Pushing aside Mom Guilt

Pushing Aside Mom Guilt

The past year has been so hard.  Bringing three kids home has been rewarding, and trying all at once.  Finding balance has been harder than I ever dreamed possible, and in turn when I think about the first year with three kids one thing that keeps standing out to me was how much mom guilt I have felt.  But as much as its been a strong emotion in the past year, I am really pushing myself in pushing mom guilt aside in the next year.

Just like all other moms I am constantly striving to make the best decisions for my kids.  I want nothing more than for them to grow up loving God, loving others, and remembering their childhood with a smile, but that is a lot of pressure. And in today’s culture of the constant memes and reminders of things like “you only have 18 summers, so make every second count”, I am constantly feeling as though I am less than, or failing my kids when I have a bad day or have to get house work done so we’re not at the zoo.  In the back of my head every bad or busy day is a wasted moment of those precious 18 years they are home.

mom and daughter

I don’t think this is all bad.  I mean I think that like anything else, sometimes guilt or remorse pushes you to do better, and be better.  And trust me I want nothing more than to wake up a better mom every day, but I also want to feel less pressure to be perfect.

I decided that this summer I would keep Jack and Avé home from camps and classes because I really wanted to enjoy the summer with them.  Last year Walker was a newborn, so this summer was going to be nothing but fun. But, because I felt like I needed to be the perfect mom who soaked up every second with my kids,  I ended up not trusting my own gut and my own intuition. I know that my kids do better with some structure. And know that I DO BETTER with some time to get done with my never ending to-do list and work so I can be the kind of mom I need to be.

mom and kids in living room

I let the pressure and guilt of being the perfect mom become a stronger force than the voice inside of me that knows how to parent my kids well.  All of this is just to say that I am realizing that the hard work and guilt that goes along with parenting isn’t getting easier. Pushing mom guilt aside is always going to take work.  As moms we are never going to do it right in the eyes of everyone around us.  But if we love our children well, we are doing a good job and need to let go of some of the guilt.  We need to allow ourselves to have time for ourselves. We need to take time with our husbands, and remember that we are allowed to have bad days, and realize that not every day has to be sunshine and rainbows by the pool to make for a happy childhood.  That balance and a happy mom will be remembered well by our kids, and that the guilt we are feeling means we do love them and we are doing a good job.

The guilt, at least for me is stealing joy from a stage of life I have aways dreamt of.  So for me it’s a goal to let that go.  To remind myself that if today was not a good day, or our best day as family, that the next day can be.  And that God willing, there is always a tomorrow to enjoy those precious souls.  So instead of laying my head down in guilt at night, I am going to push that mom guilt aside and lay my head down with gratitude for the job I was given in raising them, and wake up ready to take on a new day with a smile!

Amazon Boy’s Room Finds

Who else is a fan of Amazon decor?  If you have been around for very long on my blog then you know it’s a go to for me when it comes to items for my home.  I rounded up Amazon Boy’s room finds today, and love that there is such a huge variety of items that won’t be in ever other room you see!

Amazon Boy’s Room Finds

boys room with 2 beds and neutral decor from Amazon

As a mama of 2 boys I know that decorating a boys room can sometimes feel tricker than a girls room.  I have 2 of each and feel like at this point I can say that with some certainty.  There isn’t as big of a variety on the market in stores, so sometimes you can feel stifled.

I personally tend to lean towards a pretty clean, modern look when I decorate with a splash of farmhouse.  But I am also a HUGE supporter in decorate your home for YOU.  Don’t follow a style, just make it so that you love it, and so that you can live in the space and enjoy it.

Amazon for Home Decor

I am personally a big fan of using Amazon when I’m finishing decorating spaces, but with so much to sift through its a bit overwhelming.  I have loved finding unique find for basically every room of my house, and have so many blog posts on the matter that you can find below.

I think one common misconception is that nothing on Amazon is high quality, which just isn’t the case.  Sometimes you will spend just as much or more on Amazon, but you will also many times find a great deal on just what you wanted.

Efficient Cleaning Tips

Let’s talk cleaning.  Whether you love it or hate it, finding time for it is not an easy part of life with little ones running around.  The older my kids get, and the more of them we have, I am finding that cleaning and chores aren’t just as easy to get done as they used to be.  I wanted to do a quick post on what I do to make cleaning an easier, more efficient part of my life, and talk about how we keep our house up to my standards. I will link everything in the photo below so you can save it for later incase you don’t have any of these items!

