is that they normally always have heart and star balloons blown up. So that is a really inexpensive way to add some serious excitement to your party set up for your kids on a budget.

Kids Halloween Party – Boo Box

So I keep talking about the Boo Box, but what is in it? I wanted to share the link below incase you want to create this set up yourself.

Inside you will get – plates, napkins, straws, cups, tattoos, and other fun decor!

One thing we included in this years ‘Boo Box’ was a free printable Halloween Pennant. If you want to print them out – click the link below and it will direct download.

For mine I used hot glue to glue the pennant on a wooden skewer stick and tied some yarn around the stick for an added level of fun.

How to Create your Kids Halloween Party Set up

So now onto our exact set up and how we created the scene. I am going to share everything you need to create the look below!

What to Buy:

Hanging Hats and Star Balloons

How to Execute this Kids Halloween Party Set Up:

Ceiling

The first thing you want to do is hang those hats and balloons. We opted to tape the fishing line to the stars so they could hang the right way, and we tied fishing line to the very top of the hats.

You can also use a needle to go through the hats – it is whatever your preference is!

Kids Halloween Party Tablescape

For hanging them from the ceiling you have a few options. Gaffers tape can be great, but I have had it take paint off before. These command hooks are also a great option and tend to lead the paint alone really well too. The last option is white painters tape. That is likely your most visible but safest option, so you kind of have to weigh the options for your event.

The Table

If you are opting for a table cloth that is your obvious first step in your tablescape is to lay down your table cloth. We wanted a solid white base so went this route.

Once the table cloth is down the centerpiece needed to be next. Lay your cauldron on its side and add a small balloon garland for the ‘smoke’. For us, Party Hop Shop put together this balloon garland, but my friend Jen has a great tutorial if you want to make your own.

Kids Halloween Party Table in pink

Have the simple balloon garland ‘spilling’ out of the cauldron and laying on its side.

We used the plates, napkins, cups and straws from the Boo Box. For an added spot of fun we painted the skeleton hands from the dollar spot and added them to each place setting.

That was it – when it comes to kids parties and set ups make them SIMPLE! Make it where you can enjoy the party with your kids and they can enjoy it without you running around stress.

Storage 101: Pedestal Sink Storage Ideas For Stylish Homes

Pedestal sinks can be SO pretty, but can we please talk about the fact that in the bathroom we basically always need storage solutions? I am rounding up all the best pedestal sink storage ideas in this blog post to help you stay organized with the functionality of a pedestal sink.

Storage 101: Pedestal Sink Storage Ideas For Stylish Homes

We recently moved into a new to us house, and after a good four years without a pedestal sink we are again the proud owners of one. My husband, Sam and I are currently renovating and updating an 1860’s home in a quaint area of St. Louis, but that means some interesting sized rooms and spaces.

Our main floor powder room is one of those ‘strange’ spaces. When we purchased the home it was a full bath, but we renovated it to be smaller, which isn’t the normal move by someone, but we needed the space for our kitchen. Due to reducing the space the logical answer was a pedestal sink.

Pink bathroom with Pedestal Sink

There are several different options for bathroom storage ideas for a pedestal sink. Still, sometimes have to get creative to have enough room for everything you should have for a functional room.

Those needs change based on what kind of bathroom you are stocking. If your pedestal sink is in a full bath that you use for daily getting ready you will need more storage than if it is a powder room for guest bathroom.

Pedestal Sink Organization Ideas

Pedestal Sink Storage Considerations & Ideas

Depending on where you sink is located, you’ll have different needs to make your bathroom functional. The obvious call is a toilet paper, but there are other things that I think should be in a bathroom vanity cabinet, especially if anyone other than yourself is going to use the bathroom. Below is a good list of items to start your thinking on what you might want stored in a bathroom sink cabinet so you can gauge your storage needs.

  • Toilet Paper
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • extra soap
  • an extra hand towel
  • potpourri
  • air freshener

Again, these are [mostly] all optional things to have in a space guests would use, but might get you thinking.

Pedestal Sink in Bathroom
This gorgeous bathroom can be found here.

