The holidays are right around the corner and I always promise myself that I’ll get my shopping started early.  Inevitably, I’m always scrambling the week before Christmas to finish up my holiday gifts even though my gift guides are out in October!

I normally focus on gifts for younger kids since my own kids are 10 years old and younger. But, if you have a young adult in your life, specifically, a college girl, you are in luck.  I’ll focus on the best gifts for college girls and help you find something that they will love!

The Best Gifts For College Girls: 20 Gifts For College Students

When I’m thinking about what type of gifts to get my loved ones, I always try to think of practical gifts.  At the same time, I want what I buy to be a fun gift, so it has to be both practical and fun.  One great way to find the ideal gift is to think about the person you are buying for and who they are to you. I know that sounds obvious, but nowadays, we are so busy that often, people will go the gift card route.

Make It A Practical & Fun Gift Idea

One of my favorite parts about gift giving is seeing the expression of the person receiving your gift.  As an added bonus, it is always extra special when the person receiving your gift didn’t even know they wanted it until they had it.  So if you go the gift card route, you could include a gift card to a new restaurant that just opened in town. This is the perfect way to blend originality and practicality.

An Amazon gift card is always a practical option for those college students and teens who love Amazon. You could even gift a year of Amazon prime membership for those college students so that they can get all the benefits of Amazon prime student membership year round.

Check out my tips for creating magical presents.

Before you buy a gift, you should not only think about the person, but think about what will benefit that specific person.  For college aged kids, they may be a first time college-bound student or they could be a recent college-graduate.

Check out my tips for a simple and white Christmas decor.

Both of these college students are at a crossroad in their life and can benefit from something entirely different. For busy college students, a gift that can make their life easier is a great option. Whereas, the recent college grad may love something that is more sentimental. A portable charger versus a diploma frame are great options.

Considerations When Buying For A College Girl

Keep your college students in mind before picking out a gift. You’ll want to consider some key questions before picking out the best gift.

What are their hobbies? Do they have something that they would like to learn more about or are they already an expert in a field and would like to add to their collection?

Do they have any Amazon wish lists? Wishlists are my favorite.  While they take the originality out of the gift, you know you are giving something that your best friend actually wants.

Gifts For The College Girl Who Has Everything

What about those young ladies that seem to have everything or say they want nothing.

While I like to think about the wants and needs of each person, it never fails to have someone in my family say “I don’t want or need anything.”  In those instances, you have someone who you will need to think outside the box.  For the college students who have everything, I always like to think of a charity that is near to their heart.

If they are an animal lover, a donation in their name to an animal shelter may be a good idea.  Another special gift may be spending time with that person.  You could plan a day of activities and spend a long day together making memories doing all the things you both love.

6 Steps To Add Picture Frame Molding To Any Room

This is a long overdue blog post but I hope you will find it worth the wait! A while back, Sam and I decided to give our bathroom and dining room a facelift.  The plain white walls were screaming for a custom touch.  We decided to create a feature wall in our bathroom that brought a level of subtle sophistication. We ended up loving the end result so much we recreated it in the entire room of our dining space. So what DIY did we ultimately do? I’ll go over the design plan and all the steps we took for our DIY picture frame molding batten walls that adds even more character to our historic home.

6 Steps To Add Picture Frame Molding To Any Room

One of my goals when creating our DIY picture frame moulding in our bathroom was to create a focal wall that would stand out among our claw foot tub. Since we have both modern and vintage design elements in our home, I wanted to pair our vintage tub with a more modern accent wall.

The Benefits Of Picture Frame Moulding

Rather than install popular wall treatments like board and batten or wainscotting, we opted to install this beautiful picture frame moulding.  Here are a few of the benefits of adding these interior projects to our bathroom and dining room:

  1. Creates Texture To Walls

I love that the wall moulding adds texture to the walls and elongates the ceilings in our bathroom.

  1. Hides Imperfections

If you have an older home like we do, you may have walls that are uneven or have imperfections.  Adding picture moulding is a great way to hide those imperfections.  Now for full disclosures, if you have uneven walls, installing your picture moulding may be a bit more cumbersome.  Otherwise, recreating this look is relatively user-friendly and fairly inexpensive.

  1. Custom Built Look For Less

If you have ever built a home, you’ll know that every single item adds up.  That means that you pay for not only the materials you use, but also how you use those materials with labor charges.  If you use a reputable contractor and quality materials, you’re looking at an expensive build.

You don’t have to have a custom built home to get that same look.  Built-ins, crown moulding, and board and batten walls all add value to your home.  You can create these traditional designs by DIYing them yourself without spending a fortune. By doing so, you are creating a classic look that gives a custom built appearance.

  1. Pairs Well With Historical Homes

One of the biggest reasons we opted to install shadow box moulding in our home was simply because of its design properties.  Crown moulding ties in perfectly with our historic home and vintage design. By creating our own gallery wall in our bathroom and extending it to the main walls in our dining room, we made our historic home even more charming.

Tools & Supplies List For Wood Picture Frame Mouldings

For the most part, you should have the majority of the supplies laying around your garage or tool box.  The biggest expense will be your base cap moulding due to the increase in wood prices.  If you need to be conservative with your budget, it may be wise to scale back your plans and focus on one accent wall. You can always add more moulding at a later day.

Time wise, you can knock this project out in a single weekend. This is a great beginner project that you can complete with your best friend or partner.

6 Steps To Build Your Own Picture Frame Moulding Accent Wall

Without further ado, here are the steps to create your very own DIY picture frame moulding accent wall!

Decide On A Plan

The first step you have to do before you can install picture frame boxes is to decide on a plan.  A good starting point is to first decide if you want to do an entire wall as a focal point or create the look across the entire room for multiple focal points.

Because we were doing this project in our bathroom, we decided to only go for one accent wall.  Our master bathroom has a glorious claw foot tub.  I didn’t want the entire space to be outfitted with picture frame moulding and take anything away from the clawfoot tub.  Instead, I think the gallery wall complements the tub and vice versa.

Once Sam and I realized how much we liked the look, we went ahead and applied the technique to our entire dining room.  If you end up applying the look to an entire room, say a living room, feel free to add chair railing to break up the space and further enhance the architectural details of your room.

If you do decide to install chair railing, you’ll need to take this into account for height placement on your walls, and then plan your design accordingly around it.

vintage mordern dining in black and white

For this blog post, I’ll be sticking to our picture frame moulding that was completed in our bathroom.  We opted to not install any chair railing.  I

I wanted something that would complement the height of our tall ceilings and have our bathroom feel larger and wider.  For sake of symmetry, I chose to install four rows of frames both horizontally and vertically.

Map It Out

I’m a very visual person and tend to need to share my vision with Sam so we can both fully see it on paper in order to execute it in reality. I grabbed a piece of paper, my tape measure, and a pencil and got to work.  The first thing I needed to do was measure the wall space where the picture frame moulding would be installed.

I measured our wall to be 148 inches high by 108 inches wide.  Now that I have the height and length of the wall space, I can go ahead and map out how I want the design to look.  I’ll need to take into account the fact that we have 3 inch baseboards.  I also want each frame to be about 3 inches apart from one another and be 3 inches (so 6 inches with baseboards) from the floor and the ceiling.

Mapping out the design of four frames by four frames, I was able to calculate how tall and wide each frame would need to be taking into account my measurements and preferences.  After a lot of work in my head and on paper, I came to the conclusion that the moulding boxes would need to measure 23.25 inches across and 32.5 inches tall.

These measurements would allow me to have an even distance between the width of the boxes,  It also takes into account the moulding pieces being 3 inches from the ceiling and top of the baseboard.

Once I mapped it out on my paper, you can also map it out on your wall.  This is more difficult if you have super tall ceilings like us.  Be prepared to grab a large level.  At this point, you’ll be feeling really grateful if you have a laser level.

picture frame molding design plan

Gather Materials & Supplies

You’ll need to do some math in order to know how much base cap moulding to purchase.  Since wood prices have gone up the past few years, I try not to waste much and get just enough for what I need.  At the same time, I like to have a tad extra in case of a measurement or cut mistake.

The base cap we opted to purchase is the Reliabilt 11/16 x 1 ⅜ x 8 ft primed pine base cap molding.  These dimensions are perfect for creating box paneling on both small walls and larger walls.

Add up how much you’ll need by adding how much base cap you’ll need per frame.  From there, simply multiply it by the number of frames you’ll install.

Johnny Miller captured this beautiful living room for Martha Stewart. The framed moulding complements this vintage modern living room perfectly.

Make Your Cuts

Now that you’ve purchased your base cap, you’ll need to grab your power tools and get to work.  Without the right tools, this project can be difficult.  I’d recommend using a double bevel compound sliding miter saw.