Must Do’s for Efficient Cleaning

When it comes to efficient cleaning and keeping your house clean, before you even get to the “must haves” you need to follow a few “must do’s”. If you’re a mom that is going to start with first and foremost, keep your kids toys cleaned up, put away, and organized.  Have them help you.  My older two clean up all of the toys at 3 and 5 and know that it has to be done anytime we are leaving home or we are not going to be playing for a while (IE – nap time, bed time and so on).

The next is to have a game plan.  Having a system in place will help you to keep things clean and organized.  My system changes all the time, but I just find one that works with our current state of life and we go with it.  Currently I am using the printables from this post to keep us organized.  Then when we need to deep clean I use this checklist.  For me lists and set days for deeper cleaning personally work better.

Must Haves for Efficient Cleaning

Now, once you have a game plan there are some things you should have to make keeping your home clean easier, and to make cleaning day go more quickly.

  1. Shark Cordless Vacuum – I have three young kids, so the ease of whipping this out for big messes and hauling it all over all 3 floors of our house has been AN AMAZING purchase.
  2. collapsible Laundry Baskets – I like to keep extra baskets.  When I’m cleaning, if I want to strip sheets or I am hauling things back to the floor they should be on I use laundry baskets, and these are my favorite for storage!
  3. Magic Erasers – If you know me, you know I am obsessed with these.  I literally think they can do anything.  (seriously even take paint off skin haha) But when you’re cleaning these will take the scuffs off walls very easily, but my favorite use is to clean bathtubs. They cut through any dirt on the tubs in an instant.
  4. Clorox wipes – Half the battle with cleaning is that if your house is a disaster when cleaning day comes you will spend so much more time cleaning.  Keep some wipes in each bathroom and under your kitchen sink for a daily wipe down.
  5. Dusting mit – this baby is honestly worth the hype!
  6. A cleaning Caddy –  All my cleaning supplies stay in a caddy that I can move from room to room while I’m cleaning so that I don’t waste so much time heading back to the laundry room.
  7. Bobi – similar to what I said about Clorox wipes. We run our BobSweep daily so that sweeping or vacuuming doesn’t have to fall on me daily and it’s not such a big job when cleaning day rolls around.  For moms of kids or dogs this is a must have!
  8. Refillable Mop – I love that I don’t have to go back to the sink and it makes it easier for small spills.
  9. Toilet Wand System – If you haven’t tried these, you need to check them out! They clean toilets so much quicker and easier and you don’t have the gross brush lying around!!

Over all to me its all about maintenance in between cleaning sessions and organization.  Staying on top of things will always make it easier.  Make sure you have checked out this post before you leave for more on that subject, as well as grabbing this printable deep cleaning list! And if you’re looking for more areas of your life to simplify, check out my Simplifying Laundry post that changed my life!

Walker’s Burger Bash

Our sweet Walker John is ONE.  I can’t even believe it. I’ll do another post this week talking more about his first year and our first year adjusting to life with 3 kids, but for todays post…lets talk birthday parties!! We threw Walker a hamburger themed party this past weekend for his first birthday, and it was the most fun, and easily thrown together party yet.  The wind wasn’t in my favor for some of the decor, but overall it was such a fun party spent with the people who love our sweet boy the most.

Hamburger Themed Party

I went with a burger theme for something new, and because our chunk of a boy LOVES FOOD.  After countless birthday parties the last 5.5 years I knew I wanted the party to be simple and fun.  I wanted to enjoy the day with my baby!  Decor was pretty minimal.  There was a balloon arch for the cake smash (however the wind was not on our side for that, so I did pull it inside for some photos to show you all).  If you’re looking for how I create my balloon arches, check my highlights on Instagram for videos of a few options, as well as this blog post.

Walker's Burger Bash

I ordered a napkin dispenser, food baskets and liners, straw holder, and a few fun balloons.  For food we made it VERY simple.  Red Robin catered a burger bar and chips, there were cookies and a milkshake bar for dessert, and we ordered personalized coke bottles for each of the guests as a fun little aspect.  Overall it was a simple fun party and we had a great time.  I will link all of the items below, and if you have any questions please feel free to email me or leave a comment.  The menu and burger bash print were homemade.

Packing up to hit the beach with kids is no easy task!! My kids could live at the beach if I let them, so I decided to round up all of my favorite items for when we hit the beach in this baby beach must-haves post!