Open Shelves

One option for adding storage into many bathrooms is to incorporate some floating shelves. Luckily, right now that is a pretty on trend way to decorate, and it gives you the counter top space you are lacking due to the pedestal sink. You can easily include decor on your shelf that not only makes your space functional, but also stylish.

If you install floating shelves, naturally integrate decor with useful items onto shelves like I did below, For us we used a small basket to hold feminine hygiene products and a little jar with matches which is both useful and emphasizes the decorative aspect of your space.

Be sure to install the shelves in a place where you or your guests won’t hit their head or shoulders.

Hidden Shelf: Medicine Cabinet

Another great option that works well for anyone with a tiny space is to opt for a medicine cabinet. Our 150 year old house had medicine cabinets in all of our baths due to the small sizes. To help our space function well for a family of four, we are choosing some variation of the cabinets to remain.

When it comes to small spaces it is especially important to utilize unused space that would otherwise be completely wasted.

This is a helpful way to store beauty products, and small bathroom items while retaining a very clean look. I have rounded up several of my favorite more stylish medicine cabinets in this post because they have been on our list for a while.

In our guest bathroom we opted to do this mirror instead of the medicine cabinet, but have found that to be really helpful as well. It creates a level of storage without being so hard to install and find for the space.

Bathroom Wall Cabinets

Another option that I think can be tricky in execution (in terms of making it look great and be pretty) is a wall cabinet. The perk to something like this is it can create substantial storage space for things like cleaning supplies.

Overall Small Solutions

Another option for organizing your small bathroom is to add some smaller aspects that combined will give you most of the storage you might need.

1 – Toilet Paper Stacker: This can be a great solution for storing extra rolls of toilet paper. You can actually have one that both stores extra toilet paper and works as your normal toilet paper holder in one. Dual purpose is always helpful if the room is small.

2 – Wicker Basket – our guest bathroom has a TINY vanity and because of that there is no room for towels. We have tackled that issue with a lidded basket to hold all of our towels. It works great, and looks great at the same time.

3 – Door Hooks and Organizers – Bathroom door hooks are super great and important for storing towels and such when guests come if it is a full bathroom, but an extra option is to leave a hook and have something like this with hair brushes and hair tools that you can bring out if guests are coming.

If it is a bathroom you use daily, although it isn’t always the perfect solution in terms of beauty, you can have something like this hanging organizer for bathroom storage too. This would take the place of everything that normally goes in drawers and gives you great vertical space with easy access.

One Room Challenge Fall 2021: Week 1| Dining Room

I am SO excited to announce that I have decided to participate in the Better Homes and Gardens One Room Challenge for Fall 2021…So that means for the next 8 weeks you guys are going to get to watch me transform my dining room into a space that is more finished and more loved by our family.

One Room Challenge

One Room Challenge

Before I get to the dining room and my plans for the space I want to talk a bit more about what this challenge is, as well as how you can keep up with the progress on both my room as well as others that are participating!

What’s the One Room Challenge?

Twice a year Better Homes and Gardens puts on a Blog and Instagram challenge where bloggers and influencers take 8 weeks to makeover a space in their home. You will see big and small transformations, and it is a fun way for us to connect with others in the space, as well as push our creative limits.

How to Track my One Room Challenge Progress:

Now how to track my progress. Hopefully you are here because you are excited to follow along on MY One Room Challenge journey – So I want to walk you through how to best track my progress.

Blog

Every Thursday I will be updating you here on my blog with progress for the dining room. I will link to past posts, but you will also see right above the title to this blog post where it says ‘Fall 2021 ORC’ – all posts will also be there.

Instagram – @arinsolange

I will also be tracking progress on Instagram both in feed and in stories. To keep better track of what I am doing and the behind the scenes I have a highlight on my page that says ‘ORC’.

That highlight is going to give you lots of the dirty details, wins and fails and the general behind the scenes. I will also be sure to link items I find and am considering in that highlight.

Dining Room Makeover Plans

So like I said above – the dining room is going to be my room of choice for this challenge. Our dining room was fully renovated in stage one of our home renovation (for those of you new to my blog – we have been renovating an 1860’s home from top to bottom).