If you don’t have a miter saw or want to know what saw to buy, check out my quick guide to miter saws.  If a miter saw isn’t in your budget, I highly recommend you check out either a miter box or miter shears

Grab your tape measure, speed square, and pencil.  Measure out your trim pieces per your own measurements.  Keep in mind that you will be cutting these at 45-degree angles.  You’ll want to measure, mark, and cut your trim work with the longer edge (or thicker side) of the trim piece facing outwards.

picture frame in picture frame molding

If you start with a left sided angle, you’ll cut your first piece at that 45-degree cut. Once you’ve made that cut, move your trim down and your blade 45 degrees to the right.  Now, you’ll do your next cut on your next piece.

Repeat this for all of your vertical pieces and horizontal pieces.  I prefer to do all of my cuts on my horizontal top and bottom boards at once and then begin on my vertical boards next.

I also like to keep these organized as I cut, so I know where they will go and each frame stays as a unit.

This sweet nursery with picture frame molding has a sophisticated feel.

Attach Picture Frame Molding To Wall

Now that you’ve measured and cut your frames, you can begin to assemble your picture frame molding on your walls.

Apply liquid nails or another adhesive to your moulding.  Attach the top piece first, and then the bottom piece.  Next, you can attach your right and left piece on either side to form your frame. If the length does not seem right, you still have time to correct it at this point.

If everything looks good, take your 18 gauge brad nailer and drive those nails into your trim work.  You’ll notice there will be a very small hole from the nail gun.  This is okay! We will pretty it up in a bit!

You’ll repeat these steps for each of your frames.

This gorgeous dining room has elegance written all over it.

Make It Pretty

If you’ve gotten to this point and have noticed that you have some boxes that aren’t quite flush, don’t fret.  With older homes (and newer homes too) you likely won’t have perfectly straight walls.  As a result, you may need to fake it.  You can use extra nails to help bridge the gap between trim work and walls.  If you need to, you can also use caulk to help fill in any gaps.

You’ll want to take a small bead of caulk and caulk around the edges and seams of your boxes.  Next, use wood filler to cover those tiny nail holes.  Once dried, you can lightly sand the areas where you wood filled.  You’ll need to wipe away your dust particles after.  Next, you can prime and paint your picture frame molding on your new feature wall.

Talk about adding drama with picture molding!

10 Back To School Hacks To Stay Organized For Busy Families This School Year

The start of the school year is an exciting time. Perhaps, you’ve been counting down the days to the beginning of school since the end of the year. Or, if this is your child’s first time heading off to school, you and your child may have some nervousness.

Either way, getting the school calendar off to a good start is key for having a smooth year.  You don’t need to be overwhelmed with last minute preparations for a successful school transition.  Instead, take a little bit of time now to prepare to make your new schedule work for you.

With these 10 back to school hacks, you’ll notice a huge difference in the amount of time you end up saving with these simple organizational easy hacks.

1. Hang A Week’s Worth Of  School Clothes

back to school outfit idea

Each Sunday I gather up towels, sheets, and our kids’ clothes, and set about my day to make sure everyone has clean clothes for the entire week.

Once the clothes have been dried, each of my kids sets aside a week’s worth of their school uniforms in this hanging clothes organizer.  Because each space corresponds to a single day this makes getting dressed in the morning a cinch. Granted, my kids have a school uniform, but we’ve continued this routine during the summer and it has been a life saver!

2. Install A Doorbell In Each Room Of Your Home

back to school doorbell hack

If you follow me on TikTok, chances are you’ve seen my doorbell video that I’ve put in my kids’ rooms. This is a great tool for the whole family.  We’ve installed these easy to use doorbells in each of our kids’ rooms.  All you have to do is place the adhesive backing of the doorbell in your kid’s room near their bed.

If you have a nightstand, this would be a great location. If you have high school aged kids who have difficulty waking up, simply ring their doorbell to ensure they keep getting the message. Subsequently, I also use this tool to make sure my big kids know when they are needed to come downstairs, rather than constantly yelling their name.

If the doorbell rings, they need to be down in the kitchen for breakfast to make sure we are out of the door on time for school.  This is a great idea if your kids have difficulty in the morning keeping track of time.

I’ve been asked, “Why don’t we just use Alexa as an intercom?”  For our family, Alexa had easy access to other solutions.  In order to keep Jack from cleverly using Alexa to do his homework, these doorbells are our solution.

If you have a teen kids, you may need to make it into a game titled “Hide The Doorbell.”  Each day your doorbell has a new spot to hide to wake them up to ensure that they get out of bed and out the front door on time.  Plus, this way they can’t unplug it like they can with an Alexa alarm. Surprisingly, you may even start funny pranks with your big kids all over an alarm clock hack.

3.  DIY Morning Bins Filled With Get Ready Essentials

back to school hacks

Do you spend too much time running up and downstairs looking for miscellaneous essential items to get you and your kids ready in the morning? I can’t find the hairbrush. The toothpaste is in the upstairs bathroom but the toothbrush is downstairs. Hair ties are in Goldie’s room and Jack is missing his deodorant. Generally, I’m running all over the house before 7:00 am.

An easy way to save your sanity is by creating these DIY morning bins. You can grab a bin at Dollar Tree or any local Target. Get out your Cricut Joy, Maker, or Air and create a name label for each bin.  From there, keep a set of personal essential items in the bin for easy access to help you save time before your school day.

If you have little kids who thrive on schedules, you can also keep a copy of the morning routine near these bins. This way, each child can independently get themselves ready in the morning and know what step comes next.  Back to school hacks that save time, help foster independence, and start the entire day on a good note are my favorite!

4.  Create A Family Command Center

back to school command center

When school time begins we see an uptick in our calendar.  Suddenly, we have tons of school activities and extracurriculars that are taking over our entire week. Jack, Ave, Walker, and Goldie all have activities almost every single night.

With so many activities it can get overwhelming in a hurry for us as parents.  The best way for our family to manage that chaos and to see when we actually have free time is by implementing our family command center.

The family command center is a calendar for the month that has all of our plans on each day of the week listed out.  We can check at the beginning of the week and plan accordingly.  I try to put on the calendar when I know if someone has a big project due or a spelling test, that way I can spend some extra one-on-one time with them during the week for study time.

You can also have a spot for notes, grocery lists, mail, permission slips, and keys.  If you prefer an electronic calendar, I’d recommend setting it up so that both you and your partner have access as parents.  This will ensure both parents have an idea of what is up next.

5. Make Packing Lunches A Breeze

snack organization

Remember how I said I loved back to school hacks that are time savers, help with independence, and start the day off right?  Well, here is a secret to help continue those positive vibes.

Invest in refrigerator and pantry organizers. For your refrigerator organizers, store cold items that are great for school lunches.  You can meal prep ahead of time and make several different sandwiches for the next few days.  Place the sandwiches in ziploc bags and label each sandwich.  Soon your child will be able to grab what they feel like that morning without even asking.

You can also have a separate bin for dairy, protein, veggies, and fruit. The same can be said for your pantry bins.  You can label each bin with school snacks, grains, and juice boxes. Instruct your child to help pack their own lunch.  If you have a younger child, you can easily create a visual checklist to help them make healthy choices.

6. On The Go Snack Plastic Container For Your Child’s Backpack

boy playing in his room

One of my fondest school experiences is coming home from a long day and scarfing down Ramen noodles. What is it about school that makes you ravenous afterwards? If you know this hunger all too well, then you’ll know that waiting to get home to enjoy a tasty treat is ten minutes too long.

Instead, pack this snack plastic container ahead of time and enjoy your treat before you even walk in the door.  As an added bonus, these snack containers prevent your snacks from being crushed. You can get these in coordinating colors to match your water bottle or lunch box.  We all know that what matters to this school essential item is the snack that is inside.

7.  Turn Your Car Into A Mobile Study Hall

portable homework clipboard for kids

As your children get older chances are they will have more after school activities.  With all of the extracurriculars, we have to make use of our time very wisely.  One way I found to help stay on top of school projects while still being able to have an evening activity is to do homework in the car while waiting and traveling to extracurriculars.

This portable lap desk is the perfect solution.  You have a writing station and place to store important papers and school supplies. Once you get used to using this lap desk you’ll be hooked.

I also swear by these car hooks to help free up space in your car.  Because backpacks can be bulky and take up a lot of room, I need something to help alleviate that space. These car hooks fit over the headrest and use unused vertical space.  As an added bonus, they are within arms reach still for easy access.

Both of these back to school hacks are easy to implement and relatively inexpensive.

8. Create Your Own Homework Station

back to school hacks

DIY projects don’t have to be intimidating.  Sometimes simple is best.  This DIY homework station is one DIY that will make a huge impact with little effort.