Beach Must Haves for Baby and Kids

My husband and I LOVE the beach.  When we were newlyweds we moved to Destin, FL for a year and truly soaked up that beach life.  We also got married in a beach wedding – so getting our kids to the beach often is so important to us.

We tend to be at the beach 2 -4 times a year, and have been doing that since we had our first baby 8 years ago.  Over time I have really streamlined what we take and how we do things.

Nothing like carrying kids when its 100 degrees to make you figure out the best way to function on the beach!

Toddler Boy running on beach

In this post I will talk about great options for your beach vacation whether you are flying or driving. – the reality of it is, if you are flying there are things you need to leave behind, and if you are driving I would definitely say make the space in your car for everything I recommend.

Packing up for the beach is so much work! Add kids and babies into the mix and it doesn’t get any easier.  I have 4 kids, and we head to the beach a few times a year, so I feel like I have truly mastered the art of what to take (and what not to take) over time.

I tried to include some options that are more compact if you are flying, as well as options that are even more desirable if you are driving and have a bit more space.

Baby and toddler beach must haves

What to pack when flying to the beach with kids?

Beach trips are a bit more complicated if you are flying, but I learned a couple of things a few years ago when we hit the beach for just a few hours on a short trip to California.

If you aren’t going to be spending a ton of time on the beach, but want to still help your kids enjoy the time. Have only the essentials.

You will want a bag of some sorts – the bag in this post is my favorite beach bag because it’s huge, but it has waterproof pockets and such that makes it take over the need for wet bags and such!

Another great option is the Bogg Bag. They are an investment item, but well worth it!

The small towel is also super helpful to have on hand. It won’t take up a ton of room in your bag! I also always make the Sonder sand proof mat work – we honestly use this mat in the airport to sit on floors, or in the hotel room for little ones on the carpet, so you will use it multiple times!

Then go to the dollar store and grab a couple of spoons and disposable pie dishes and such – spend less than $5 and use those items instead of shovels and such.  That way your kids can play but you aren’t wasting a lot of money on items you can’t take home.

You can also grab things like spoons and cups from a continental breakfast to use.  Kids just want items to dig with – so anything that can be used then thrown away is great.

That said – if you will be spending more of your trip at the beach, I suggest taking many more of the suggestions below into consideration!!

What do you need for a family beach trip?

I own every item in the image below, and truly love them.  Aside from the wagon we take everything EVERY TIME we go to the beach whether we are flying or driving.  I think when you travel, sometimes making room for the things that are really needed is smart no matter what it takes up space wise!

I am working on a pool favorites post,  but in the mean time – I wanted to share a baby pool float that we got for our baby girl this year that is a game changer!!

Honestly I am so mad we didn’t have it with our older 3 kids.  They can use it in several ways, and our baby girl LOVED it.

And now finally to the beach favorites !!

Baby Beach Must Haves

  1. Small shammy style towels are a must have. They take up much less room!!
  2. Snack stackers for snacks
  3. The BevPod is my new MVP. Instead of lugging a large cooler, this holds the perfect amount of cans (10!) for a day at the beach.
  4. If you are taking food or not – Bring some collapsible containers with lids – you can use the containers and the lids as trays for your kids to eat on and keep sand out of their food.
  5. Sandscreen is a talc free, reef friendly sand removal bag
  6. As moms we almost always have our phones out and handy – this pouch will keep your phone dry and free from sand.
  7. This is the best compact fan I’ve tried. Perfect for little ones to sit in front of.
  8. This compact pump is perfect for inflatable toys!
  9. This durable mat is perfect for hanging beachside
  10. If you don’t want tot take a full on beach tent – this little thing allows you to put some water in the dip for a baby to stay cool without taking them in the water.
  11. I keep a durable bag on hand to keep goggles together.
  12. Baby powder puff – the most effective way to remove sand from little hands
  13. Bags for dirty diapers  or trash – but especially diapers!!!
  14. Bogg Bag – worth the hype and the cost when you pick up the bag and see all the sand just fall out as you walk off the beach or when you wipe off all the spilled snacks with a wet wipe.
  15. These small little towels are great for keeping yourself or your kids cool. Simply get them wet and put them on your neck and it will keep you/them so much cooler.
  16. Silicone makeup sponge holder – apply sunscreen with a makeup sponge and put it in this holder to keep the mess out of your bag and sand free
  17. These silicone brushes help so so much in taking the sand off! (if you have a surgical sponge it also works great!)
  18. Collapsible buckets which will make your trip from the car much happier
  19. This small pump is perfect for sunscreen. It releases a small amount so your kids don’t waste an entire expensive tube of sunscreen.
  20. Brush on Mineral Sunscreen – the ease of application CANNOT BE BEAT and is the only way I can apply sunscreen to my kids scalp.
  21. Convertible beach chair/wagon – there is no other way to do a solo parenting beach day with all the kids
  22. And don’t forget the beauty blenders to easily apply sunscreen to your little ones’ faces. These come with a case + a drying holder.
  23. These bags are perfect if you don’t want to take all the sand home with you.