What we were left with after stage one is a very VERY blank slate, but also a fairly open space.. so it has left me struggling with my overall plan.

1860s dining room
This was the before of the dining room less than a year ago

My Plans:

I have been considering a couple of different full on ideas…which I am actually going to let you all vote on in on Instagram. But because of that – I clearly have decisions to make.

What I do have is some pretty broad plans that I know need tackled!

Furniture:

Right now we have very little happening in the room but there are a couple of FOR SURE items that will happen. 1: a new custom table. I plan to build a new table and bench to fit our space. I want something that serves our family well, while also fitting the aesthetic I love.

We also need to do new chairs in that!

Storage:

Some sort of storage needs to come into the room. I am thinking that will likely be in the form of a DIY of storts!

Decor:

We know we will add a rug to the space, but we also need to tackle window treatments and the walls. I have a few rug options that I am loving so need to figure out which plan I will go with and then pull the trigger.

The other thing we need to do is add lighting to the space. We currently do not have a dining room light and I think that needs to change.

Construction Changes:

We also need to do some other minor changes. I am considering some bold moulding on the walls or by the windows, arching an opening to the room, and several other small changes. But the small changes add up.

Idea 1

The first look contains the same table as look 2. Both looks have a slight vintage modern look to them, but this particular one has more color, and is slightly more casual in my opinion.

One room challenge mood board

In this look I am going for a pink wall, and black furniture to tone down the girly-ness of the pink.

Idea 2

This look is more glam, and directly vintage modern. In this look I would tie in pink in the rug and some accents but in much more subtle ways than look 1.

Vintage Modern Dining room Inspo

I equally love both looks, and love the idea of mixing and matching some of the items from each.

Both of these looks are NOT SET IN STONE. I tend to design as I move through the room. I need to see the table in the room to make a more final decision.

I know the general direction with the vintage modern, and want the room to feel bold and pretty but it is also open to the rest of the main house, so I want it to feel cohesive and like it makes sense.

I would love to hear which you would pick either in the comments below or on Instagram!

Creating a Home Date Night

After the last year and a half – one thing all parents need to master is the art of creating an at home date night.  I am going to share all about how my husband and I handle date night at home, and how a Walmart+membership can help you do it without ever leaving your home.

This post was sponsored by Walmart  – All opinions are my own, and I am so appreciative of you supporting the brands that support my blog.  Post may contain affiliate links.

Creating an at Home Date Night

Creating an At Home Date Night with Walmart+

I have 4 kids – which means that date nights are basically crucial for survival, but also not always the easiest to come by.  Between activities and the struggle to find a sitter over the years, Sam and I have really mastered creating home date nights to create time for each other no matter the circumstances of the week.

I have talked previously about how we use our Walmart+ membership for our weekly grocery orders. It has cut down on us scrambling with meals and food, and helped us gain some time and sanity back, but I also want to share about how to utilize those same great programs to create these date nights.

wine glasses on counter

Setting a Plan and Ordering

We don’t do date night at home every week, but when we do, one thing we have started to do is take turns planning the date.  Every other time is on the other person to plan what we will do and what we will eat.  We tend to cook together or most of the time I handle more of that, but the stress of planning not always being on me is great.

We are Friday night date night people so on Wednesdays whichever person is planning the date night does a Walmart+ order online. They order all ingredients needed, as well as anything else they might want for the date night. We set the delivery almost always for Friday morning.

wine and charcuterie board

Some weeks that means Sam orders me bubble bath and a candle and sends me upstairs for a bath before the kids are even in bed.  It makes it easier for him to be sweet and thoughtful when he isn’t scrambling in the store with all 4 kids.  We have ordered puzzles and games for some date nights, and sometimes we just plan to watch a movie.

My Walmart+ membership makes it so easy with Free Delivery From your store.  Fresh groceries and more can be delivered as soon as today and you are getting them at the same low prices you love.  There is a $35 minimum and some restrictions may apply.

Creating an at Home Date Night

How we Handle at Home Date Nights

On at home Date nights because NORMALLY I do the cooking, we put all the kids to bed at 7 – allowing the older kids to watch a movie in bed either alone or in one bedroom. This is pretty normal for them time wise, and we don’t set the expectation with ourselves that there will be ZERO interruption haha.