If you used this cart in your nursery and still happen to have it laying around, it can have a second life as a homework station.  If you don’t have this cart, you should just add it to your school shopping list now.

Each row can correspond to a name.  Store essential school supplies like crayons, markers, scissors, glue, pens, and pencils in a readily available place.  When I’m shopping our school supply lists, I like to get an extra set of supplies to have on hand for this homework station.

You can also use this cart to help corral library books and other important items like permission slips. While I love all the organization it offers, to me, the best part about this cart is that it is moveable.

You can pull it right up to your kitchen table and each of your kids can easily access any supplies needed and store completed materials.  We still check everyone’s progress in our house, so having a designated spot where we can quickly grab and review is crucial for our family.

9. Stay Organized With A Drop Off Zone

One of my biggest pet peeves is when you walk into my home and trip over shoes, backpacks, and coats that are just thrown on the floor.

I pride myself on being a very organized person, but my kids must take after Sam because they love to challenge their mother.  To help keep your entryway clear of clutter make sure you have a place to hang backpacks, coats, and store shoes.

This colorful mudroom has plenty of storage space for all your essentials.

You’ll want to put this spot close to the door that you primarily use. Regardless, if you come in through the garage door and your drop off zone is near the front door, I can guarantee you that it won’t be used.

If you have the square footage I’d invest in a locker system.  If you have a small entryway or need to adhere to a budget, invest in some wall bins, hooks, and a shoe organizer to help keep your walking paths free from clutter.

These are simple back to school hacks that will not only make your life easier but will also keep you from tripping ten times a night over a rogue sneaker.

10. Store Artwork & Memories

back to school hacks

Each time Jack comes home from school he brings with him a new poster board with fun facts. Ave worked hard to bring home an A+ on her spelling test and Walker’s masterpieces are hilarious.

I can’t bear to throw any of these keepsakes away.  As a result, I end up keeping them all on a table. The artwork started to collect gradually until suddenly, I realized my table was overflowing.

Do yourself a favor and grab yourself these keepsake bins.  You can get one for each of your kids and store all of their school memories.  I have file folders to organize the school year.  For larger artwork, you can grab these large art bags to help store those over the top creations.

If you have a Cricut, you can label each bin with different designs to help tell them apart quickly.

This week, we are painting a few rooms in our home. It got me thinking about how big of an impact paint can make on an entire room. Updating your own home can be as easy as picking out some complementary colors to get a fresh take on your home style.  With coastal decor being a hot trend I wanted to share paint colors for your coastal living room.

12 Best Coastal Living Room Paint Colors For Decorating Your Home

An upcoming paint trend for 2023 gives a nod to a coastal design with its calming vibes and colors. Beach homes will have an edge, as paint color trends towards taking their inspiration from the sea, sky, sun, and earth.

If you’re interested in updating your family room or other areas of your home to have a coastal color palette, I’ll go over my favorite paint colors that will help you have the perfect coastal living room.

Coastal Design Explained

The top paint colors for 2023 contain color combinations that are perfect for coastal decor. You may be asking yourself, what exactly does it mean to have this type of style? This style is described as taking inspiration from natural elements outside near the water and having those elements reflected in your home.

In other words, when looking at a coastal lifestyle, you’ll take inspiration from the ocean waves, sea, sand, sky, marine life, etc.  You’re not only displaying those elements via your color choices, but they can also be inspired through pattern and textures via your decor.

The end result is a soothing backdrop where you can relax, close your eyes, and envision yourself on the beach without stepping outside your home.

pink playroom

While I love the design, I think this is a style that needs to be done carefully.  It can be easy to go over the top and move from a breezy feeling to a tacky beachy feeling. Not to say you can’t use seashells in your decor, but I do believe you need to be cognizant of what you are using to decorate.  If you want that elegant design, consider how you can tell that story without having it slap you in the face with over the top beach trinkets.

Coastal Grandmother – The Hot New Decor Style

One design style that is beginning to trend is known as “coastal grandmother”.  You may be scratching your head and wondering what in the world does this entail?

The easiest way to describe this trend is to envision how your grandmother from Rhode Island would decorate her home.  I personally choose to envision how Jackie Kennedy Onasis would decorate her Nantucket compound should she be alive today.

Hydrangeas are a must for a grandmother’s touch

Coastal grandmother marries the design of taking elements from nature and incorporating vintage pieces to make your home feel warm and cozy.

Your decor should feel light and breezy, but at the same time, you should have items that make you feel that warmth you feel when you walk into your grandmother’s home and smell her making her famous chocolate chip cookies.

This entire house is a great example of the coastal grandmother style.

How To Achieve Your Grandmother’s Beach House Style?

How do you even begin to get this new look? A great starting point is to have a solid foundation with your design elements.  You don’t need to go overboard for this.  This can be as simple as picking coastal paint colors.  You may want a family room with seaglass green or bright whites.

From there, add in natural materials such as wicker baskets. Throw pillows are a great way to help emphasize this decor style.  Blue and white striped pillows or a woven throw blanket with complementary colors can give a nautical feel and can bring warmth to your living space.

Vintage Finds Are Key

Next, you’ll want to add in decor with vintage finds.  Whether you have big or small decor items, make them vintage to help nail this style. A great way to find these items is to search through antique malls or estate sales.   For example,  a light toned antique wood coffee table would be a great pick to incorporate into this design.

The tones from the wood can be reminiscent of driftwood, while the actual style of the table should reflect a vintage feel. You can also look for items with natural fabrics. Linen curtains or linen slipcovers are perfect examples. Vintage rugs are another great way to create the perfect scene for your own coastal grandmother style.

Don’t forget about smaller decor items.  You can look to antique malls for those great vintage finds like blue and white vases, lamps, vintage books, wicker vases, or wall art as ways to help bring the room together. Whatever you do, don’t forget to set out a bouquet of fresh hydrangeas.  These are key in order for you to nail the coastal grandmother style!

And if you’re like me and have a black thumb, grab some faux hydrangea and add some water to the vase. It’s one of my favorite hacks!

Modern Beach House Living

If the coastal grandmother style sounds like it may be too much for your taste, then you’re in luck.  Another popular trend is the modern coastal style. Rather than taking vintage finds to create warmth, this design style is much more minimalistic.

You’ll still utilize the key concept of using elements of nature and incorporating those elements into your living space.  However, modern coastal design is about creating your living space with the notion that less is more.  You’re looking at simple, clean lines with your decor that says coastal without screaming it.

In other words, hide your nautical ropes, seashells, and anchors.  Instead, look to natural materials, textures, colors, and patterns that have inspiration from the sea.

Finding Inspiration In Nature

Woven jute rugs are a great example of taking inspiration from the sea.  The texture of the jute adds warmth to your space and is reminiscent of a sandy beach with its neutral color.  You can look at wicker baskets to help organize clutter and also capture the same feeling as your jute rug.

For furniture, look to woods that are light or painted white, but keep your lines straight.  You’ll want to have a light and airy feeling without being too dark or heavy for the space.  If you prefer a darker toned wood, a driftwood gray would be a good compromise as it can be reminiscent of ocean waves.

Linen textiles are another great way to complement your great room.  It not only brings in natural fabrics, but this fabric adds a light and breezy feeling when used in this space.  Plants are another easy way to create texture and to capture your decor.

You don’t necessarily have to have your typical dark green plants.  Instead, opt for pampas grass.  Pampas have a texture that is reminiscent of ocean waves with soft colors that range from sandy dunes to vibrant sunsets.  You can put them in a large vase and place them on a coffee table or your built in cabinets.

Achieving More With Less

Keep in mind that with this style that less is more.  You don’t want to go overboard on any design piece.  Rather, each item should have a purpose.  You’re not looking at collecting items that tell a story.

Instead, you want every item to be in their proper place and nothing more.  At the same time, you don’t want to use any decor that throws it in your face that you are trying to achieve a design reminiscent of the sea. Look for ways to incorporate your theme without using items that scream it.

For example, instead of hanging up a picture of a beach, look at abstract art that uses colors and lines that are reminiscent of the ocean water.  Avoid loud starfish and seashell patterns and opt for a simple nautical stripe pattern.

You can keep your seashells for the beach and incorporate sea glass via vases or decorative bowls. A capiz shell mirror or light fixture are another way to help incorporate those natural elements without being too obvious.

Keep It Simple With A Coastal Color Palette: Breaking Down Your Paint Color

No matter what style you choose, the first thing you need to do is make sure you have colors that are inspired by nature.  Instead of one singular color, a coastal color palette consists of several complementary colors that can be used throughout your entire home and in your decor.

Coastal palettes consist of colors that take their inspiration from the sea, sky, sand, and sun. Several of these colors are predicted to be a top interior wall color for 2023.