DIY Swingset Makeover

I am SO excited to share yet another playhouse makeover with you guys!! We have been planning on doing a painted swing set all spring, but needed a good dry weekend with NO chance of rain to make it happen.

We had your typical backyard swingset that really needed to be stained or painted this year so there was no time like the present. Read below to check out how we did our DIY swingset makeover.

If you want to see more of our love for playhouses check out this post for an understairs playhouse, and this post for a plastic playhouse update, and follow along with #ArinsCuteCottages on Instagram!

DIY PAINTED SWING SET MAKEOVER

I think it goes without saying that first things first you need a swingset.  We personally have the one in the image below.  I will talk about the structural changes we made on ours, but yours could be slightly different based on your original structure.

SAM's Club Swingset

Getting It Structurally Ready

We took off the climbing wall the was originally attached to where our slide is.  We then took off the slide and attached that where the climbing wall was before.  That was easy as can be, and moved the slide to the side of the structure. old wooden swingset | DIY Swingset Makeover

We then used some boards to close up the hole where the slide was.  This gave me a pretty “house front” and also relieved some stress for me because we had less holes high up for our young kids to fall from. Dismantled wood climbing wall | DIY Swingset Makeover

The only other structural change was removing the small bar seating that was on the bottom level.  Our kids NEVER once sat on them so it didn’t make sense to keep that part. Old wooden swingset | DIY Swingset Makeover

Clean Up

Now that those steps are done it’s all about clean up.  You need to get as much of the old stain, and dirt and stuff off before you start painting.  First you will want to power wash the swing set.

Remove all the accessories you can.  Handlebars, swings, slide and so on.  Remove the door.

Now let it fully dry.  This may not take too long if you are doing it in the middle of the summer!White swingset with magnolia wreath | DIY Swingset Makeover

Now to Paint!

Now for the fun part.  You will be amazed at the difference the first 10 min of this next part makes!

One thing to note – you need to paint with an OUTDOOR PAINT!

Personally, we purchased this paint sprayer, which allowed us to paint the whole playset in 2.5 gallons of paint and just an hour per coat.  To us that was TOTALLY worth it, and the paint sprayer was AMAZING!!

We started by paining everything white.  We taped off the metal corner brackets on the swing bar because those couldn’t be removed and we wanted them to stay green. We did the whole thing, inside and outside.

We then let that first coat dry over night and did a second coat the next night!Kids on white swingset | DIY Swingset Makeover

The door was painted black separately while removed with a can of black spray paint.

Once everything else was done being painted we simply used some black paint we had and a roller to paint the roof. Go slowly so you don’t drip on the white!Kids swinging on DIY swingset | DIY Swingset Makeover

Re – assemble

Attach the slide and handles where necessary and re-hang swings

Add accessories if you so choose. This is where you can get creative.  I personally left ours pretty plain because I know I will have fun decorating it for the seasons.  I added this thermometer that I love, these planter boxes, and a magnolia wreath that can be changed out seasonally.swingset planters | DIY Swingset Makeover

Re attach the door – we did a new handle also.

Fill inner under portion with mulch or rock.  Grass will die In there so you’re better off doing something to keep from muddy feet.  We personally chose small pebbles and it has been perfect!

Update on the Painted Swing set

I get asked A LOT how this is holding up.  It has been roughly 2 years since this DIY and stockingly it is doing well.  I would say that the overall swing set is holding up just as well if not better than it would have if it had been stained.

The bottom where the trimmer and lawn mower get it has had the hardest time, and we have had to reroller the roof one time, which is about a 10 min process.  Over all I have been very impressed with how it has held up and would definitely recommend it!

No-Bake Chocolate Coconut Bars Recipe

How many of you remember the amazing recipe I posted from the amazing Kara Swanson a few months back?  Because I am a dud at coming up with recipes, and can’t stop eating her loaded sweet potato recipe, she was kind enough to share another amazing one with you all and let me tell you THEY ARE AMAZING!! Below you will find Kara’s No-bake Chocolate Coconut Bars recipe, and I hope you enjoy!