Once the kids are in bed we turn off distractions like phones and laptops and try really hard to be present while I cook and during dinner.  I think that is the key to getting out on a date night – you aren’t doing chores and you aren’t working and such.  So we just set those parameters at home.

When dinner is done we do NO DISHES. 9/10 times they live in the sink until morning and we allow ourselves to just relax.   – Again we know that if we had been on date night we would have come home to dishes in the sink from the kids, so we view it as the same thing.

It is such a great way to make a no excuses in making time for your marriage and yourself. So hopefully you can  try out a Walmart+ membership  to help plan your date nights and find time to unwind weekly.

How to Clean a Hairbrush from a Busy Mom

Okay, truth time… how often do you clean out your hairbrush? Do you even know how to clean a hairbrush, aside from ripping the hair out? I am here to teach you just how to keep those babies clean today!`

How to Clean a Hairbrush

I am ashamed to say this but I don’t clean my hair brushes nearly as much as I should.  Honestly, when it comes to keeping the house running, kids fed, blog written, and all of my DIY projects juggled, the last thing I have time for is remembering to clean out my hair brushes on a regular basis.

Not only is it a good habit to get into, but it is also just good basic hair care and hygiene.  The good news is I have some easy tips to share with you to help you with a thorough cleaning for all your hair brushes and to take your hair care to the next level.

neon hairbrush

Raise your hand if you’ve seen that viral Tik Tok video that Jessica Haizman posted of cleaning out her hair brushes? If you have, you will certainly have the image of that dirty water burned into your memory.  Haizman shows what steps she takes to clean her dirty hair brush.

While explaining, you see her take a fine tooth thin comb and remove the old dead hair and loose hair strands from the bristles of the brush.  From there, she places the paddle brushes into some hot water with a mixture of baking soda and some drops of shampoo.

After a few minutes, you’ll see the water turn a delightful brown color.  What is that brown color you ask?  If you thought the answer was hair dye, you would be wrong.  That brown is merely product residue, stray hairs, natural oils, and dead skin cells.  What a treat!  This is why it is a good idea to have a cleaning method for your hair tools.

What Makes Brushes Dirty?

Fortunately, taking care of your brushes is fairly quick with some simple steps.  The next time you feel like procrastinating and waiting to clean your dirty brushes, consider all of the excess hair, hair products, excess oil, and product buildup just waiting for your brush bristles to transfer to your scalp.

Your hairbrush contains dust mites, dead skin cells, and can be a breeding ground for bacteria leading to an itchy scalp or worse (head lice!).No matter your hair type, make sure you prioritize a good cleaning for your beauty tools (this includes makeup brushes friends!).

How to Clean a Hairbrush – Supplies:

The first step for your regular cleaning routine is to gather your supplies.  Most, if not all items you need are items you already have around your house!

  • Scissors
  • Rat Tail Comb
  • Clean toothbrush or old toothbrush
  • Cleaning powder of your choice! – I opted for baking soda + vinegar
How to Clean a hairbrush

How to Clean a Hairbrush

Here is your simple step by step cleaning process!

Step 1: Clean Base of the Brush

You’ll want to clean the strands of hair stuck in the base of your brush by taking your scissors or rat tail comb and clearing them out.  This may take some time depending on how much you have accumulated.

Step 2: Clean Brushes

Once you have the brush bristles free from hair, it is time to get to work and clean those brushes to rid your hair from hair sprays, oils, and too much product.  Even if you don’t use a lot of products, the average time you should go between cleaning your hair brushes is about 2 weeks.

Everytime you brush your hair, you are bringing what is on the bristles of your brush back into your scalp all with the stroke of a dirty brush. YUCK!