Blue

Blue hues are a favorite color for many reasons, but one of those reasons is simply due to science.  Blue is not only soothing and proven to help lower stress and anxiety, but it also is the easiest color to see. Because of this, blue can help a space with lots of light feel larger by reflecting light or help a darker room feel brighter by drawing color and light from the room.

Blue walls can range from different vibrant hues to more subtle gray blues. Navy, turquoise, sea foam green, and beach glass are all examples of beachy blues inspired by the ocean.

Ranging from a darker solid color with navy to a bright accent color in turquoise, these are great options to help elevate your theme.  Sea glass and seafoam green have more green-blue tints with a lighter color in comparison to a typical navy or turquoise blue.

While you can use these beach colors on your interior walls, you don’t necessarily have to go quite as bold.  You can still opt to have one or two as a room color but use it within your textiles and decor rather than your paint color.

The light blue walls add a calming background while the white accents reflect lots of light in this living room.

White & Other Neutrals

If you prefer a more neutral wall color, white walls or a warm gray are great options that still help communicate your design without going quite as bold.  Again, you can incorporate that beach color scheme into your decor while still having a white or neutral backdrop.  Whites, grays, and beiges are colors that range from the ocean white caps to the shelly beaches.

You can incorporate those beige and white tones not only on your interior walls but also within your furniture.  Neutral paint colors paired with natural elements bring your theme to life.  Think of bright white paint on your interior walls paired with light wooden floors and light or white toned wood furniture.

To offset all of the neutrals and white, incorporate a contrasting piece of color.  A great example of this is black painted window frames or black framed decor. The black pops against the stark white color.

Sunrise Sunset

If you’ve ever spent an early morning or late evening at the beach, then chances are you’ve seen a spectacular sunrise or sunset.  When Sam and I graduated from college, we moved to Destin and got to see some amazing sunsets.

Terracotas, light pinks, and mustard yellows are just some of the colors we’d see. These colors happen to be predicted top trends for 2023 interior paint colors. No matter the time of day, you can bring those colors alive by incorporating them into your home.

Whether you want to include them in your family room via an interior wall or save it for a small space such as a laundry room, these vibrant colors are surely going to bring your home to life.

The 20 Best Curtain Ideas For Living Room Modern Designs

A  great way to change your room’s appearance is to update and change out the textiles you use.  Living room curtains can easily be updated and changed out with minimum effort.

As an added bonus, the right drapery can make your space feel completely new.  Are you are on the hunt for living room curtain ideas? I’ll go over how to pick the best curtains and how you can use them to elevate your living room design. Lastly, I’ll go over the 20 best curtain ideas for living room modern designs to incorporate into your own home.

The Importance Of New Curtains

Before we get to the actual curtains, lets talk about the importance of them. Curtains serve many purposes other than being a part of your design style.  Fortunately, curtain design has come a long way since I was a young kid.

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s you may remember your mom or grandma’s window treatments that matched your wallpaper.  That means, you likely had curtains with lots of floral patterns and ruffles.  Fortunately, curtain designs have modernized.

I love the traditional style with contemporary touches in this sophisticated living room. Notice the modern sheer curtains with the traditional tassel pullback.

Highlight Architectural Features & Create a Focal Point

Curtains aren’t just a design statement.  Rather, they can enhance your home’s architectural style.  Large windows, high ceilings, and arched window frames are great examples of architectural features that you’d want to highlight rather than cover up with floral prints and ruffled fabric.

Instead, opt to enhance those features by choosing the correct curtains.  Not only can you highlight architectural features with curtains, but curtains can also help frame your focal point in your living space.

If you have a smaller area, curtains are a great choice to help the small space feel larger.  By hanging the curtains wider than the windows, you’ll give the appearance of tall windows and can serve as a focal point.

There is tons of natural light that pours into this traditional living room.  The ceiling hung curtains help make the space feel even brighter.

Enhance Your Design With A Complementary Color Scheme

Similarly to highlighting architectural features, curtains can also enhance your living room’s color scheme. Whether you opt to have a more neutral color palette or opt for bright colors, the color of the curtains can make the whole area pop.

Ultimately, your style preference will dictate whether you opt for a dramatic look with dark colors and heavier fabrics or a classic style with white sheer curtains for a clean look and airy feel.

This mid-century modern living room is a great example of using an alternative to curtains that still ties it all together, allows for natural sunlight, and provides texture to the space. Blinds can be just as impactful with similar benefits.

A Great Way to Provide Privacy

The other benefit of curtains is that they can provide some privacy.  If you live in an area where your home is close to other homes, then chances are you’ve walked past your neighbor’s house and have seen what they’re watching on television that night.

If you prefer to have more privacy, then curtains are an excellent choice to maintain that privacy.  Of course, if you prefer to have your curtains open to allow direct sunlight into your living room you are able to do that while still being able to close them at night time for total privacy.

These budget friendly curtains were actually made from sheets to provide privacy and to block out the sun from the sunroom in this living room. I love that this cozy living room repurposed fabric that was already on hand.

Provides Insulation

When you live in an older home, you get pretty crafty when it comes to finding solutions to help with temperature regulation.  Often, older homes don’t have dual zone HVAC systems.  As a result, in the summer months, the upstairs area can be extremely warm, while your basement or main living space can be downright chilly.

This not only can be a major pain but it also isn’t great when it comes to saving energy.  To help combat the heat in the summer months, we rely on our curtains and roman shades.  High quality curtains can help absorb the heat from the sun, and keep your home cooler by blocking out the sun’s rays.

Keeping your curtains shut in your upstairs bedrooms will make the space feel much cooler.  If you happen to need any other tips to help cool down this summer, check out my 5 tips for keeping your house cool in the summer. On the flip side, in the colder months, this is another good option to help keep your space toastier.  Curtains can help absorb any drafts coming from your living room window by insulating around the window frame.

These sheer drapes not only provide an airy feel to this coastal living room, but they also perfectly frame the set of windows for a great focal point without distracting with a bold color or pattern.

How to Pick The Correct Curtains

Before I share with you the 20 best curtain ideas for living room modern designs, you’ll need to keep in mind a few considerations before buying your own.

Buy The Correct Size

It is key that you buy the correct size curtains for your living area otherwise your space may feel overly cramped or you may miss out on enhancing those tall ceilings. This means you’ll need to look at both the length and width of your entire window space.

Length & Width Are Key

Standard curtain lengths come in the following sizes: 63 inches, 84 inches, 94 inches, 108 inches, and 120 inches.  Of course you can always get custom made lengths, but these are the lengths you’ll typically find available and ready to ship.

The length you pick will be dependent on where you hang your curtain rod. Generally, you should measure from the floor to about 4 inches above the top of your window frame.  If you hang the curtain rod too low, you’ll have a window that appears overly short and narrow.

Windows provide lots of sunlight, so highlighting the amount of natural light your room gets is to your advantage. You can always hang your curtain rod a few inches from the ceiling to elongate your ceilings and create a luxurious feel to your space with full-length curtains.

Floor length heavier curtains provide this conversation room with an elegant feel.

Once you’ve determined the length of your curtains, make sure you don’t forget about the width.  The width is just as important as the length and will help provide that privacy or temperature regulation.

Measure along the width of your window frame and multiply that number by 1.5 (all the way up to 3).  Depending on how full you want your curtains to hang, you may opt to get fuller looking curtains.

Curtains that are higher and fuller tend to give off a dramatic and luxurious look. At the same time, you don’t want the curtains to swallow your space entirely.  You’ll need to balance these measurements with how large or small your living space is in comparison to the overall look you wish to achieve.

Curtains don’t have to be plain white.  In this living room, these dark velvet curtains are the perfect addition and complement other textiles.

Fabric Choices Matter

The type of fabric you choose for your curtains will be dependent on a number of factors.  First, how much light are you getting throughout the day and how much light do you prefer?  Depending on the room, you may want more or less light.

Light Filtering

For example, a bedroom where you will be sleeping you’ll want to look at curtains that block out a lot of sunlight.  Blackout curtains are popular in bedrooms and nurseries.  On the other hand, having blackout shades in a living room is not ideal as you block out all the natural sunlight.  For a living room, you’ll likely want to have curtains that filter little to moderate light, depending on your geographic location.

This bay window has curtains that are light and airy while enhancing the beautiful architecture in this space.

Consider Thickness Of Material

Additionally, consider the amount of insulation the curtains can hold to help regulate temperatures.  Again, in bedrooms, blackout curtains will help regulate the temperature in the bedroom by blocking out the sun and absorbing the heat.

These are great in the summer months and areas that experience warmer climates.  On the other hand, if you live in a climate with colder weather, you may opt to have curtains that have some weight to them to help provide some insulation during those colder seasons.