Also if you check out my Instagram this week you will see a giveaway for her amazing meal plan! We have been using it for the past week and I feel amazing, so be sure to enter!!

No-Bake Chocolate Coconut Bars

If you’re anything like me and your love for chocolate runs deep into your veins then you are going to L O V E this recipe. Yes, as a nutritionist, I love all the things chocolate and have it every.single.day. It won’t ever not be a part of my life.

But instead of sugary treats I love making healthier options that satisfy my cravings for sweets but don’t leave me feeling icky after.

Which is why I’m so excited to share this No-Bake Chocolate Coconut Bars recipe. They are the perfect after dinner treat or you can add some protein for a post workout snack. Whip up a batch for your next BBQ or Friday game night with friends. It’s a crowd pleaser and one that I make over and over when entertaining.

But I’m warning you, it will be so hard not to eat the entire pan. However, I wouldn’t judge if you did because I have come pretty close to doing that myself. Just call me the dessert queen over here. Proof you can still be healthy while eating your favorite foods. Not that you should overeat desserts – I don’t recommend overeating no matter how healthy the dessert may be.

These No-Bake Chocolate Coconut Bars are packed with chocolate, coconut, peanut butter and just the right sweetness. They are gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free but definitely do not lack flavor.

I love using honey as a healthier alternative because it doesn’t cause a spike in your blood sugar levels like regular white sugar. It’s one of my go-to choices for a sweetener when baking.

If you’re looking to satisfy your chocolate cravings in a healthier way or need something for your next party, this recipe is for you.

Amazon Girls Room Finds

Although I love all home decor, I would be lying if I said kids spaces aren’t my favorite!  Kids are so fun and full of life, and their personalities really get to shine in their spaces, and finding unique items to fit them is the icing on the cake.  I rounded up some Amazon Girl’s room finds here in this post to help you finish your perfect room.

Amazon Girl’s Room Finds

I have recently been working on some updates to Avé’s room and although I love to shop all over the place, nothing is better than the click of a button from Amazon! You all loved my affordable Amazon decor finds so much that I decided I would share with you my currently favorite Amazon girls room decor finds.

Amazon is such a great source of everything from the full room to the finishing touches – I always try to make these round ups a bit of a way to buy one or buy all to make a complete room.

  1. These rope baskets are my favorite all over the house.  I have talked about them before HERE, HERE & HERE, and use them in my living room but I love that they come in several sizes, and the best thing about Amazon is you can find them time and time again if you need more matches.
  2. Pineapple Piggy Bank
  3. These Ikea book ledges are my favorite way to display books.  You can see how I have used them in these posts ( Modern Boys room // Basement Update // Basement )
  4. Love these pink buffalo Check pillows!
  5. Little Unicorn quilts
  6. This is the rug we have in Avé’s room currently and I love it.
  7. This lamp is a great knock off to the lamp in Avé’s room that Pottery Barn no longer sells.  It’s such a fun statement piece.
  8. Clear Kids Chair – comes in pink too
  9. Wood eyelash wall decor
  10. Ratan Pouf – We have a good pouf currently in Avé’s room, but my favorite thing about using poufs in kids rooms is that they work as a seat and also a great step stool to get into bed or their closet.
  11. Sheets
  12. House wall shelf two pack
  13. Rainbow pillow – I have had my eye on this for Avé’s room!!
  14. Sweet little Jenny Lind bed (for a great price!!)

Hopefully this runs up helps you find amazing items to finish your girls room, and be sure to follow me on Instagram for more finds frequently!

Black Buffalo Check Decor

  1. I love these curtains – they come in two lengths and the less “perfect” buffalo check is SO cute.
  2. A simple throw
  3. This rug comes in several sizes.  I personally used it in a layered look HERE.
  4. Outdoor Umbrella
  5. Table Runner
  6. Walker has this Anywhere chair, and I am obsessed!!
  7. Again I love the messier stripes on this crib sheet
  8. You will freak when you see how inexpensive these throw pillows are ( I also linked them here!)
  9. I am obsessing over these chairs.
  10. These disposable plates are perfect for any occasion.
  11. Headboard

If you are loving the black buffalo check trend as much as I am, I’m sure I just added to your wish list.  If you follow me on Instagram I am sure you know I have [similar] throw pillows to the ones above (but I sewed mine a couple years ago), and my front porch overhaul included that fun rug from above! Be sure to check out that post to see how it can be styled!