Let’s grab some cleaning power, shall we?  You can use a combination of warm water and gentle shampoo.  Some people prefer to add baking soda into the mixture.  You can also try a mixture of baking soda and a cup of vinegar.  The vinegar mixture will react with the baking soda and can help powerwash that unclean hairbrush.

how to clean a hairbrush
The after of the hairbrush

If you want to get real fancy, you can add a few drops of tea tree oil to your cleaning mixture.  Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.  Or, you could add a few drops of rubbing alcohol for sanitary purposes.  The choice is yours.  Once you have your cleaning power decided, fill up a sink with hot water and your soap of choice.

From there, let your plastic brushes soak in the soapy water mixture for 20-30 minutes.  If you have a wooden brush, soaking will not be an option as it will ruin the wood.  Instead, soak the bristles with the wooden handles or wooden part of the brush on the outside of the clean water.  You may need to take a toothbrush to scrub off any excess scum.

Step 3: Rinse and Dry

Once you have power scrubbed or soaked your brushes, rinse them with clean water and lay them to dry on a clean towel. Voila! Done.

This simple method is done easily in just a few minutes to give you a squeaky clean hairbrush!

Alternatively, you could just take a match and some lighter fluid to your hair brushes and instead buy some brand new clean hair brushes.  Either way, the choice is yours! Just don’t wait a long time to clean it or you’ll be in the same predicament again.

My Fav Brushes!

In case you are in need of buying some new hair brushes (hey no judgement), here is a round up of some of my favorite finds! I have 2 little girls – 1 with straight hair, and one with curly. And I myself have VERY long thick hair so I have tried them all!

Crave Brush – I LOVE this one on my girls, especially my curly haired daughter.

Wider Tooth Wet Brush – I prefer this one on me because my hair is so long and thick that the spread out Bristles help!

Also – not a hair brush but if you aren’t using these spray bottles yet, you should grab them.

Halloween Wreath Ideas

Last year I skipped the “Halloween” look and stuck with fall so this year knew I wanted to create an actual Halloween wreath. One thing that is so fun tho with Halloween and fall is that often times you can do a fall wreath then add the Halloween aspects closer to the holiday.

Halloween has gotten less all things Orange and black over the past few years with other fun color schemes that has made making Halloween wreaths so much more fun. Go with any color you like, and add inexpensive Halloween aspects.

Spiders, Skulls, Skeleton hands, Bats and so on are all easy Items to find and if you add a little spray paint you can make them exactly what you are looking for.

Pretty in Pink Halloween Wreath

My friend Rebecca put together this gorgeous pink and orange wreath that IS SPEAKING TO ME. If you have followed me for very long you know that pink is my thing…and Rebeccas recreation was picture perfect.

Palm Leaf Halloween Wreath DIY Tutorial

Now for my wreath this year. I LOVE how mine turned out, but will say you would want to put this somewhere covered or inside if you get a lot of rain due to some of it being paper.

This is a tutorial you can make your own in terms of color, and size – I went big, because who doesn’t want a huge example picture…but smaller will cost less and be a bit easier!

Palm Leaf Halloween Wreath

Halloween Wreath Supply List

Palm Leaf Halloween Wreath

Tutorial for The Palm Leaf Halloween Wreath

  1. The first thing is going to be making lots of different shapes and sizes (and possibly colors) of paper palm leaves. I personally googled that and found probably 5 or 6 tutorials that I mixed together to make my palm leaves. One thing to keep in mind is that you have the most control in size with these palm leaves so try to make them look different than the store bought palms.
  2. Once you have a bunch of your palms made you an start assembling. I started in one spot and had 3 large pink palms going in different directions in that spot. I personally used floral wire to secure them well in several places.
  3. Once that first batch is on it is time to start working away from the starting spot. For some reference – I personally only had a few more sprigs going ‘Up’ from that first batch of pink, the rest went in a general counter clockwise motion around the wreath. Using floral wire add in some base pieces, then layer in pieces with hot glue.
  4. The hot glue is tricky – you might have to put heavy things on top of the pieces hot glued while it dries. And in this case…more is MORE! you need a good amount of hot glue the pieces you are adding to the wreath.
  5. Once you are done – cut some bats in various sizes from construction paper (you can easily print some things to copy!) and glue them at random.
Palm Leaf Halloween Wreath

Okat that is the overall idea…but that mght be clear as mud to some of you. So if that is you. let me try to explain better. You will SLOWLY add in items – you may have to flip the wreath from time to time so you can use the floral wire on the back.