Care Instructions Are Key

You may also want to pay attention to the instructions on how to care for your curtains.  If you have kids and pets, picking a curtain fabric that is machine washable is key.  I’ve seen way too many potty training incidents where curtains have gotten ruined in the process.  If you have older kids and aren’t concerned with the care instructions, then you’ll be able to pick from a wide variety of fabrics.

Consider Your Aesthetics

Lastly, keep in mind that certain fabrics can enhance different aesthetics.  For example, velvet and silk curtains give a general luxurious and elegant feel, while cotton or linen is much more subtle.  Ask yourself whether you intend to have your space feel light and airy or dramatic and regal?

These linen curtains not only frame the fireplace, but also do a great job complementing the blinds for added texture.

Pros & Cons Of Popular Materials

Cotton and polyester curtains are both easy to clean and come in a wide range of different colors, different patterns, and a variety of styles.  You can get different weights of these fabrics that range from sheer drapes to more heavier fabrics.

Sheer fabric allows you to keep the area filled with natural light.  This helps with the appearance of it looking large and open and is popular among a more modern style. Linen curtains are also popular among sheer panels that provide a traditional style with lots of light filtering throughout.

However, linen curtains are prone to wrinkling and are not machine washable. These are a great option for a coastal design style, but if you have pets or kids, you may want to opt for cotton. Velvet and fleeze are heavier fabrics that can help block out light, noise, and aid in temperature regulation.

However, both are more difficult to clean.  On the other hand, they can transform your space into an elegant and luxurious setting.  If you are going for opulence,  one of these options would be the perfect choice.

These curtains are the perfect weight for this living space. They are a heavier fabric in a light shade of blue to keep a light and airy appearance.

Play Up Your Color & Patterns

There are different types of curtains that range from more neutral colors to vibrant colors with busy patterns.  Your personal preference will dictate what you decide to ultimately choose to hang in your living room.  Ultimately, colors and patterns can help enhance your living room’s theme and provide texture.

Neutral Settings

Consider neutral spaces that opt to have colors that are muted and similar to the furnishings, decor, and textiles.  You can pick white curtains in a living room with the same wall color for a seamless transition.  When you choose the same color of curtains as your living space, you create a timeless look that allows your eyes to easily transition from one space to the next.

Colorful Settings

If you prefer to have a pop of color, try picking contrasting colors between your wall color and living room drapes for a modern look. The vibrant colors can tie in with other textiles in your living room and can enhance your living room’s aesthetics.

These arched windows and tall ceilings are pure perfection and the black and white palette really lets them speak for themselves.

Creating Texture

I also love that you can use patterned curtains to create texture.  Consider that neutral space again. If you prefer, you can create texture with a patterned curtain in that same neutral color, but the pattern draws your eyes upwards and outwards to create texture.

A pattern also allows light to bounce off the varying textures to create even more light.  For darker spaces, a pattern is a great way to soften the space without making it feel small or cramped.

Again, patterns create texture which can help bring more light into your living space.  Don’t underestimate the importance of the texture of your curtains.  If you prefer to have solid curtains, you can still create that texture by installing blinds with varying textures.

This earthy toned living room has a great use of curtains and blinds for added texture.

Learn How To Style Your Own Modern Living Room Curtains

Now that we’ve looked at the 20 best curtain ideas for living room modern designs, and hopefully picked a favorite option out,  let’s take a look at some of my favorites.

A Timeless Look

These arched windows are such a fun architectural feature that you can’t help but to highlight them.  The white full-length drapes are hung perfectly to help highlight the arched curve of the window frame.

You’ll also notice that the curtains blend in seamlessly with the paint on the walls.  There is plenty of light pouring in with curtains that accentuate the modern black curved window frames for a breathtaking focal point.

Make A Bold Statement

This sunroom designed by Martha Mulholland is a great example of how bold patterns can create texture without being overly distracting.  I love that the curtains aren’t your typical white sheers and instead have a dark charcoal pattern.

The sunroom has a large wall of windows that showcases an amazing view to the backyard.  At times, however, privacy is needed and the ability to cover those windows is key.  The fabric roman-like shades were a great option to hang to still allow that natural sunlight while still providing a way to have privacy.

Light & Airy

When you have a smaller living space it is important that you maximize as much natural sunlight as possible to create an area that appears more open and brighter.  This small living room is a great example of how you can create a living room that is both cozy yet spacious.

The use of neutral colors and light curtains allows plenty of natural light to open the space up. The curtains aren’t overly heavy and don’t weigh the space down, but instead, allow natural light to pour through the windows and perfectly frame the large window

Full-Length Drapes

Not only does Pure Salt Interiors knock it out of the park with this space, but they also manage to make an already large living room feel even larger.  The full length drapes hung from floor to ceiling make the wall of glass doors feel even larger.

Any other curtain length would be out of place here.  They kept the curtains neutral to blend with the neutral color palate and to allow the natural light to shine!

Add A Pop of Color

These navy blue curtains are the perfect color to complement this eclectic living room designed by Style By Emily Henderson. In an overall neutral setting, the blue curtains draw you in and provide that warmth to cozy up the space.

The curtains are also heavier but not so heavy that they are overpowering. Lastly, you’ll notice that the curtains complement other textiles that can be found throughout the home.

An Elegant & Dramatic Appearance

While I love a more light and airy living room, there is something spectacular about a modern vintage home that screams drama.  If you love historical homes as much as I do, you’ll love looking at this modern Victorian that is filled with character.

This living room is very blue indeed and is complete with blue velvet curtains.  The curtains, while heavy, still allow plenty of natural light into this dark living space.  What I love about velvet is it elevates your space to feel luxurious and elegant.

9 Area Rugs For Your Home: Modern Rugs for Living Room Spaces

As I begin transforming a new room in my home, I always like to start with a piece of decor that sparks interest.  Oftentimes, that piece is a great rug.  Picking out an area rug can be super intimidating.

From knowing the right size to picking from a variety of styles and materials; the right rug can be challenging to narrow down, but will make a big impact in your living space.  If you are interested in changing out your living room decor, the easiest way to give your space a new look is by investing in a new living room area rug.

I’ll go over what you need to know before buying that perfect modern rug and give you a look at some of my favorite contemporary rugs that range from bright colors with intricate patterns to a more neutral color with natural materials. Whatever your decorating style, you’ll find a great option that will breathe new life into your living room. I’ll share with you my top 9 modern rugs for living room spaces that will elevate your home’s decor.

modern rugs for living room

If you talk to anyone with a background in interior design they will tell you that living room area rugs are a must.  Not only do rugs anchor your room, but they often add depth and texture to a large space.

Deciding on a new rug can be challenging.  You need to pick out the right sized area rug, but you will also need to decide on the rug pattern, type of materials, style, and color.  All of this must be done while making sure it is within an affordable price range.

This may seem like a daunting task, but let’s break down some key considerations before you bring home a new area rug that you ultimately regret.

Things to Know Before You Buy A New Rug

Before you run to HomeGoods or shop online to peruse modern rugs, you’ll want to make sure that you know exactly what you need.

Rug Size

There is such a thing as a rug that is poorly fitted to your living space. A rug that is too small will make the room look unfinished and the furniture out of place.  On the other hand, if your rug is too large for the space, your room can feel cramped.

You do have some leeway in regards to your rug’s size, but you need to know just how much leeway.  Before you begin your search, you’ll want to measure the room where your rug will live.  Take into account any natural pathways you’ll want for walking to and from the room.

modern area rug under coffee table

In your living room, you’ll want a rug that will cover at least the length and width of your furniture.  You should have 4 to 8 inches of uncovered floor that borders your rug for any heavy traffic.   You’ll also want to keep in mind how you want to arrange your furniture.  If you want a more open seating area, then a larger sized area rug can be accommodated with your furniture placed around the border.

If your couch is on the wall, make sure you have at least the front legs placed on the accent rug. On the other hand, if you want a more intimate setting then consider placing your furniture on a smaller area rug ranging from 5×8 or 6×9 with floating furniture.

organic neutral living room

Rugs can come in many different sizes, but the most popular sized rugs for your living room are on the larger side and include 6×9, 8×10, 9×12, and 10×14.  If you are unsure of how the rug will look in your space, an easy way to find out is to use painter’s tape to outline the rug in your room.

From there, you can see how the size, shape, and layout can affect your living room.  The right area rug is out there, you just have to first decide on its size.

Consider your Lifestyle To Match Your Living Room Area Rug

Now that you have an idea of size, you’ll want to narrow your focus a bit to find the best rugs for your lifestyle. Not all area rugs are ideal for the same people.  For instance, if you have pets or children, you’ll need to spend some extra time taking into account the type of materials used as well as cleaning instructions.

With four kids, I need rugs that are durable and can handle a high-traffic area. On top of that, I also need rugs that have easy care instructions that don’t require any professional cleaning services and can withstand our Bernedoodle, Penny.

Accidents can happen and if I have to take my rugs to get professionally cleaned each time a kid or dog spilled something then I would never have a rug in our living room.  Materials matter and the type of material you pick will directly impact how well it can be cleaned up, how durable it is, as well as how it feels on your bare feet.

Materials Matter In A Rug

Rugs range from plant based materials to natural fibers to synthetic materials. All of these materials have pros and cons.  Depending on your lifestyle and what you want in a rug, you’ll be drawn to one material over the others.  Here is a quick breakdown of the different materials.

Cotton

Cotton is a plant based natural material that is common with coastal decor.  It has a flat weave that does not add much in terms of texture or depth.  On the plus side, it can be machine washable- but beware it will shrink!  This is not necessarily the rug for you if you want something that is warm and fuzzy under your toes.

Jute

Natural rugs have been taking over the home design scene for quite some time.  These are generally created from jute or sisal.  The neutral design adds texture and depth to a room without any vibrant colors or bold patterns.

You do have to be careful with these rugs as you can only spot clean them.  If you have kids or dogs, these rugs may look great but you’ll have a hard time cleaning them. If you are still dead set on a jute rug, consider laying another rug over your jute area rug. This way, you can still have that desired look, but you’ll also have a large surface area protected by another material.

This guest room-office makeover uses a jute rug and warm green paint to add depth to a small space.

Wool

Wool is natural fiber that gives you that soft and cozy feel. While it is durable, it is not necessarily a budget rug.  Additionally, you’ll also have to have this material professionally cleaned. In my opinion, these rugs look great, but the maintenance can be a bit of a pain.  For those of you with kids and animals, it is a big risk having a more expensive rug that is difficult to clean.

Also, if you have allergy sufferers in your family, wool itself can be a trigger for those. It can also hold on to allergens more easily than other materials.

Synthetics

While I love the look of natural materials, from a practicality standpoint synthetic fiber rugs are more desirable for our family’s lifestyle.  Nylon and Polyester rugs are easily cleaned, durable, and come in a ton of different patterns, rich colors, and unique looks.

These are a popular choice simply because you can get a durable rug for a high traffic area like your living room for a great price.  You have a wide selection to pick from with tons of different designs.

You may also want to consider an indoor outdoor rug option.  Generally, indoor-outdoor rugs are created from acrylics or polypropylene.  These rugs have come a long way and are often difficult to distinguish from strictly indoor rugs.  You have the added benefit of durability and easy clean up.  Simply take your rug outside and power wash it for a quick clean.

On the other hand, you won’t have that nice cozy feel you would with a high pile.  If you have young kids, this may be a great option until they get old enough to refrain from destruction.

Consider Your Aesthetics For A Modern Rug In Your Living Room

Once you’ve decided on more practical matters like materials and size, then you can have fun with the design.  Consider the colors already in your living room.  Your color scheme will help narrow down your choices.

Your rugs should complement your living room from your furniture to your drapes to your throw pillows and to your decor.  If you have solid color furniture, you have more room to go for bolder patterns and designs. Geometric patterns or floral designs add texture and accent colors in an already neutral setting.

Rich colors add warmth and luxury, while more neutral tones can make the room feel larger and brighter. On the other hand, if you have patterned furniture, you’ll want to stick to more traditional designs and a neutral color palette.

You don’t want multiple pieces to compete for attention.  Pick one focal point and stick to it.  From there you should simply complement the focal point adding accent colors throughout the room.

modern living room

Ultimately, the design and style of your rugs comes down to your personal preference.  If you tend to move towards a more traditional style, an oriental rug or jute area rug are great options.  For more contemporary rug designs, you’ll want to look for different shapes, geometric designs, coastal, or farmhouse inspiration.  Neutral and natural rugs look beautiful in any setting whether that is in your dining room, living room, or bedroom.

Boho inspired designs are popular right now and can be easily achieved with a Moroccan rug, southwest rug, or even rug layering.  Whether you pick a contemporary design or a traditional style rug, the best area rugs are picked with your family’s lifestyle and your own personal preference in mind.

A Pop Of Color For Your Family Room Area Rug

While I tend to gravitate towards more neutral colors, I understand that other people may love more color. This boho inspired home has the perfect mixture of neutral tones with pops of bright colors that are used to accent the room and provide a modern vibe.

A Neutral Rug

Pure Salt Interiors is the brain-child behind this large and airy living room.  The neutral colors enhance the living room’s floor to ceiling windows which stream the room full of light.

The rug, while neutral, has a subtle hint of color that pairs perfectly with the throw pillows on the couch.  The whole living room is a seamless transition to the rest of this beautiful house. I love that this rug ties in so nicely with the modern coastal decor and brings the whole space together.

You would never expect that this living room is in a smaller home. The minimalist design, high arched ceilings, and natural elements create a space that is full of light and character. With the jute rug adding texture, it perfectly complements this neutral space. Take notes of this technique to maximize your architectural features and nail your design.

Floral Designs

The beautiful floral patterns on this rug are paired perfectly with every detail in this living room.  From the greens in the rug to match the couch, the earthy tones which match the coffee table and leather chair, to all of the greenery sprinkled throughout the room- this is sheer perfection. I love the cozy and warm atmosphere the colors and rug create. This would be a great reading space or place to take a nap.

Geometric Designs

Studio McGee always hits it out of the park.  This rug perfectly defines this living space.  The open floor plan allows for the furniture to frame the outside edges of the rug, yet still allows for an intimate setting for conversation.  The geometric design and neutral palette complements the earthy elements in this home.

Layering

Layering rugs is a great way to achieve different textures and adds depth to a living room. In this living room by Park & Oak, the natural jute rug is further enhanced by the smaller hide rug that is layered which accentuates the coffee table.  The hide rug complements the leather pouf and leather throw pillows perfectly. These area rugs are starkly different, yet complement one another for a cohesive and modern room.

Boho Inspired

This boho inspired living room not only showcases a rug that adds amazing texture to the living room, but also is another great example of layering.  You’ll notice that the furniture is floating around the larger jute rug with the smaller boho rug anchoring the larger furniture pieces. The combination of these rugs really adds an extra layer of warmth and coziness to this living room.

Whether you are ready for a DIY or plan on hiring out a renovation, this post will help you be ready to go.

The Best Shower Wall Material Ideas: 6 Options To Transform Your Bathroom

Bathroom renovations are a project that I prefer to have a professional help navigate due to potential plumbing challenges.  That’s not to say that you can’t do some of the projects yourself, but it is always a good idea to have help in areas that are needed.

While I’m comfortable deciding on a bathroom design, I prefer to have help when it comes to installing a new shower. If you are in the process of renovating your bathroom and are looking for the best material for your shower walls, then you are in the right place.  I’ll go over some popular materials for your shower walls that are both functional and will give you a fresh look.

Half of the bathrooms in our historic home have been completed.  The other half are still in rough, but working, shape. They are in need of a complete overhaul, and I could not be more excited.  The remaining small bathrooms need to have materials used that are kid resistant. At the same time, I love a seamless look that will withstand the test of time.

Tips To Design Your Bathroom Shower

I’ve been taking the time to plan out the perfect bathroom for my kids.  Since our bathrooms are on the smaller end, I need to be extremely intentional in how this space functions. At the same time, I also need to have low maintenance shower wall materials that can withstand my young kids. Designing your bathroom is key to getting a space that not only fits your home’s aesthetic, but also fits your family’s needs.

Size and Layout Of Your Bathroom

You’ll want to decide on the layout of the bathroom based on your bathroom’s size and the needs of your family.  If you already have the plumbing in your existing bathroom, you may want to consider keeping the layout the same to avoid further headache and costs associated with moving plumbing behind the walls.

However, if you need a complete overhaul and prefer to change the layout, then do what works for your space. You’ll need to consider the size of the shower with the size and layout of the entire bathroom.

Additionally, the stall needs to fit in the space, along with your vanity and toilet.  If you get one that is too big, the doors may make it difficult to open without running into walls or doors.  You can, however, get creative in smaller spaces to make it functional without damaging your walls or feeling tight on space.

Considerations For Bathroom Layouts

There are several different shower sizes, and you can decide whether you want one with a door or no door.  For an elegant look, glass shower enclosures bring in lots of natural light. If you are tight on space, having no doors can be an easy solution.

Perhaps you prefer a space that is open and the floor is flush with the bathroom floor. Showers that are open and level provide a seamless look from the bathroom to your shower space and are more easily accessible. You could prefer to have a floor that has a lip or curve to it so you have to take a small step up.