Work as you go and get each reaction sort of ‘pretty’. I personally focused on using the dried palms that I bought first because those were easier to floral wire in, then I added in the paper ones next because those needed hot glue.

I personally tried to do as little glueing as I could on my more expensive palm leaves because I knew I could use those in a vase next year (because…blogger world means new wreaths yearly ha!)

That is it! It honestly wasn’t a hard wreath to make, you just have to take your time and be patient getting everything stuck on well.

Cement Ghost planters

Ghost Planters

I have been loving all things ghosts this year for Halloween decor, and really wanted some ghost planters, but couldn’t find anything on the market…so as per usual for me I took to a simple diy.

Picking Cement

This is an aspect of cement planters you probably wouldn’t think of until it is time to make your first planter, so I want to share a few things to think about in terms of in terms of purchasing the cement before you go to the store.

Cement ghost planter
  1. Ghosts are white – you can save yourself the painting process if you go with a white cement. I wish I had thought of this prior to making my ghosts.
  2. You want a smoother finish than some cement can give you. I went with Countertop concrete. If you don’t mind painting – that is easy to find at your local hardware store.
Ghost Planter

A great option for both white cement that is going to be a fine and smooth when dried is this Portland cement. Depending on the size of planters you are planning to do you will need several bags of that. I personally went through about 115 lbs of cement on the 5 planters I made – but have some ways to cut down on cement in the tips lower in this post.

ghost planter on wood legs

Supplies Needed for DIY Ghost Planters

Before I get to your exact supply list there are a few things I want to break down. The biggest thing is the size of the planters as well as the size of the ‘inner pot.’

The bigger the planter the more cement you will use – so take that into account when it comes to cost. That said, the more space you can take up with your ‘inner pot’ (aka where the plant will go) will mean less cement. I went with the biggest inner pot I could while keeping the top shape in tact which saved us a lot of cement!

Ghost pots with plants

Next – get creative. The inner pot can be anything you have on hand that will fit a plant. For the smaller sizes I used an old plastic cup and a glass yogurt jar. This helped save money on pot portion of things.

Ghost Planter

Shopping List:

  • Pots/ containers – I found that plastic was best – you just need something you can cut and remove for the outside material. Each plant needs 2 containers, and the smaller one needs to fit all the way down on the bottom of the outside pot when upside down.
  • Cement – Like I said, I went with this cement but it did dry grey. If I were to do it again I would have used this one that dries white.
  • White and black paint if you didn’t use white cement. If you did use white cement you just need a small amount of black paint.
  • 5 Gallon bucket for mixing cement
  • Plastic Easter eggs that open ‘hot dog’ not hamburger
  • Hog glue gun

How to Make Ghost Planters

Alright now onto the DIY and how to make your DIY ghost planters.

planter with cement
  1. Take your 2 halves of your Easter egg and hot glue them inside your planter. You want to go about 2/3 of the way to the bottom because when you are done the bottom will become the top.
  2. Hot Glue your inner container to the bottom of the planter. It doesn’t have to be amazingly stuck, but you want it to not wiggle around when you pour the cement.
  3. Now your planters are ready, so it is time to make your cement. Mix your cement in a bucket…Honestly – we went a little more ‘loose’ than the bag said and it was fine.
  4. Pour it in your planter, then sort of shake the pot for the next 10 min off and on. This will help it settle well. and give you less divits.
  5. Let the planter sit for 24 full hours!
  6. Once it is dry – you can cut it open. We used our multi tool – but anything you have will work. You need to cut the plastic to peel it away and reveal the inner cement. We left the inside pot where it was because it was hard to remove and doesn’t matter.
  7. Now use some pliers to remove the Easter egg ‘eyes’.
  8. How you have the optional paint step – you can skip this all together or do just some or all. I personally painted my planters white and the eyes black. Part of me wishes I had left them cement and only painted the eyes…either way do as you wish!
cement ghost planter

And that is it…I know it is seriously so simple. The eyes were the hardest part and once I thought of the eggs we were good to go!