These showers are much easier to contain your water and limit accidental falls. If you have kids or are considering the appeal to future homebuyers, you may want a shower tub combination.  My kids will be on the older side when we perform this renovation, so a tub is not necessarily a must have in our bathroom.  This will save us room that we can use for a bigger shower space or double vanity.

Shower Wall Materials Matter

You do want to be intentional in the materials that you use in your bathroom.  Kids can be hard on their spaces, and you’ll want to pick something that is resistant to their antics.

Ideally, materials that are low maintenance, resistant to chipping, and functional are the best option when it comes to picking out bathroom materials.  Your shower walls will especially benefit from durable materials as they take on soap scum and hard water build-up.

What a super fun tiled wall that serves as a great focal point for this master bathroom.

At the same time, you’ll need to pair the functionality of the materials you pick with your desired aesthetic and budget.  Expensive materials may look incredible, but they do require more maintenance and a hefty price tag.

A low-cost option may be more budget friendly, but may not give you the look you want.  The best solution is to find a material that works with your budget, theme, and family’s lifestyle.

Shower Wall Material Ideas: 6 Options To Transform Your Bathroom

There are tons of options for shower wall material ideas when it comes to picking out your preferred materials. Let’s go over a few of my favorite bathroom wall materials and the pros and cons associated with each.

Fiberglass Shower Walls

If you are looking for a material that is low maintenance and low budget, then fiberglass is a great option. Fiberglass panels are a one-piece unit that typically don’t require any cutting or grout lines.

It is common to only see these walls in whites or creams and they come with a glossy finish.  Fiberglass walls are commonly available in model home sites as the cost of installation is low and labor is easy.

While the cost is low, fiberglass panels do not stand up to wear well.  With proper maintenance your fiberglass shower can last, but improper maintenance can cause damage.

Overall, it doesn’t last as long as other materials and in the end can result in a complete replacement.  Fiberglass panels are difficult to repair if it gets a chip or crack, and the cost can be just as much as more expensive surfaces once all is said and done.

If you want the look of tile with a fiberglass shower, this DIY can give you all the details.

Acrylic Shower Wall Panels

Like fiberglass, acrylic walls are extremely budget friendly and easy to install. Acrylic shower panels are a popular choice to place in the home. Unlike fiberglass, acrylic panels can come in different colors and styles and are often made to look like natural stone or traditional tiles.  Maintenance is easy and because the material is non-porous, it is resistant to any mold or mildew.

One downside of the acrylic look is that in terms of durability, it is similar to fiberglass panels.  Should it have a scratch, it is not easy to repair and will result in a replacement.

If you are interested in this modern acrylic shower, this UK based company sells acrylic panels.

Glass Shower Walls

Glass tiles are a great option for an aesthetically pleasing shower.  They reflect light which makes your bathroom brighter and can give the appearance of a larger space. Additionally, you aren’t limited on colors or designs.

You can create some beautiful mosaic designs for an accent wall which will add texture and a focal point for your bathroom walls.  For a more modern and unique look, choose a matte tile that will still reflect light but add a more dramatic feel to your space.

Glass is extremely durable and is not prone to staining. It can get a chip or crack, but the good news is that you can generally replace each individual tile fairly easily.  Maintenance is also fairly easy as you just need to use proper glass cleaner to wipe away any soapy water build up.

While it is durable, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to maintain, it is not cheap.  It is definitely a more expensive option.  Depending on the design and ideal look you want, you’ll be paying a hefty price tag for those bathroom tiles.

It is also labor intensive in terms of installation.  If you don’t have the proper tools or a skilled hand at cutting and installing tile, I’d highly recommend a professional.

This shouldn’t need to be said, but I feel the need to warn you that glass tile is only intended as wall tiles. You should never use them as floor tiles.  They should never be walked upon. Think about how your feet would feel should you step on a broken piece.  Unfortunately, I’ve seen many home DIYers make this mistake.

Green Glass Tile Shower

Who wouldn’t love this green tiled wall?

Ceramic Tiles

If you love the look of glass tiles but aren’t able to afford the price tag, then ceramic tiles are a good alternative.

Ceramic tiles come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, and still have the same reflective properties as glass.  Your bathroom space and shower can appear larger with all of the light reflected from the tiles.

I love how you can create a different design by simply changing out the shape, color, size, and arrangement of these bathroom tiles. For a classic design, subway tile is always a great option, but if you want a more contemporary design, opt for a bold color or pattern.

ceramic tile in black and white bathroom

A modern and dark moody bathroom reveal.

Ceramic tile is also extremely durable and can last for years with the proper maintenance.  The only downside is that you will need to make sure your tiles have been properly sealed and that you take care of the grout.

However, like glass tiles, ceramic tiles can be easily replaced should any damage occur.  Unlike glass, ceramic tile can be used on your floors, walls, and showers.  If you have a lot of square feet to cover, then ceramic tile would be a good option to keep costs manageable, while still getting the same aesthetic you would get with glass tile.

Marble Bathroom Wall

Who doesn’t love the look of marble tiles? It seems that white marble has been having its moment in the home decor scene and for good reason. It is sleek yet the veining you see throughout is unique and individualized.  I’ve recently seen many bathrooms being completed in marble tiles. From marble tile floors to marble shower slabs, this stone is having its time to shine.  For those who love the look, they are able to see past the disadvantages of marble in a bathroom.

Marble is more expensive and is definitely not kid friendly.  It is a porous material, so you’ll need to reseal it often.  It is also extremely soft and can get damage to it easily.  Kids love to bang toys on the floor and walls, and not to mention they aren’t the neatest when it comes to using the bathroom.  Marble does not mix well with acids and a potty training toddler could do some serious damage to marble floors.

Marble shower wall in neutral bathroom

This bathroom is full of white marble between the floors, vanities, and shower.

I have seen marble shower walls, however, because it is in the shower, you risk your marble turning different colors due to its reaction with water and minerals.  The minerals react with the water on the marble and can turn rust colored, green, brown, or yellow.

If you are set on a certain marble, you’ll want to test its reaction with your water to see how it reacts.  You can buy a sample of the marble and immerse it in water for a few days.  Let it dry naturally to see if your marble is prone to color changes. This is another reason why properly sealing your marble is so important.

Other Natural Material Options

Marble isn’t the only natural material that is commonly used in bathrooms.  Natural stone tiles ranging from granite, to limestone, and to slate can also be used in bathrooms.  Stone tiles and stone slabs provide an elegant and sophisticated look, however, many people tend to shy away from these materials as they require a lot of maintenance.

black slate shower wall

This slate shower wall makes a dramatic statement.

Limestone and slate provide a dramatic contemporary look to your bathroom.  It  is not uncommon to see these types of stones on shower wall panels or used in shower flooring.  Keep in mind that you will be paying more for these stone materials.  In larger bathrooms, the price tag will be steep.

Granite is another option that is not just for kitchens.  Granite is more forgiving than marble and is less high maintenance when it comes to cleaning and sealing.

With proper maintenance and sealing, your stone can last for a long time.  You’ll need to check that you are using proper cleaning materials as certain ingredients can affect the durability of natural stone.

Natural Stone shower wall in rustic bathroom

This cabin’s rustic bathroom uses natural stone to complement the home’s aesthetics.

I hope this post gave you some helpful ideas on how to pick out some great options for shower wall materials.  Keep in mind your family’s needs and what you want in your bathroom.  You may want a material that is maintenance free but has more options for different colors and styles.

Or, perhaps you love the look of stone, and don’t mind the required sealing.  Whatever you decide you can have the bathroom of your dreams and know that you made the best choice for your family.

Lots of the items below helped me to do this, and I hope they help your family create some systems that make summer less chaotic and more enjoyable for everyone!

Best Paint Finish For Dining Room

Are you ready to change up the look of your dining room in your home? My personal favorite way to make a big impact on a room is to simply swap out the color of your paint in your living space.  Today we are going to discuss the best paint finish for dining room walls!

Best Paint Finish for Dining Room Walls

I love how a fresh coat of paint can make an entire room feel and look so different.  Before you make any brush strokes on those interior walls, you’ll need to decide on more than just the right color.  The type of paint finish you choose is key to determining how satisfied you are with the end result.

Home decor, DIY projects, and organization hacks may be my niche, but my house is always a work in progress.  These days it seems like I constantly have multiple projects going on in different spaces.

Between our kids’ rooms to my home office, I’ve been able to complete a lot of projects on our to-do list.  But let me fill you in on a tiny secret.  While we completed our dining room last fall, it is still a work in progress! I recently purchased a new dining table and with that table, I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not I plan on painting the space.

Currently, our dining room is Valspar Du Jour.  This is a bright white and ties in nicely with our living room and kitchen.  I was worried that this would be too much white, but with the warm colors from our rug and the contrast from the curtains, I felt like this was the best choice at the time.

I like to describe my style as modern vintage. With that in mind, I like to have clean lines without the clutter.  I also love to highlight our historic home by bringing in decor with antique items from the time period that our home was built.

Since I am switching out our dining table, I want to make sure that the room’s overall tone does not change. At the same time, this may be a great opportunity to head to the paint store for some inspiration to further enhance our dining room’s theme.

By switching up my paint colors and choosing the right finish, I may be able to elevate our dining room to an even more modern vintage feel.

Finding The Right Paint Finish

Picking out the right paint colors for your home is not the only important decision you’ll make.  You’ll also need to decide on the best paint finish for each of your rooms. There are different types of paint finishes that you can choose from and the type of finish you choose can either work with your room’s theme or against it.

The Importance Of Lighting

Before you decide on the right finish, you’ll want to try out different colors in the space you intend to paint.  Keep in mind that the amount of light a room gets can make the paint color look completely different.

Natural light versus artificial light shows different undertones in the paint which can change the appearance of the paint altogether.  A great way to understand how lighting can affect your painted surface is to test out your paint color and finish on the wall in the space you intend to paint.  Leave your paint sample up for a few days to see how different lighting can affect the color and tone of the room.

As a general reminder, a paint’s finish is simply the amount of light that the paint reflects. In other words, your paint’s sheen is the amount of shine in your paint.  So while you may have the same paint colors, if the finishes are different, you could have two completely different looking paint colors.

Likewise, the same finish can look different based on the paint’s brand. For example, a bright white in a high gloss paint will have more light being reflected and therefore look brighter than the same bright white in an eggshell sheen.

Look At The Whole Room

For the best results, you’ll also want to look at your space as a whole.  Look at the color of your curtains, rugs, pillows, and other textiles.  How does the new color interact with the existing colors with the rest of your home? If you have an open floor plan, this may require you to be a bit more intentional with picking a color that complements the other colors displayed in your home.

Enhance Your Theme

If you have a darker dining room, you may want to incorporate a paint color and finish that will bring in light to your dining room.  As an alternative, you could pick a color and finish that adds drama to the darkness and creates a feeling of deep glam. Your paint color and finish should complement your dining room and enhance your room’s natural theme.

Pay Attention To Surface Textures

The wall finish you ultimately pick can also be greatly impacted by different surfaces.  If you have smoother walls, you won’t have to worry about this too much.  However, as an owner of a historic home, I can tell you that plaster walls will make paint look completely different.

If you compared the same paint and paint finish on a smooth surface versus a plaster wall with surface imperfections, you would be shocked to see the differences.  Walls with surface imperfections will require a paint finish that will work with the surface and not against it.

You don’t want a paint color and finish that draws attention to these imperfections.  Instead, opt for a finish that will help hide any damage.  A good choice to hide those imperfections is to look for a paint finish that has less reflective properties.  Flat finishes, matte finishes, or eggshell sheens are better suited for hiding those imperfections.

Durability Is Key

If you have kids then you’ve probably walked past your walls and discovered tiny fingerprints. There is nothing worse than wiping off smears from your walls ten times a day.  Did you know there is a reason that those tiny fingerprints are visible? It is due to your paint finish.

If you don’t want every fingerprint or little scuff to show, you’ll want to pick a paint finish that minimizes those imperfections.  This is especially important in high-traffic areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and family rooms.   Paints with flatter sheens can hide imperfections, but on the flip side, they are much harder to clean and can require touch up painting.

While your paint finish impacts the amount of light that is reflected, it also can impact your paint’s durability. Glossier finishes are harder and therefore more durable.  More light is reflected, so while imperfections can be seen more easily, these finishes have high durability and can be easily cleaned of any scuffs or marks.

Matter finishes, on the other hand, are a popular choice to hide wall imperfections, but will easily show scuffs and wear and tear.  If you try to clean a flat sheen, you will likely see those scrub marks.

Best Paint Finish for Dining Room -Types of Paint Finishes

There are several different paint finishes that you can choose from in interior paint.  Each of these sheens are on a scale ranging  from no sheen to subtle sheen to highest sheen. All of the finishes have positives and negatives, but what you ultimately pick is your own personal preference on what you find attractive and important for your own living space.

This neutral dining room is modern minimal perfection.

As mentioned previously, different finishes can affect the appearance of your paint by adding texture, depth, and undertones.  You want to work with your space’s theme and pick a finish that will enhance your dining room without drawing attention to imperfections.

You’ll want to keep in mind how heavily used the space you are painting is as high traffic areas will require a finish that is much more durable and easily cleaned.

Here is a quick breakdown of the different paint finishes to help you decide.

This dining room’s color scheme pairs nicely with an open floor plan.

Flat Paint Finish

A flat sheen has no reflective properties and will not reflect any light at all on the paint.  In other words, you won’t see any shine.  This can be beneficial if you need a paint that can hide a lot of imperfections.

Since no light is being reflected, you are seeing the full pigmentation of the paint.  Flat paints are a great choice for ceilings and low-traffic areas.  As a general rule, paints that have less shine, tend to also be less durable.  In other words, if you need to clean the wall due to a scuff or a fingerprint, you’ll likely see a mark left behind.

You may even notice a layer of paint that comes off the wall when you attempt to clean the mark.  For this reason, I prefer to keep flat finishes reserved for ceilings.  Knowing that I have small kids in my house, this is not a finish that I find very practical.

Matte Paint Finish

A matte finish is essentially the same as a flat paint finish, with the exception that it has a bit more durability.  If you want to have a paint that hides imperfections and has that deep pigmentation, then a matte finish is a good choice.  This finish is more forgiving when it comes to high-traffic spaces and can handle being scrubbed for clean ups.

I think that a matte paint finish can give an almost velvety texture to a space and can really give a dramatic appearance.  This would be a great choice for a theater room, office, or even dining room that has a more moody feel.

This is a great example of a moody dining room with a matte finish.

Eggshell Paint Finish

Eggshell finishes are a step up above matte finishes.  There is a considerable amount more of durability than a flat or matte finish, while still having little to no shine.  Again, you can get away with hiding imperfections, while still being able to clean the walls free from any scuffs or stains.  This is a better choice for spaces that see a lot of traffic like hallways, bedrooms, family rooms, and dining rooms.

Satin Paint Finish

Satin finishes are similar to eggshell finishes.  However, satin paint has a slight gloss.  With the reflective properties, this slight sheen can accentuate certain features, which can be useful in trim work, doors, and windows.

There is a stronger durability in a satin finish than an eggshell finish and it can be cleaned easily without fear of needing future touch ups.  Besides, who likes painting baseboards anyways?

Here is another moody dining room.

Semi-Gloss Finish

Semi-gloss paint has more reflective properties that highlight the light in a given space.  It is also much more durable than a flat or matte paint and can be easily wiped clean.  This paint finish is commonly seen in kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Check out my adventure in painting cabinets if you are interested in learning how to paint your own cabinets.

While it is extremely durable, keep in mind that because of the amount of light that is reflected, you will see imperfections much more easily.  If you are going to paint your own cabinets, I highly recommend you take the time to properly prepare your cabinets to help hide any flaws.

High-Gloss Finish

Glossy paint has a shiny look due to the amount of light reflected.  You will commonly see high-gloss paints used in furniture restoration. It is extremely durable and can withstand wear and tear which makes it the perfect paint for furniture.

On the other hand, it does not hide imperfections well at all.  Because of this, you need to have a skilled hand at applying these glossier finishes for an even sheen. This is not necessarily the best choice to use to paint your walls.  It will certainly give you a glam feel with lots of light (almost mirror-like), but keep in mind that the downside of this finish is that it will draw attention to any imperfections.

I’d highly recommend hiring a professional painter and using a high-quality paint if you choose to use a higher sheen paint for an entire room.  You may see some people create an accent wall or highlight a ceiling with a high gloss paint for a dramatic effect. While it can certainly bring a dramatic feel to your space, I’m more inclined to reserve this finish for my furniture pieces.

This bold high gloss paint color makes a statement in this dining room.

I hope this post gave you some good insight into what you should consider before painting your dining room or any room really.  Keep in mind that flatter finishes may hide wall imperfections, but you’ll be spending more time on upkeep as it will require touch ups for any wear and tear.  Glossier finishes will be extremely durable, but will draw attention to any imperfections that may be visible on your walls.

The right paint sheen is key for completing your room’s desired look and being practical for your home. If you have small kids, I’d highly recommend choosing a sheen that is more durable than a flat or matte finish.  Instead, opt for a satin or eggshell sheen, which can give you a great middle ground between durability and pigmentation.
